The genus name refers to a resemblance Regan saw between its type species and the marine emperor breams of genus Lethrinus. Lethrinops today comprises roughly two dozen formally described species, most named by Regan or by Ethelwynn Trewavas in her thorough 1931 synopsis of the lake's cichlid fauna, alongside a considerable number of undescribed forms. Water should replicate the lake — warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, kept stable with strong filtration, since chemical instability is closely linked to the digestive illness hobbyists call Malawi bloat. Given the crushing dentition implied by its name, a diet including harder-bodied invertebrate foods alongside the usual sinking frozen fare might suit it better than most sand-dwelling relatives, though this is inference rather than documented experience.
