Taxonomy & naming
Nyassachromis sp. "Mphanga" has no scientific description, no describing author or year, and does not appear in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes or FishBase. Its trade name carries only the locality where it is recorded, Mphanga Rocks, without a resemblance qualifier to a specific described species. A similarly spelled field record, "Nyassachromis sp. Mpanga," appears in early Malawi cichlid literature discussing the genus's distinctive sand-structure nest-building behaviour; given the closeness of the names and the shared general locality, this form may correspond to that earlier record, but that identity is not confirmed here and should not be asserted as fact. What is clear is that it is placed within Nyassachromis on general resemblance to the genus's slender, open-water body plan. No authority or publication date should be attached to it.
Morphology
As a member of the Nyassachromis assemblage, this form is expected to share the genus's slender, laterally compressed body built for open-water schooling rather than rock-holding, with a mid-sized figure of roughly 4–5 in TL consistent with other described genus members, an estimate rather than a measurement of Mphanga Rocks fish specifically. Non-breeding fish and females are expected to carry the plain silvery colouration typical of the genus. No colour description specific to this population's breeding males has been published, and none is invented here; breeding dress across the genus ranges from blue to yellow depending on the species, and without a confirmed identification the specific pattern for this form cannot be stated with confidence.
Habitat
The recorded locality for this form is Mphanga Rocks, on Lake Malawi's north-central-western shore. Despite the rocky place name, Nyassachromis species are open-water and sand-associated schooling fish rather than rock specialists, and populations named for rocky landmarks typically use the rocks as a reference point for nearby open sand and water rather than living within the rock structure itself, in the manner of mbuna. Water at Mphanga Rocks follows the lake's typical warm, hard, alkaline profile.
Feeding
Nyassachromis species are zooplanktivores, feeding in large mid-water schools on copepods and other zooplankton, occupying the same general ecological niche as the lake's "utaka" haps in Copadichromis. This form is presumed to feed the same way, foraging in schools over open water near Mphanga Rocks rather than picking invertebrates from the substrate, though no dedicated dietary study exists for this population specifically.
Mating
Several Nyassachromis species build conspicuous sand-castle or sand-cone structures on the lake floor, defended by males in loose lek aggregations, a behaviour documented by Ad Konings from early field surveys of the genus, including a record from the general Mphanga area. Females remain in large foraging schools and visit spawning sites only to breed. This form is presumed to follow the same general pattern given its placement in the genus, though direct confirmation of sand-structure building for this specific population has not been established here.
Breeding
Nyassachromis sp. "Mphanga" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, the universal reproductive strategy of the Lake Malawi haplochromine flock. Following the genus's typical lek-spawning pattern, a female would spawn at a male's sand structure or display site, take the fertilised eggs into her mouth, and rejoin the foraging school to brood them through several weeks of development before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further parental care from the male. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; a modest clutch of roughly 20 to 40 eggs is a reasonable estimate by analogy with similarly sized congeners.
In the aquarium
This form is uncommon in the trade and has no dedicated husbandry record. A keeper who obtains it should follow genus-typical Nyassachromis practice: a tank of at least 47–59 in to accommodate its active, schooling nature, a sand substrate, and water matched to Lake Malawi's chemistry — roughly 75–82 °F, pH 7.7 to 8.6, moderately hard to hard. As with other schooling Nyassachromis, keeping a group rather than a single individual is likely to produce more natural behaviour, though this has not been tested specifically for the form.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment exists for Nyassachromis sp. "Mphanga", and none can until it is formally described. Open-water, schooling haplochromines in Lake Malawi generally face greater bycatch pressure from inshore seine and small-scale trawl fisheries than rock-dwelling mbuna. Whether this specific Mphanga Rocks population has been measurably affected is not documented. The honest position is that it is unassessed.
