Taxonomy & naming
Petrotilapia tridentiger was described by the British ichthyologist Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935, in her foundational synopsis of the cichlid fishes of Lake Nyasa, as the type species of the genus Petrotilapia that she erected in the same work. The genus name combines the Greek "petros" (rock) with "tilapia," the generic vernacular term long used for African cichlids, giving "rock tilapia" — an apt description of the genus's tight association with wave-battered rocky shoreline. The species epithet "tridentiger" is built from Latin "tri-" (three), "dens/dentis" (tooth), and "gerere" (to bear), meaning "three-tooth-bearer," a direct reference to the tricuspid (three-pointed) outer teeth that diagnose the genus and set it apart from the bicuspid or unicuspid dentition of most other mbuna. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the species' currently accepted valid name and any synonymy.
Morphology
Petrotilapia tridentiger has the robust, muscular build typical of the genus — deeper-bodied and more powerfully constructed than most other mbuna, an adaptation to feeding against strong wave surge in shallow water. Its outer jaw teeth are densely packed and tricuspid, giving the genus its name and its diagnostic feeding tool. Adults are relatively large for a mbuna, likely reaching 5.5–6.5 in.
Male coloration in this species is one of the more interesting documented facts about it, and an unusual one for the lake: Petrotilapia tridentiger is cited, alongside Pseudotropheus zebra and Ps. tropheops in Lake Malawi and paralleled by Haplochromis obesus in Lake Victoria, as a case of genuine nuptial colour polymorphism confined to males — dominant males within a single population settle into more than one distinct breeding colour form rather than converging on one pattern. Feeding
Petrotilapia tridentiger is a specialised algae scraper, using its dense rows of tricuspid teeth to comb algal turf directly off rock surfaces exposed to heavy wave action — a niche that favours the genus's robust jaw and body over the more delicate feeding apparatus of other mbuna. This specialisation lets Petrotilapia exploit a productive but physically demanding feeding zone that many competing grazers avoid, giving the genus a degree of ecological separation from co-occurring mbuna even where their ranges overlap.
Mating
As in other Lake Malawi mbuna, Petrotilapia tridentiger is polygynous with no lasting pair bond. Males hold and aggressively defend breeding territories on the rocks, a defence made all the more forceful by the genus's characteristically muscular build and pugnacious temperament — Petrotilapia males are widely regarded among the most combative of the mbuna. Breeding
Petrotilapia tridentiger is a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all Lake Malawi mbuna. The female takes her eggs into her mouth immediately after laying, is drawn to the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin, and takes in milt in the process that fertilises the clutch she already carries. She broods the eggs and fry for roughly three to four weeks, largely without feeding, before releasing free-swimming young into cover. Water should mirror the lake — warm, hard, and alkaline, roughly pH 7.7 to 8.6. Tankmates must be similarly robust and preferably not other Petrotilapia males, since intraspecific aggression in this genus is intense; a single male with several females is the standard low-stress ratio. Diet should be spirulina- or vegetable-based, since excess protein predisposes mbuna to bloat, though the genus's active, muscular lifestyle can tolerate a somewhat varied diet.
