Taxonomy & naming
Labidochromis sp. "Textilis Cobalt" has never been formally described: it has no authority, no year of publication, and no FishBase entry. As with its identity resting on collection locality and colour rather than a published diagnosis, no authority, year, or FishBase entry should ever be attached to it. The “textilis” tag references Labidochromis textilis (Oliver, 1975), whose confirmed range runs north to Undu Reef in Tanzania — the IUCN assessment for that species explicitly excludes Likoma and Chizumulu islands from its range, underlining how narrowly distributed textilis-like Labidochromis populations tend to be. Notably, the locality recorded for “Textilis Cobalt,” Lumessi, is the same reef already documented in the atlas for Labidochromis sp. "Textilis Blue," implying that collectors distinguish at least two separate cobalt- and blue-toned colour forms from that single site. The two should not be assumed identical; each is treated here as its own undescribed population pending a taxonomic review.
Morphology
Labidochromis textilis and its informally related “textilis” trade forms are deep-water, elongate-bodied members of the genus with a generally blue overall tone. “Cobalt” in this population’s trade name implies a deeper, more saturated blue than the “Textilis Blue” form recorded from the same reef, but no formal description or detailed colour account has been published to confirm the distinction, and no measurements specific to this population exist. It is presented here as a genus-typical, textilis-group Labidochromis pending a proper field account.
Habitat
The only locality on record for “Textilis Cobalt” is Lumessi, on Lake Malawi’s Mozambican shore. The “textilis” group of Labidochromis is generally reported from somewhat deeper rocky water than many shallower-reef congeners. No depth or micro-habitat record specific to this population has been published, so the ranges given here reflect that deeper, textilis-typical rocky-reef envelope. Water conditions follow Lake Malawi’s standard inshore rocky-habitat profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Depth in particular tends to correlate with predation pressure and light penetration in Lake Malawi's rocky habitats, both of which shape which Labidochromis ecotype — grazer or picker — dominates a given rock face, though no site-specific study exists for this population.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study exists for “Textilis Cobalt.” Rock-dwelling Labidochromis in general either rasp aufwuchs from submerged stone or work fine gaps between rocks for small crustaceans and insect larvae. Until a specific feeding account is published, it is presented here as a genus-typical rock-associated micro-invertivore or aufwuchs grazer in the textilis mould. Deeper-water Labidochromis of the textilis group are generally assumed to rely more on invertebrate picking than the shallow-reef algae specialists of the genus, since aufwuchs growth thins with depth and light, though this is an inference from habitat rather than a confirmed diet study for this form.
Mating
No dedicated study of courtship or territoriality exists for this population. Rock-dwelling Labidochromis generally follow the wider Lake Malawi cichlid pattern: males hold and defend small territories among boulders or crevices, with no lasting pair bond, and females move between territories to select a mate. Whether “Textilis Cobalt” follows that pattern in detail has not been documented. Territories at the depths typical of the textilis group are thought to be more loosely spaced than the crowded leks of shallow-reef mbuna, simply because there is less competition for rock face at that depth, but no courtship observation specific to this population exists.
Breeding
As with every Lake Malawi cichlid, “Textilis Cobalt” is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder: a female takes fertilised eggs into her mouth and incubates them for several weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further parental role from the male. No clutch size or brood duration specific to this form has been published; genus-typical Labidochromis broods run to a few dozen eggs. Across the genus generally, brooding runs roughly three to four weeks before fry are released able to feed independently, with clutch size loosely scaling with female body size.
In the aquarium
“Textilis Cobalt” is a rarely traded, specialist form rather than a mainstream aquarium fish. A keeper who obtained it should provide a standard rocky-reef Lake Malawi setup: substantial rockwork with caves and crevices, fine sand substrate, and hard, alkaline water in the range of roughly 75–82 °F and pH 7.7–8.6. Given the genus’s mixed feeding strategies, a varied diet offering both plant-based flake and small meaty foods is a sensible default. No species-specific husbandry record for this form exists. Strong water movement and high dissolved oxygen — achieved with vigorous filtration or a powerhead — are worth prioritising given the moderate-to-deep water this genus favours in the wild, and, as with most mbuna, males can be intolerant of similarly patterned tankmates in a small aquarium.
Conservation
“Textilis Cobalt” has no IUCN Red List assessment, because formal evaluation requires a validly published scientific name, and none exists for this form. As a rock-associated cichlid recorded from a single locality on the Mozambican shore, alongside at least one other named colour form from the same reef, it shares the general exposures documented across Lake Malawi’s rocky-habitat endemics — localised habitat pressure and the ornamental collecting that targets narrow-range Labidochromis forms — but no population-specific data exist to characterise its status with any more precision than that. More broadly, Lake Malawi's rocky-shore cichlid communities face cumulative pressure from shoreline deforestation and the resulting sedimentation, plus steady demand from the aquarium trade for newly named, narrow-range forms exactly like this one — pressures well documented for the lake as a whole even where no population-specific study exists.
