Taxonomy & naming
Mylochromis obtusus was described in 1935 by Ethelwynn Trewavas, originally in the genus Haplochromis, during her pioneering early survey of Lake Malawi's cichlid fauna for the British Museum (Natural History). It was later transferred to Mylochromis, a genus erected to unite a large assemblage of Malawi haplochromines — many of them sand-dwelling, elongate, and often molluscivorous or piscivorous — that Trewavas herself had originally scattered across “Haplochromis.” The genus name Mylochromis combines the Greek myle, “mill” or “molar,” with chromis, a classical name for a colourful fish, an allusion to the crushing pharyngeal dentition found in several of the genus's molluscivorous members. The species epithet obtusus is Latin for “blunt” or “dull,” most likely describing a comparatively blunt head or snout profile that distinguished it from congeners in Trewavas's original description.
Morphology
As in other Mylochromis, Mylochromis obtusus is expected to have an elongate, moderately compressed body built for a life over open sand and mixed sand-rock ground rather than for manoeuvring in rocky crevices. The genus overall spans a wide range of jaw and dentition types depending on whether a given species specialises on fish, snails, or general invertebrates; the specific dentition and body proportions of M. obtusus have not been documented in detail in the sources available here. Like most Malawi haplochromines it is expected to be sexually dichromatic, with breeding males more strongly coloured than females.
Habitat
