Taxonomy & naming
Nyassachromis sp. "Otter" is not a formally described species. It has no scientific name of its own, no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, because no taxonomist has published a description establishing it. It is an informal taxon recognised in the field and aquarium literature, principally through Ad Konings's documentation of the southern Lake Malawi cichlid fauna. The placeholder name follows the standard convention for undescribed cichlids: the genus Nyassachromis, the abbreviation "sp." (species), and the locality in quotation marks, here "Otter," after Otter Island and Otter Point. Nyassachromis is a comparatively small genus erected within the broader revision of Lake Malawi's non-mbuna haplochromines, uniting a handful of species with a shared open-water, plankton-feeding habit distinct from the sand-sifting or rock-grazing lifestyles of many other genera. Until a revision addresses this population directly it should be treated strictly as a Konings-recognised undescribed form, and no authority or date should be attached to it.
Morphology
Nyassachromis species share a fusiform, moderately slender body built for holding position in open water rather than manoeuvring tightly among rocks, with a small, oblique, upturned mouth suited to picking zooplankton from the water column — the same general body plan seen in the lake's utaka (Copadichromis). Genus-typical adult size runs roughly 3.5–5 in; no formal measurements exist for the Otter population specifically. A verified, population-specific colour account is not available from accessible references. What can be said is the genus-typical pattern: breeding males in several Nyassachromis species show blue to blue-grey body colour with darker vertical barring and a dark humeral spot, while females and non-breeding males are plain silvery, an arrangement consistent with the genus but not separately confirmed for the Otter form.
Habitat
This form is recorded from Otter Island and Otter Point, paired localities in the southern part of Lake Malawi within the Lake Malawi National Park area — a region of clear water, extensive rocky islands, and steep drop-offs into open water. Nyassachromis species characteristically school in open water over sand near these rocky edges, feeding on drifting zooplankton rather than working the substrate directly, in the manner of the lake's utaka. The water column here follows the lake-wide pattern: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, broadly mid-20s Celsius with pH on the alkaline side of neutral. As an undescribed, locality-based form its depth range and any occurrence beyond the Otter Island–Otter Point area are not established.
Feeding
Nyassachromis as a genus are open-water zooplanktivores, schooling over sand near reef edges and picking planktonic crustaceans and other small organisms from the water column, much as the lake's utaka (Copadichromis) do. No feeding study exists for the Otter population specifically, but this genus-typical zooplanktivore mode is the most reasonable characterisation absent contrary data — a diet of drifting invertebrates taken in open water rather than substrate-sifted food.
Mating
Like other Lake Malawi haplochromines, Nyassachromis sp. "Otter" is presumed polygynous, with males establishing small display territories, often on sand near rock structure or reef edges, and courting passing females from these sites in nuptial colour. There is no pair bond. Females move between territories, choose largely on the basis of male colour and site quality, and spawn briefly before departing with the fertilised clutch in the mouth. No behavioural study specific to this undescribed population exists; the account follows the general pattern documented for the genus and for Lake Malawi's open-water haplochromines more broadly.
Breeding
Nyassachromis sp. "Otter" is a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all Lake Malawi haplochromine cichlids. After spawning, the female carries the fertilised eggs in her mouth for roughly three to four weeks, feeding little during this period, before releasing free-swimming, fully formed fry with no further parental care from either parent. Clutch size has not been documented for this form specifically; by analogy with similarly sized Nyassachromis and other utaka-like haplochromines, a modest clutch — likely a few dozen eggs — is a reasonable expectation rather than a measured fact.
In the aquarium
Nyassachromis sp. "Otter" is an uncommon aquarium fish, traded only occasionally as part of specialist southern-lake collections. Where kept, husbandry follows the general template for an open-water, plankton-feeding Lake Malawi haplochromine.
A tank of at least 47–59 in with a long swimming axis suits this schooling genus better than a heavily broken-up rockscape, since Nyassachromis naturally holds station in open water rather than hugging rock. Fine sand substrate and a modest rock structure at one end, leaving most of the tank open, reflect the natural reef-edge habitat. Water chemistry should mirror Lake Malawi's profile: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH roughly 7.7–8.6, and moderately hard to hard water. As a schooling, plankton-feeding fish, keeping a reasonable group rather than a single pair reduces aggression and lets natural shoaling behaviour show; a single dominant male with several females is standard for breeding. Diet should emphasise small, meaty foods — brine shrimp, daphnia, cyclops, and a good quality flake or small pellet — reflecting its zooplanktivorous biology, rather than the algae-rich diet suited to mbuna.
Conservation
Nyassachromis sp. "Otter" has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and as an undescribed form without a formal scientific name it has no Red List assessment of any kind. That silence is a statement about taxonomy, not about safety. The Otter Island and Otter Point area lies within the well-protected Lake Malawi National Park, which affords some measure of shelter from the most intensive shoreline pressures affecting the lake elsewhere, though ornamental collection and the broader stresses on Lake Malawi's cichlid fauna — sedimentation, fishing pressure, and habitat disturbance basin-wide — remain relevant. No conservation status should be fabricated for it. The honest statement is that it is unassessed and that its true range and status remain to be established by formal study.
