Taxonomy & naming
The genus Petrotilapia was erected by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1935 and is diagnosed by its predominantly tricuspid oral teeth and broad, fleshy lips — a built-in comb for stripping algae that makes the genus instantly recognisable among the mbuna, the Chichewa name for Lake Malawi's rock-dwelling cichlids. Because Petrotilapia species overlap heavily in body shape and meristic counts and differ mainly in the breeding coloration of territorial and non-territorial males, the genus has been repeatedly revised piecemeal — most notably by Jay R. Stauffer and colleagues, including a 1996 description of Petrotilapia chrysos and a 2011 paper naming five further species — with new, mostly colour-defined species continuing to be recognised as researchers work through the genus's many local forms. Petrotilapia xanthos, documented here from Gallireya Reef in the lake's north, is treated as a distinct, currently recognised species in that ongoing body of work; its precise describing author, year, and diagnostic colour pattern are not confirmed from sources available to this entry and should be checked against Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes before being treated as settled.
Morphology
Petrotilapia xanthos carries the unmistakable genus equipment: broad, fleshy lips packed with long, slender, flexible tricuspid teeth arranged in many rows, backed by a lateral band of unicuspid teeth — an algae-stripping comb that stays visible even with the mouth closed. Petrotilapia as a genus are large, robust mbuna, most species reaching 4–5.5 in standard length. As the epithet implies, breeding-status males of this species are expected to show a yellow ground colour, in the same vein as the gold males of the related Petrotilapia chrysos and the yellow-bellied males of Petrotilapia flaviventris; females and non-breeding fish are typically paler and less patterned. The specific bar pattern, fin colours, and any status-linked colour change (Petrotilapia males often shift dramatically in colour between territorial and non-territorial phases) documented for xanthos specifically are not confirmed here.
Habitat
The species is documented from Gallireya Reef, in the far northern part of Lake Malawi. Like the rest of its genus, Petrotilapia xanthos is expected to live over rock, the substrate that supplies both its algal food and its breeding territories, typically in shallow-to-moderate depths of a few metres down to perhaps 49–66 ft on wave-exposed reef and shoreline rock. Water conditions on Malawi's rocky coasts are warm, hard, and strongly alkaline year-round. Whether the species is confined to Gallireya Reef or ranges more broadly along the surrounding northern shoreline is not established from the sources available here — a pattern typical of many narrow-range Petrotilapia, which are notorious for splitting into locally distinct colour forms along short stretches of coast.
Feeding
Petrotilapia xanthos is expected to be an aufwuchs grazer in the manner of every member of its genus — using its dense comb of slender tricuspid teeth to brush algal filaments and associated small invertebrates from the surface of sunlit rock, a food source mbuna keepers call 'aufwuchs.' Related Petrotilapia also forage up into the water column for plankton when it is abundant, supplementing the rock-scraped diet with a more omnivorous intake. No dietary study specific to xanthos is confirmed here, so this entry describes genus-typical feeding ecology rather than direct observation of the species.
Mating
Like the rest of the Malawi mbuna, Petrotilapia xanthos is expected to be a polygynous, territorial breeder: a minority of males hold and defend patches of rock in full breeding colour, displaying to attract passing females, while non-territorial males and females move more freely over the rocks in a looser, less colourful state. A ripe female is drawn to a holding male's territory to spawn. No courtship study specific to xanthos is confirmed here, but this pattern — assortative mating driven by male breeding colour — is consistent across Petrotilapia and is thought to be exactly the mechanism that keeps the genus's many similar-looking, locally overlapping species reproductively distinct.
Breeding
Petrotilapia xanthos is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all Lake Malawi mbuna. The pair bond is expected to last only through spawning: the female lays her eggs on the rock, takes them into her mouth, and fertilisation follows via the male's egg-spot-marked anal fin in the standard mouthbrooder pattern, after which the female alone incubates the clutch for roughly three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. No paternal or biparental care is expected beyond spawning. Clutch size has not been documented for this species specifically, but comparable large Petrotilapia typically produce a few dozen relatively large, yolky eggs.
In the aquarium
Petrotilapia xanthos is rare to absent in the aquarium hobby, and no established trade name or husbandry history for it is confirmed here; like many narrow-range Petrotilapia color forms, any keeping notes must be extrapolated from the genus. As one of the larger mbuna, it would in principle need a spacious, long tank with abundant rockwork for grazing surfaces and broken territorial sightlines, hard alkaline water around pH 7.7-8.8, and warm tropical temperatures. Petrotilapia are herbivore-leaning omnivores best fed algae- and spirulina-based foods; rich, fatty, or high-protein foods such as bloodworms are poorly tolerated by the genus and invite digestive problems. Petrotilapia hybridise readily with look-alike congeners, so a single species per tank is the standard rule, and that caution applies with particular force to a narrow-range, colour-defined form such as this one.
Conservation
No confirmed IUCN Red List status for Petrotilapia xanthos is available from sources used in this entry, and none should be assumed. As a rock-dwelling species apparently confined to a single reef in the northern lake, it would be inherently exposed to any localised habitat disturbance there — Petrotilapia generally, and the genus's many narrow-range colour forms in particular, are considered vulnerable to shoreline sedimentation, which smothers the algal film they depend on, and to the aquarium collecting pressure that has historically targeted showy mbuna. Lake Malawi as a whole faces well-documented basin-scale pressures from fishing, catchment deforestation, and warming-driven changes in productivity. A confident conservation assessment for this species requires consulting the IUCN Red List and Catalog of Fishes directly rather than inferring one from genus-level trends.
