Petrotilapia sp. "Fuscous" is undescribed and carries no formal authority, publication date, holotype or entry in Eschmeyer’s Catalog of Fishes under this name. The genus Petrotilapia, established by Trewavas in 1935 for the lake’s rock-scraping mbuna, is one of the more taxonomically unsettled groups in Lake Malawi: only a handful of species have been formally described despite dozens of recognisably distinct populations, largely because the genus shows such extreme sexual dichromatism — males typically dark and females golden-brown — that colour alone, the usual field tool for distinguishing mbuna, is far less reliable here. "Fuscous" is a purely descriptive trade epithet referring to a dusky or dark-brown tone in the fish, used to separate this population informally from Petrotilapia of similar build elsewhere in the lake. It should be treated strictly as an informal label pending any formal taxonomic review of the genus.
Morphology
Like other Petrotilapia, this form has a deep-bodied, laterally compressed build with a blunt head and powerful jaw musculature, carrying multiple rows of strongly recurved, hook-tipped teeth adapted for scraping algae from rock rather than the finer, comb-like dentition of many other mbuna. Genus-typical adult size runs roughly 4–5.5 in, males somewhat larger than females. Sexual dichromatism is pronounced, as throughout the genus: males are dark, ranging from dusky brown to blue-black depending on population, while females are typically a plain golden-brown or tan. The name "Fuscous" suggests this population’s males run toward a dark dusky-brown tone rather than the more saturated blue-black seen in some other Petrotilapia, though no published description confirms the precise shade or fin pattern as diagnostic.
Habitat
This form is recorded from Fuawe Island, Jalo Reef, Maleri Island, Mbenji Island and Nakantenga Island — a cluster of rocky islands along the mid-western shore of Lake Malawi, an area with a long history of endemic mbuna diversity due to the isolation these islands provide from mainland populations. Petrotilapia characteristically occupies the wave-exposed, high-energy rock faces near the surface where turbulence keeps algal turf short and productive, typically in shallow to moderate depths of roughly 3–49 ft. Water conditions follow the lake’s norm: warm, hard and alkaline, roughly 75–82 °F and pH 7.7–8.6.
Feeding
Petrotilapia sp. "Fuscous" feeds by scraping algal turf from rock surfaces using its rows of recurved, hooked teeth, a technique suited to stripping the tough, wave-exposed algal mats that grow on the shallow rock faces the genus favours. As with other algae-scraping mbuna, the practical diet includes not just the algae itself but the diatoms, cyanobacteria and small invertebrates living within the turf. Petrotilapia are among the most specialised and aggressive algae feeders in the lake, fiercely defending productive grazing territories on the rock face against both conspecifics and other algae-eating cichlids.
Mating
Petrotilapia are strongly territorial, and males of this form are expected to hold and defend a patch of rock face year-round, combining feeding territory and breeding site in the manner typical of the genus — an unusually aggressive arrangement even by mbuna standards. There is no pair bond; females move between male territories and select a spawning partner, with courtship following the standard haplochromine pattern of display and quivering. Spawning itself likely occurs in a crevice or sheltered pocket within or adjacent to the male’s territory, though specific behavioural documentation for this named population is not available.
Breeding
This form is a maternal mouthbrooder, as is every member of Petrotilapia. After spawning, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them through incubation and early larval development, a period typically running three to four weeks during which she feeds little or not at all. She then releases free-swimming fry that receive no further parental care from either parent. Clutch size has not been documented for this specific population; Petrotilapia of comparable body size generally produce clutches in the range of a few dozen eggs.
In the aquarium
Petrotilapia sp. "Fuscous" demands a serious mbuna setup and a keeper prepared for real aggression — this genus is among the most combative in the Malawi trade. Rockwork should be extensive and stable, built into a tank of at least 59 in to give territorial males room to establish separate patches without constant confrontation; undersized tanks routinely end in one male killing weaker tankmates. A sand or fine gravel substrate suits the rock-scraping lifestyle.
Water should replicate Lake Malawi closely: temperature 75–82 °F, pH 7.7–8.6, and consistently hard, alkaline chemistry. Diet must be predominantly vegetable-based — a spirulina-forward flake or pellet as the staple — since this is one of the most committed herbivores among the mbuna, and protein-heavy foods should be kept to a minimum to avoid digestive problems. Given its genuinely aggressive territoriality, this form is better suited to a large, mbuna-only, heavily rockscaped tank than to a mixed community.
Conservation
No IUCN assessment exists for Petrotilapia sp. "Fuscous", and none can while it remains undescribed. No status, category or year should be attached to it. The genus as a whole is exposed to the general pressures on Lake Malawi’s rocky-shore cichlid fauna — ornamental collection and localised habitat disturbance around popular collecting islands — but the taxonomic confusion within Petrotilapia means even the number of distinct species and their individual ranges is not fully resolved, let alone their conservation status. The accurate statement is that this form is unevaluated and its true range beyond the recorded island sites is unknown.
