Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Mylochromis sp. "Deep" is an undescribed haplochromine recorded at Maleri Island, in southern Lake Malawi. Its trade name marks it as a deep-water form, part of a pattern seen across several Mylochromis lineages in which populations occupy deeper sand and transition habitat than most of the lake's better-known rock-dwelling cichlids reach. It has not been formally described.

Morphology

Mylochromis sp. "Deep" is expected to share the moderately elongate, laterally compressed body plan typical of non-mbuna Malawi haplochromines in this genus. No published morphometric description, size record or colour account exists for this population specifically, and this account does not assign it a fixed pattern. Deep-water haplochromines in the lake are sometimes noted for reduced or muted colouration relative to shallow-water relatives, consistent with the lower light levels at depth, but this has not been documented for this population in particular.

Habitat

This form is documented from Maleri Island in southern Lake Malawi, from deeper water than typical rocky mbuna habitat, consistent with its trade name. Mylochromis as a genus includes species occupying the sand and sand-rock transition zone at a range of depths, and several lineages extend into deeper water than most rock-dwelling mbuna. Water chemistry follows the lake's standard envelope of hard, alkaline conditions, though light levels and temperature at greater depth are milder than in the shallows.

Feeding

No feeding study specific to this population has been published. Mylochromis as a genus is feeding-diverse: some species use molariform pharyngeal teeth to crush snails and other hard-shelled invertebrates, others pick softer invertebrates from sand or algae-covered rock, and a few are known to trail brooding females to steal eggs or fry. Without a species-specific study, no single mode can be confidently assigned to this population, and this account does not guess.

Mating

Mating behaviour has not been documented for this population specifically. Non-mbuna Malawi haplochromines in this genus typically breed on sand or at the sand-rock interface, with males establishing a display site that ripe females visit for courtship and spawning; deeper-water populations may use less light-dependent display cues than shallow-water relatives, though this has not been studied for this form.

Breeding

As in all Mylochromis and the wider Lake Malawi haplochromine radiation, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding. The female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth after spawning and carries them alone through development, releasing free-swimming fry after several weeks with no further parental care. Clutch size and brooding duration have not been recorded for this population.

In the aquarium

This form is not established in the general aquarium trade under this name, and no dedicated husbandry record exists for it. Were it kept, care would follow the general Mylochromis template: a large tank with a sand substrate and rockwork limited to the transition zone rather than dense caves, hard alkaline water matching the lake, and a varied diet suited to a likely invertebrate-leaning feeder. Given its deep-water origin, subdued lighting may better suit its natural conditions than the bright lighting typical of a shallow mbuna display tank.

Conservation

Mylochromis sp. "Deep" has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, and as an undescribed form it is not currently eligible for formal assessment. Its documented range is a single island, and no dedicated survey of collecting pressure or habitat condition there has been published, so its status is best described as unevaluated and effectively unknown.
