Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Lethrinops macrochir is a sand-dwelling haplochromine cichlid endemic to Lake Malawi, part of the large genus Charles Tate Regan carved out of the lake's cichlid fauna in his 1922 monograph The Cichlid Fishes of Lake Nyassa. Like its many relatives it works open sandy shelves for buried invertebrates, dropping protrusible jaws into the substrate and sifting mouthfuls of sand for prey too small and well hidden for a rock-grazing mbuna to find. Taxonomy & naming

Lethrinops macrochir belongs to Lethrinops, a large genus of sand-dwelling Lake Malawi haplochromines that Charles Tate Regan erected in his 1922 monograph on the cichlid fishes of Lake Nyasa, designating Chromis lethrinus Günther, 1894 as the type species. The genus is one of the taxonomically trickiest in the lake — the boundaries between Lethrinops, Tramitichromis and Taeniolethrinops are subtle and have been revised more than once, most substantially in Benjamin Ngatunga's 2000 doctoral study of the shallow-water members of these three genera. The species epithet macrochir combines the Greek makros (large) and cheir (hand), a construction fish taxonomists have historically used to flag an unusually large fin — most plausibly the pectoral — rather than any literal hand-like structure. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the precise describing author, year and original citation for this species; those details are not asserted with confidence here.

Morphology

Lethrinops macrochir has the classic sand-sifting build shared across its genus: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed body, a relatively pointed head, and protrusible jaws suited to probing loose substrate. Its epithet points to an unusually large fin — most plausibly enlarged pectoral fins relative to related species — a detail that would have helped early taxonomists distinguish it from otherwise similar-looking Lethrinops on the same sandy shelves. Outside breeding condition, Lethrinops species are typically silvery and plainly coloured, with non-breeding males differing only subtly from females; breeding males across the genus commonly flush blue-green or yellow tones as nuptial colour intensifies, a transformation that likely applies here as well, though this species' specific colour pattern is not confidently documented in the accessible literature.

Habitat

Lethrinops macrochir is endemic to Lake Malawi and has been documented from Boadzulu Island, Lumessi and Senga Bay, a spread across the central lake consistent with a sand-dwelling species occupying open, gently sloping shelves. Like the rest of its genus it is expected to favour extensive sandy bottoms, often at moderate depth and sometimes near scattered rocks that break up an otherwise unbroken sand floor, rather than the solid rock faces preferred by mbuna. The surrounding water is the typical hard, alkaline Lake Malawi column: warm tropical temperatures through the mid-20s Celsius and a pH comfortably on the alkaline side of neutral, the chemical envelope every sand-dwelling Lethrinops depends on.

Feeding

Lethrinops macrochir is a benthic, sand-sifting invertivore in the manner typical of its genus — a carnivore that mines the substrate rather than grazing rock or hunting in open water. Ad Konings, describing the related genus Tramitichromis (Cichlids Yearbook, Vol. 2), specifically names L. macrochir alongside L. leptodon as examples of 'other sand-sifting Lethrinops' that share the same gill-raker architecture: short, robust lower gill rakers whose first two elements are reduced to small knobs, while the central three to five are wide and enlarged, their tips forming an almost horizontal platform at the bottom of the mouth. When a mouthful of sand and sediment is taken in, this platform acts as a grid — heavier sand grains sink between the rakers and are carried back out through the gill openings, while lighter material, including invertebrates and algae, is retained inside the mouth. This is the actual mechanism behind the genus-typical description of fish 'dropping the mouth to the sand and sorting the edible fraction across the gill rakers.' This behaviour is often social, with sand-dwelling Lethrinops frequently observed feeding in loose groups across open shelves. Beyond this raker architecture, no dedicated dietary study (gut-content analysis, prey-item identification) has been published for L. macrochir specifically, so the rest of this account draws on the well-established feeding ecology of the genus as a whole.

Mating

Like the great majority of Lake Malawi haplochromines, Lethrinops macrochir is presumed to be a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder whose courtship plays out in lek-like fashion on the open sand. A breeding male in related, well-studied Lethrinops establishes and defends a spawning site on the bottom, in some species marking it with a small heap of pushed-up sand — the genus's version of the elaborate sand bowers built by several sand-dwelling Malawi cichlids — and displays his nuptial colours to females passing through the area. Several Lethrinops species show notably low intraspecific aggression, allowing multiple males to hold colour and court simultaneously nearby rather than one dominant male suppressing the rest, a pattern this species likely shares though it has not been documented specifically for it.

Breeding

Reproduction in Lethrinops macrochir is presumed to follow the maternal-mouthbrooding pattern universal to the lake's haplochromine flock. After courtship on the male's sand territory, the female is expected to take the fertilised eggs into her mouth, where they are incubated and the larvae sheltered, while the male provides no parental care beyond defending the spawning site during courtship. Sand-dwelling Lethrinops are generally comparatively modest brooders, with congeners typically carrying on the order of a few dozen eggs and fry rather than the hundreds laid by open-substrate spawners — the trade-off for the protection mouthbrooding confers. Specific clutch counts for L. macrochir have not been documented, so this figure is a genus-level estimate rather than a measured value.

In the aquarium

Lethrinops macrochir is not a common fish in the hobby; sand-dwelling Lethrinops generally circulate through specialist African cichlid importers and breeders rather than general fish shops, and this species is best regarded as a project fish for the committed Malawi enthusiast. Where kept, the single most important requirement is a deep bed of fine sand — at least 3–4 in covering the tank's full footprint — since this is a sand-sifter that survives by driving its jaws into soft sediment; coarse gravel or a thin sand layer prevents normal feeding behaviour and causes chronic stress. Water should match the lake's chemistry, roughly 75–82 °F with pH 7.7–8.6 and hard, alkaline conditions, and the fish should be offered sinking foods such as frozen bloodworm, Mysis shrimp or Daphnia alongside a quality cichlid pellet. Suitable tankmates are other peaceful sand- or intermediate-habitat Malawi cichlids of similar size rather than boisterous mbuna.

Conservation

Lethrinops macrochir has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List in any record confidently known here, and no status should be assumed for it. As a sand-dwelling species of the kind targeted by beach-seine fishing along Malawi's shallow, sandy shorelines, it likely faces a degree of localised fishing pressure typical of the genus, though this has not been documented specifically for this species. It shares the broader pressures affecting Lake Malawi's sandy and intermediate habitats: sedimentation and nutrient loading from catchment deforestation and agriculture, artisanal fishing pressure across the food web, and a warming, increasingly stratified surface layer that is reshaping the lake's productivity. Its precise range, abundance and conservation status remain to be formally established.
