Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Lethrinops mylodon belongs to the genus Lethrinops, erected by Charles Tate Regan in his 1922 revision of the cichlid fishes of Lake Nyasa. The genus name refers to a resemblance Regan saw between its type species and the marine emperor breams of genus Lethrinus. Lethrinops today comprises roughly two dozen formally described species, most named by Regan or by Ethelwynn Trewavas in her thorough 1931 synopsis of the lake's cichlid fauna, alongside a considerable number of undescribed forms. The precise original description and year for Lethrinops mylodon specifically have not been confirmed against a primary source for this article, so no formal describing authority is asserted here. The epithet mylodon combines the Greek roots mylo- ("grinder" or "mill") and odon ("tooth"), pointing directly to enlarged, molar-like grinding teeth in the pharynx — the structure this species is presumably named for.

Morphology

The defining feature implied by this species' name is its dentition: molariform, grinding pharyngeal teeth, a specialisation found scattered across Lethrinops and other Malawi sand-cichlids that lets a fish crush harder-shelled prey — small molluscs, ostracods, or other armoured invertebrates — that finer-toothed relatives cannot process. Habitat

Lethrinops mylodon is documented from Nkhata Bay, a well-known site on Lake Malawi's western shore, and from the South East Arm, a broad southern basin far to the south — a spread that, along with the harder-prey dentition its name implies, is consistent with a species associated with the deeper, softer-substrate zones several Lethrinops species specialise in rather than the shallow, wave-washed sand shelf. Lethrinops as a genus range from shallow sandy beaches down into deep, muddy offshore bottoms, and mylodon's grinding teeth would suit prey more typical of those deeper, softer sediments. The surrounding water carries the lake's characteristic warm, hard, strongly alkaline chemistry near the surface, cooling with depth.

Feeding

Lethrinops mylodon is presumed to be a benthic invertivore whose molariform pharyngeal teeth allow it to crush and process harder-bodied prey than the soft invertebrates most sand-sifting Lethrinops rely on — plausibly small molluscs, ostracods, or other shelled organisms living in or on the substrate. As in other Lethrinops, feeding is expected to follow the genus's characteristic method: taking a mouthful of sediment, sorting the edible fraction across the gill rakers, and expelling clean sand through the gill openings, with the crushing work done afterward by the specialised pharyngeal teeth. Lethrinops mylodon is not an established aquarium fish, and no dedicated keeping literature exists for it. Any husbandry notes here follow the general Lethrinops template: a large tank with a deep bed of fine sand across the full footprint to allow natural sifting behaviour, generous open swimming space, and only modest rockwork. Water should replicate the lake — warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, kept stable with strong filtration, since chemical instability is closely linked to the digestive illness hobbyists call Malawi bloat. Given the crushing dentition implied by its name, a diet including harder-bodied invertebrate foods alongside the usual sinking frozen fare might suit it better than most sand-dwelling relatives, though this is inference rather than documented experience. Suitable tankmates would be other peaceful, similarly sized Malawi cichlids rather than aggressive mbuna.

Conservation

No IUCN Red List assessment specific to Lethrinops mylodon is confirmed here, so no status is asserted. As a species documented from sites at opposite ends of the lake, it may hold a wider distribution than many narrow-range Malawi endemics, though this remains unconfirmed.
