Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Mating

Several Nyassachromis species build conspicuous sand-castle or sand-cone structures on the lake floor, defended by males in loose lek aggregations, a behaviour documented by Ad Konings from early field surveys of the genus, including a record from the general Mphanga area. Females remain in large foraging schools and visit spawning sites only to breed. This form is presumed to follow the same general pattern given its placement in the genus, though direct confirmation of sand-structure building for this specific population has not been established here.

Breeding

Nyassachromis sp. "Mphanga" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, the universal reproductive strategy of the Lake Malawi haplochromine flock. Following the genus's typical lek-spawning pattern, a female would spawn at a male's sand structure or display site, take the fertilised eggs into her mouth, and rejoin the foraging school to brood them through several weeks of development before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further parental care from the male. Conservation

No IUCN Red List assessment exists for Nyassachromis sp. "Mphanga", and none can until it is formally described. Open-water, schooling haplochromines in Lake Malawi generally face greater bycatch pressure from inshore seine and small-scale trawl fisheries than rock-dwelling mbuna. Whether this specific Mphanga Rocks population has been measurably affected is not documented. The honest position is that it is unassessed.
