Taxonomy & naming
Albert Günther described this fish in 1862 in the fourth volume of his Catalogue of the Fishes in the British Museum, not as a full species but as a variety: Crenicichla johanna var. strigata, on page 306. He drew it from material labelled to one of two Pará localities — the Rio Capim and the Rio Cupari (a Tapajós-basin tributary, given in the old notation as '800 miles from the sea'). The name floated for more than a century in the shadow of its near-identical relatives until the Dutch ichthyologist Alex Ploeg, in his 1991 thesis revising Crenicichla, examined Günther's syntypes, selected a lectotype (BMNH 1849.11.8.79-82, one of four), and treated strigata as a valid species in its own right. That status has been upheld by Kullander (1997, and in the 2003 Reis et al. checklist of South American freshwater fishes), by DoNascimiento and colleagues (2017), and by Taphorn et al. (2022). Within the genus it is the namesake and type of the 'strigata group' — a cluster of large, small-scaled, deep-bodied pikes (alongside lugubris, johanna, marmorata, percna and others) whose juveniles share a striking striped pattern. In 2023 Varella, Kullander, Menezes, Oliveira and López-Fernández published an integrative phylogenetic revision of pike-cichlid classification and split this assemblage off into a resurrected genus, Lugubria Varella et al. 2023 (named for its type species L. lugubris), so the Catalog of Fishes now lists the species as Lugubria strigata. We keep it under Crenicichla here, the name under which essentially the entire descriptive and hobby literature treats it, while flagging the newer combination. Some of the early confusion has practical roots: Beaufortia-era reviewers once sank strigata into synonymy with Crenicichla lugubris, and the fish sold in the European trade for years as 'Lugubria strigata' (a Venezuelan import) was later shown by Frank Warzel not to be conspecific with Günther's true Capim-drainage species at all.
A later analysis by Ploeg (1991) and Kullander grouped the strigata-type pikes by build rather than by pattern alone: a blunt-nosed, robustly proportioned cluster comprising C. lugubris, C. lenticulata, C. marmorata, C. johanna, C. cincta, and L. strigata itself, set apart from a more slender, pointed-snout cluster (C. multispinosa, C. ternetzi, C. tigrina, C. percna, C. phaiospilus) that shows some of the same striped juvenile pattern but a markedly different head profile. Kullander cautioned that the division holds cleanly in only a few cases — strigata, marmorata, and lugubris do share real similarities — a reminder that the striped juvenile pattern recurs repeatedly across Crenicichla and is not, by itself, proof of close kinship.
Morphology
This is a big pike cichlid. FishBase lists a maximum of 12 in standard length, and field and aquarium accounts put total length at or beyond 15.5 in; Warzel, writing in the first Cichlids Yearbook, placed it among the minority of Crenicichla that 'normally grow over 12 in,' as opposed to the many congeners that rarely pass 10 in. The body is the elongate, cylindrical, large-mouthed form typical of the genus — a built-for-ambush shape with a long head, a deeply cleft protrusible jaw, and the low-set dorsal fin of a fish that lies in wait among roots and rock. The flanks carry the fine ('small') scalation that diagnoses the strigata group. Coloration is strongly age-dependent and is the source of the name: juveniles bear a sharp, dark horizontal stripe running the length of the body to a black caudal-peduncle spot, accompanied by an attractive pattern of black spots on the head. ETYFish records the diagnostic detail behind strigata ('striped') — a pair of brown streaks along the middle of the body to the caudal spot, the upper one continuing forward through the eye to the snout, plus a third streak along the upper lateral line. At around 6 in (roughly six inches) the fish metamorphoses into adult dress: the juvenile stripe breaks up, and adults show a greener ground colour with bars and a conspicuous, often light-edged blotch on the caudal peduncle. Sexual dimorphism is subtle, as in most pikes — the prolonged unpaired fins seen in some Crenicichla are absent here. The most reliable sign is in the dorsal fin: mature females develop a distinct light (white) submarginal band beneath the dark or red marginal stripe, a marking males lack; ripe females also redden or pinken on the belly.
Habitat
Lugubria strigata is a fish of the Amazon River basin. The Catalog of Fishes gives its distribution as the Amazon drainage of Brazil, Colombia and Guyana; FishBase frames it more narrowly as the southern tributaries of the Amazon in Brazil and Guyana, and explicitly notes that it is not taken from the main river channel itself. Its type localities — the Rio Capim, which drains to the Pará estuary, and the Rio Cupari in the Tapajós system — sit within that southern-tributary picture. It is a benthopelagic, freshwater species that, like its relatives, lives close to structure: submerged wood, leaf litter, root tangles and rocky cover along the margins and bottom of lowland rivers and their tributary creeks (igarapés). Documented in-situ water chemistry for this exact species is thin, but the general envelope is the warm, soft, slightly acidic to near-neutral water of the lower Amazon: FishBase records a pH range of about 6.5–7.5, hardness up to roughly 20 dH, and a tropical temperature band of about 73–81 °F, and hobby sources extend the workable range to pH 6.0–7.0. As a large, structure-oriented ambush predator it occupies the lurking, cover-dependent niche that pike cichlids fill throughout the Neotropics — secretive by day, darting from a lair to seize passing prey.
Feeding
Pike cichlids are, as their common name advertises, the Neotropical analogues of the northern pike — lunging, gape-and-suck ambush predators with long snouts and large, tooth-studded protrusible mouths that let them grab and swallow prey whole. Among Crenicichla the large, small-scaled forms such as strigata are the most thoroughly piscivorous: gut analyses of pike cichlids (Knöppel 1970) record insects, insect larvae and shrimp across the genus, with fish featuring heavily in the diet of the bigger species. FishBase estimates a trophic level near 3.8 for strigata, consistent with a predator that takes mostly other fishes plus large invertebrates. Behaviourally it is a secretive, lunging ambusher rather than an active courser: observers describe large pikes darting out from a crevice or root mass to snatch unwary passers-by and retreating to cover rather than pursuing — a hunting style that shapes everything from its preferred habitat to its captive feeding quirks (wild-caught adults sometimes fail to recognise unfamiliar feeder fish as food at all). In the community it is a top-end predator of the leaf-litter and woody-debris zones, cropping smaller fishes from the cover it shares with them.
Mating
Like most large cichlids, Lugubria strigata is monogamous and forms pairs, and like most pikes it is decidedly antisocial toward its own kind outside the bond. Warzel's observations of these large striped pikes describe a telling ontogenetic shift in temperament: striped juveniles are peaceful and actively gregarious, seeking each other's company and even banding together to chase intruders from a shared territory — behaviour he read as a captive echo of the long parental brood-guarding (six months or more) seen in the wild. With the colour change at maturity comes a sharp change in disposition: skirmishes break out among former groupmates, and the population shakes down to dominant pairs. Pair formation in confinement is fraught; matched pikes can bond strongly, but mismatched or crowded fish turn lethal, and even an established pair may quarrel in the restricted quarters of a tank. Sexing for pairing is awkward because the fish lack the elongate fin filaments that flag the sexes in some congeners — the practical cue is the female's light dorsal-fin band and her reddening belly. Courtship and the presence of females carrying ripe eggs have been seen repeatedly in aquaria, but the behaviour has rarely been carried through to a successful wild-type spawn.
Breeding
Lugubria strigata is a biparental cave spawner. FishBase, correcting an earlier account, describes the genus-typical pattern for this species: the eggs are deposited inside a cave — on the ceiling, sometimes on the walls — where the female tends the clutch while the male defends the surrounding territory; once the fry are free-swimming, both parents share their care. Documented fecundity for the species is modest by cichlid standards, on the order of a few hundred eggs (FishBase models cite roughly 300–600), in keeping with substrate spawners that invest heavily in guarding rather than in egg number. Parental devotion is prolonged: in the wild the adults are thought to guard their young for six months or more, which dovetails with the long gregarious, contact-seeking phase of the striped juveniles. Captive breeding of the large strigata-group pikes has been a notorious sticking point — courtship and ripe females are seen, but as Warzel lamented, a successful spawning of one of these big species had not been achieved, the missing piece presumed to be environmental triggers (the seasonal cues of the wild flood cycle) that an aquarium reproduces only partially. Seriously Fish likewise reports no confirmed hobby spawnings. Where related small-scaled pikes have been bred, the fry are relatively large at hatching, take newly hatched brine shrimp at once, and grow quickly.
In the aquarium
Lugubria strigata is one of the more frequently traded pike cichlids — and one of the most frequently mis-sold, because attractive striped juveniles are bought by keepers who do not realise the fish will pass 12 in and turn predatory. This is a large-fish project. Seriously Fish recommends a tank on the order of 180 × 23.5 in (about 1,0.5 US gal) for an adult, and that is a sensible floor rather than a luxury; the species needs both physical room and visual breaks to manage its temper. A sand substrate is preferred, since these pikes dig and rearrange the decor to suit themselves, and the single most important furnishing is secure cover — rockwork caves, bogwood tangles, or sections of wide PVC pipe sized to the fish, into which a pike can retreat. Hobbyists who keep groups of large pikes lean on plentiful PVC lairs precisely to defuse aggression. Plants, if used, should be robust and potted or anchored to wood, as loose specimens will be uprooted.
Water should be warm and on the soft, slightly acidic-to-neutral side: roughly 73–81 °F, pH about 6.0–7.0 (the species tolerates up to around 7.5 and hardness to ~20 dH), with strong, mature biological filtration. Pike cichlids are heavy feeders and heavy waste producers, and they are notably sensitive to accumulated nitrogenous waste; large, regular water changes (25–50% weekly is the standard advice) and generous filtration are not optional, and the species is reported to be prone to head-and-lateral-line erosion ('hole-in-the-head') when maintenance lapses. Diet should be varied and substantial — quality cichlid pellets, frozen and live foods such as bloodworm and shrimp, and meaty items like prawn and mussel; long-term reliance on live feeder fish is unnecessary and risks introducing disease, and wild adults often need weaning onto non-living foods.
Compatibility is the hard part. Lugubria strigata can be aggressive, especially toward conspecifics, and it will eat any tankmate small enough to fit its considerable mouth. It is best kept either as a single specimen, as a carefully matched pair in a large tank, or with other robust, similarly sized cichlids and fish too big to swallow; mixing several pikes works only in very large quarters with abundant cover and fish of equal size, and even then the group tends to shake down to a dominant pair. This is a fish for an experienced keeper with the space to house a predator of forty centimetres for its full life.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Lugubria strigata as Least Concern. The assessment was carried out on 7 November 2018 by the Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação da Biodiversidade (ICMBio) and published in 2022. The species carries no CITES listing and is of no commercial fisheries interest; FishBase rates it harmless to humans and of low-to-moderate fishing vulnerability. Its security rests on a wide distribution across the Amazon basin in Brazil, Colombia and Guyana rather than on any narrow stronghold, which insulates it from the localized threats that imperil range-restricted Amazonian cichlids. It is collected for the ornamental aquarium trade, but at a level the assessment does not flag as a population concern. As with all widespread Amazon fishes, the broader backdrop is the accelerating pressure on the basin's freshwaters — damming of tributaries, deforestation, mining and its mercury legacy, and altered flood-pulse regimes — none of which is documented as a present danger to this particular pike, but which frame the long-term outlook for the rivers it depends on.
