Taxonomy & naming
Nyassachromis sp. "Eucinostomus Yellow" has no scientific description, no describing author or year, and does not appear in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes or FishBase. Unlike Nyassachromis sp. "Argyrosoma Blue," which explicitly resembles the genus's type species, the first element of this trade name, "Eucinostomus," is not confidently tied here to a described Nyassachromis species; rather than guess at its origin or force a false comparison, this account treats it as an unexplained field label attached to the South East Arm population, paired with the descriptive colour qualifier "Yellow" for its breeding males. It is nonetheless clearly placed within Nyassachromis on general resemblance to the genus's slender, schooling, open-water body plan. No authority or publication date should be attached to it.
Morphology
As a member of the Nyassachromis assemblage, this form is expected to share the genus's slender, laterally compressed body built for open-water schooling rather than rock-holding, with a mid-sized figure of roughly 4–5 in TL consistent with other described genus members, an estimate rather than a measurement of South East Arm fish specifically. Non-breeding fish and females are expected to carry the plain silvery colouration typical of the genus. Breeding males are reported, per the trade name, to develop yellow body coloration — a nuptial dress documented in other Malawi haplochromines but not, to this author's knowledge, previously recorded for a Nyassachromis specifically, making this an unusually informative colour data point for the genus if the field observation holds up under closer study.
Habitat
The recorded locality for this form is the South East Arm of Lake Malawi, a broad, shallow embayment at the lake's southern end with extensive open sand and silt substrate and correspondingly large areas of open water. This matches the general habitat preference of the genus: Nyassachromis species are open-water and sand-associated schooling fish rather than rock specialists, and the South East Arm's wide sandy shallows are well suited to large foraging schools. Water in this shallow southern basin follows the lake's typical warm, hard, alkaline profile.
Feeding
Nyassachromis species are zooplanktivores, feeding in large mid-water schools on copepods and other zooplankton, occupying the same general ecological niche as the lake's "utaka" haps in Copadichromis. This form is presumed to feed the same way, foraging in schools over the open sandy shallows of the South East Arm rather than picking invertebrates from the substrate, though no dedicated dietary study exists for this population specifically.
Mating
Several Nyassachromis species build conspicuous sand-castle or sand-cone structures on the lake floor, defended by males in loose lek aggregations, while females remain in large foraging schools and visit spawning sites only to breed. This form is presumed to follow the same general pattern given its placement in the genus, though the specific behaviour, and whether it builds the sand structures documented for other genus members, has not been separately confirmed for the South East Arm population.
Breeding
Nyassachromis sp. "Eucinostomus Yellow" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, the universal reproductive strategy of the Lake Malawi haplochromine flock. Following the genus's typical lek-spawning pattern, a female would spawn at a male's sand structure or display site, take the fertilised eggs into her mouth, and rejoin the foraging school to brood them through several weeks of development before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further parental care from the male. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; a modest clutch of roughly 20 to 40 eggs is a reasonable estimate by analogy with similarly sized congeners.
In the aquarium
This form is uncommon in the trade and has no dedicated husbandry record. A keeper who obtains it should follow genus-typical Nyassachromis practice: a tank of at least 47–59 in to accommodate its active, schooling nature, a sand substrate, and water matched to Lake Malawi's chemistry — roughly 75–82 °F, pH 7.7 to 8.6, moderately hard to hard. As with other schooling Nyassachromis, keeping a group rather than a single individual is likely to produce more natural behaviour and colour display, though this has not been tested specifically for the form.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment exists for Nyassachromis sp. "Eucinostomus Yellow", and none can until it is formally described. The South East Arm is a heavily fished part of Lake Malawi, and open-water, schooling haplochromines like Nyassachromis species are generally more exposed to seine-net and small-scale trawl bycatch there than rock-dwelling mbuna. Whether this specific population has been measurably affected is not documented. The honest position is that it is unassessed.
