Mylochromis sp. "Mollis Gallireya" has no scientific description, no describing author or year, and does not appear in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes or FishBase. Its trade name follows the standard resemblance-plus-locality convention: "mollis" refers to Mylochromis mollis, a described species whose Latin epithet means "soft" or "gentle," likely describing some aspect of texture, colouration, or demeanour that has not been definitively confirmed even for the type species; "Gallireya" identifies this form's collection point at Gallireya Reef. Mollis-type Mylochromis are documented at more than one site across the lake, including Thumbi West Island and Chimwalani Reef, and this Gallireya Reef form is presented in the hobby as belonging to that same loose complex rather than as a fully independent identification. No authority or publication date should be attached to it.
Morphology
As a form allied to Mylochromis mollis, this fish is expected to share that species' general build: a moderately elongate, sand-associated haplochromine of the genus's long-snouted general plan, with M. mollis documented at roughly 6.5 in TL as a genus-typical estimate rather than a precisely measured figure even for the described species. No colour account specific to the Gallireya Reef population has been published. Sexual dimorphism is expected on genus-typical grounds — territorial breeding males developing bright nuptial coloration against drab, cryptically marked females and non-breeding fish — but the specific pattern for this form has not been documented, and none is invented here.
Habitat
The recorded locality for this form is Gallireya Reef, on the lake's north-central-western shore. This sits geographically some distance north of the confirmed Mylochromis mollis records at Thumbi West Island and Chimwalani Reef, both further south near Cape Maclear, which suggests mollis-type Mylochromis may range more broadly across the lake's western shore than the handful of documented sites might imply. Reefs of this kind typically combine rock structure with adjacent sand, the intermediate habitat where Mylochromis species commonly forage. Water at Gallireya Reef follows the lake's typical warm, alkaline, well-buffered profile.
Feeding
This form is presumed to feed as Mylochromis mollis and its close relatives do: foraging over sand and rubble adjacent to reef structure for small invertebrates and detrital material. No dedicated dietary study exists for the mollis complex specifically, and the conservative statement is the genus-typical generalist invertivore diet rather than a claim of specialised feeding.
Mating
No dedicated courtship study exists for this form or, in detail, for Mylochromis mollis itself. Genus-typical expectations apply: a polygynous mating system with no pair bond, males holding loosely defended territories near reef structure and displaying to passing females, with a moderate level of male-male competition during breeding condition.
Breeding
Mylochromis sp. "Mollis Gallireya" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, the universal reproductive strategy of the Lake Malawi haplochromine flock. Spawning would take place on sand near the male's territory, with the female taking the fertilised eggs into her mouth and brooding them for several weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further male or biparental care. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; a modest clutch of a few dozen eggs is a reasonable estimate by analogy with similarly sized congeners.
In the aquarium
This form is uncommon in the trade and has no husbandry record separate from Mylochromis mollis generally. A keeper who obtains it should follow genus-typical Mylochromis practice: a tank of at least 47–59 in, a sand substrate with some rockwork for territorial structure, and water matched to Lake Malawi's chemistry — roughly 75–82 °F, pH 7.7 to 8.6, well-buffered. It is expected to be reasonably peaceable by Malawi standards and workable in a mixed hap and peacock community, though this has not been tested for the Gallireya Reef form specifically.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment exists for Mylochromis sp. "Mollis Gallireya", and none can until it is formally described. Its status in the wild is unassessed; a wider-than-previously-documented range across the lake's western shore, if borne out, would suggest the mollis complex as a whole is not narrowly restricted, but this remains an inference rather than a documented population assessment for this Gallireya Reef form specifically.
