Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Morphology

The defining feature signalled by the trade name is a pronounced, torpedo-like elongation of the body — longer and more streamlined than the genus's typical fusiform build, with a correspondingly reduced body depth. This shape is associated in several elongate Mylochromis species with a more predatory or fast-water foraging lifestyle than the deep-bodied sand-sifters. No published measurements specific to this Senga Bay population exist; a length in the upper range for the genus, plausibly 7–8.5 in TL, is a reasonable estimate for an elongate-bodied Mylochromis rather than a measured figure. Habitat

The only recorded locality for this form is Senga Bay, a well-known bay on Lake Malawi's central-western shore that combines sandy beaches, scattered rocky points, and deeper drop-off habitat. Elongate, torpedo-shaped Mylochromis species are typically associated with open water adjacent to structure or with the transitional zone along drop-offs, where a streamlined body aids rapid pursuit of prey, rather than the tight rock crevices favoured by mbuna. Water at Senga Bay follows the lake's typical warm, hard, alkaline profile.

Feeding

Elongate-bodied Mylochromis species are generally associated with a more active, pursuit-based feeding style than the genus's deep-bodied sand-sifters and shell-crushers, in some cases including a piscivorous or partially piscivorous diet of small fish taken by ambush or short pursuit. This form is presumed to lean toward that end of the genus's dietary spectrum given its body shape, though no dedicated dietary study exists to confirm the degree of piscivory for the Senga Bay population specifically, and a generalist invertivore component to the diet should also be assumed absent direct evidence.

Mating

No dedicated courtship study exists for this form. Genus-typical expectations apply: a polygynous mating system with no pair bond, males holding loosely defended territories and displaying to passing females. A keeper who obtains it should provide a long tank — elongate, active Mylochromis species generally need more swimming room than deep-bodied haps of similar length — of at least 59 in, a sand substrate, and water matched to Lake Malawi's chemistry: roughly 75–82 °F, pH 7.7 to 8.6, moderately hard to hard. If the fish leans toward a more piscivorous diet as its body shape suggests, small tankmates should be avoided, and a varied diet including appropriately sized whole prey items alongside standard cichlid foods is a sensible precaution, though none of this has been directly confirmed for the form.

Its status in the wild is unassessed; no population-specific data exist to characterise threats at Senga Bay beyond the general pressures — small-scale fishing, tourism development, and aquarium collection — that affect this popular and heavily used stretch of Lake Malawi's shoreline.
