Taxonomy & naming

Mylochromis mollis belongs to the genus Mylochromis, erected by Charles Tate Regan in 1920 for long-snouted Malawi sand-cichlids, with Mylochromis lateristriga as the type species. Like several of its congeners, the species may have passed through the genus Maravichromis — erected by Eccles and Trewavas in 1989 — before Derijst and Snoeks demonstrated in 1992 that Maravichromis was a junior synonym of the older Mylochromis, restoring the fish to its current genus. The precise original description and year for Mylochromis mollis specifically have not been confirmed against a primary source for this article, so no formal describing authority is asserted here. A varied diet built around quality cichlid pellets supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates would suit its presumed sediment-feeding biology. Realistically this is a fish for the dedicated Malawi specialist rather than a commonly available aquarium subject.
