Taxonomy & naming
Labidochromis sp. "Likomae" has never been formally described: it has no authority, no year of publication, and no FishBase entry. Its trade name is consistent with “Likoma,” the island group in the lake’s eastern basin that includes Likoma Island, Chizumulu Island, and Maingano Island — the single locality on record for this form. Maingano Island already carries a documented locality population of the described Labidochromis freibergi in the atlas, so “Likomae” is not the only Labidochromis known from that island; it should not be assumed identical to L. freibergi or to any other named form recorded there. Note also that “Maingano” is the long-standing trade name of an unrelated Lake Malawi mbuna, Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos, which happens to share the same type locality; the two names and the two genera are not connected, and “Likomae” should not be confused with that species.
Morphology
Labidochromis is united more by jaw structure than by a single body plan: its outer teeth are closely packed and forceps-like, used variously for rasping aufwuchs from rock or picking small invertebrates from crevices, and species range from robust, short-jawed grazers to slender, elongate pickers. No description of “Likomae” has been published to place it on that spectrum, and no measurements or colour account specific to this form are available. Rather than guess at a pattern, it is presented here as a genus-typical Labidochromis of moderate size pending a proper field account.
Habitat
Labidochromis sp. “Likomae” is recorded from Maingano Island, part of the rocky Likoma archipelago that rises from open water in the lake’s eastern basin — a classic island-rock habitat quite different from the mainland shore, isolated by depth and distance and known for a distinctive suite of endemic cichlids. Labidochromis as a genus is broadly a rock-dweller, occupying crevices, boulder piles, and cave systems across a wide depth range depending on species. No depth or micro-habitat data specific to this form have been published, so the ranges given here reflect the genus-typical rocky-reef envelope. Water conditions follow Lake Malawi’s standard inshore rocky-habitat profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline.
Feeding
Because Labidochromis spans both algae-grazing and invertebrate-picking feeding modes depending on species, and no dedicated study exists for “Likomae,” its exact diet cannot be stated with confidence. Rock-dwelling Labidochromis in general either rasp aufwuchs from submerged stone or work fine gaps between rocks for small crustaceans and insect larvae, and several species do both opportunistically. Until a specific feeding account is published, it is presented here as a genus-typical rock-associated micro-invertivore or aufwuchs grazer. The relative balance between grazing and picking in this population cannot be inferred from its trade name alone, unlike the genus's gigas- or lividus-affiliated forms, and would require a dedicated field study to resolve.
Mating
No dedicated study of courtship or territoriality exists for Labidochromis sp. “Likomae.” Rock-dwelling Labidochromis generally follow the wider Lake Malawi cichlid pattern: males hold and defend small territories among boulders or crevices, with no lasting pair bond, and females move between territories to select a mate. Whether this form’s males hold open rock or a crevice site has not been documented. As in most rock-dwelling Labidochromis, courtship is expected to involve a quivering display from a territorial male directed at a visiting female, but no such observation has been recorded for this specific population.
Breeding
As with every Lake Malawi cichlid, Labidochromis sp. “Likomae” is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder: a female takes fertilised eggs into her mouth and incubates them for several weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further parental role from the male. No clutch size, brood duration, or other reproductive detail specific to this form has been published; genus-typical Labidochromis broods run to a few dozen eggs. Across the genus generally, brooding runs roughly three to four weeks before fry are released able to feed independently, with clutch size loosely scaling with female body size.
In the aquarium
Labidochromis sp. “Likomae” is a rarely traded, island-specific form rather than a mainstream aquarium fish. A keeper who obtained it should provide a standard rocky-reef Lake Malawi setup: substantial rockwork with caves and crevices, fine sand substrate, and hard, alkaline water in the range of roughly 75–82 °F and pH 7.7–8.6. Given the genus’s mixed feeding strategies, a varied diet offering both plant-based flake and small meaty foods is a sensible default. No species-specific husbandry record for “Likomae” exists. Strong water movement and high dissolved oxygen — achieved with vigorous filtration or a powerhead — are worth prioritising given the moderate-to-deep water this genus favours in the wild, and, as with most mbuna, males can be intolerant of similarly patterned tankmates in a small aquarium.
Conservation
Labidochromis sp. “Likomae” has no IUCN Red List assessment, because formal evaluation requires a validly published scientific name, and none exists for this form. As a rock-associated cichlid apparently confined to a single small island in the Likoma archipelago, it shares the general exposures documented across Lake Malawi’s island-endemic cichlids — a naturally restricted range combined with the ornamental collecting pressure such island populations often attract — but no population-specific data exist to characterise its status with any more precision than that. More broadly, Lake Malawi's rocky-shore cichlid communities face cumulative pressure from shoreline deforestation and the resulting sedimentation, plus steady demand from the aquarium trade for newly named, narrow-range forms exactly like this one — pressures well documented for the lake as a whole even where no population-specific study exists.
