Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

"Blue Otter" is an undescribed cichlid from the far south of Lake Malawi, recorded around Domwe Island, Mitande Reef, and Tsano Rock — a stretch of coast within and around the Nankumba Peninsula that includes Otter Point, one of the best-known dive sites in Lake Malawi National Park. Its trade name reflects both a blue breeding colour and that locality connection. Placidochromis is a genus whose most famous member, P. electra, the "Electric Blue Hap," is one of the most recognisable cichlids in the entire aquarium hobby, and several of its relatives share a similarly striking, largely unpatterned blue nuptial dress.

Taxonomy & naming

Placidochromis sp. "Blue Otter" carries no describing author, no publication date, and no entry under a validated name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes; the name in use is an informal trade designation. It combines a colour descriptor — blue breeding colour in males — with a locality reference to the Otter Point area of the Nankumba Peninsula in southern Lake Malawi, near where Domwe Island, Mitande Reef, and Tsano Rock lie. The genus Placidochromis was formally erected by Eccles and Trewavas in 1989 to house a group of generally calm, moderate-to-large haplochromine cichlids — the genus name itself reflects that placid temperament — including P. electra, described from Chidunga Rocks near Cape Maclear and famous in the hobby as the Electric Blue Hap. Whether this Blue Otter form represents a population of P. electra itself, a closely related but distinct species, or an unrelated blue-coloured Placidochromis has not been resolved by any published taxonomic study, and no authority should be attached to it pending that work.

Morphology

As implied by its trade name, breeding males of Placidochromis sp. "Blue Otter" are described as showing a blue body colour, in the tradition of several other Placidochromis species from the southern lake, most famously P. electra. Detailed morphometric data specific to this population have not been published. The body should be expected to follow the genus-typical form: moderately elongate, deep-bodied, and laterally compressed, larger than most mbuna. Genus-typical size for Placidochromis runs to roughly 4.5–6.5 in total length depending on the species, with males somewhat larger than females; no validated maximum has been documented for this specific form. Sexual dichromatism is expected to be pronounced, as in P. electra and its relatives, with females duller, silvery, and far less conspicuously coloured than blue nuptial males.

Habitat

The form is recorded from a cluster of localities in the far south of Lake Malawi, around the Nankumba Peninsula — Domwe Island, Mitande Reef, and Tsano Rock, close to the well-known Otter Point dive site within Lake Malawi National Park. Placidochromis species typically occupy the sand-rock interface, hovering near boulders and rubble at the edge of open sand rather than deep within rocky reef or far out over open sand, generally at moderate depths. The surrounding water is warm, hard, and alkaline, consistent with Lake Malawi's southern basin throughout, and this stretch of coast is one of the better-studied parts of the lake given its inclusion in the National Park.

Feeding

Placidochromis species are generally invertivores or, in some species, more piscivorous, hovering just above the sand-rock interface and taking prey disturbed from the substrate or picked directly from rock and sand rather than grazing algae in the manner of mbuna. This hovering foraging style, holding position a short distance above the bottom while scanning for movement, is characteristic of the genus and distinguishes Placidochromis behaviourally from both the algae-scraping mbuna on the rocks above and the sand-sifting Lethrinops further out over open sand. Placidochromis sp. "Blue Otter" is presumed to follow this genus-typical feeding pattern, though no dedicated feeding study specific to this population has been published; its close relative P. electra is documented as an invertivore taking small benthic prey — insect larvae, crustaceans, and other invertebrates — from sand and rock surfaces.

Mating

Mature males are expected to hold a territory at the sand-rock interface and display their blue breeding colour to attract passing females, in keeping with the general Placidochromis pattern documented for P. electra and its relatives. Courtship follows the standard haplochromine sequence built around egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin, which the female pecks at during spawning while collecting the real eggs into her mouth. No locality-specific behavioural account has been published for this Blue Otter population. In P. electra, courtship territories are generally spaced out along the sand-rock margin rather than densely packed as on a crowded mbuna reef, reflecting the species' lower population density and calmer temperament; a similar spacing pattern would be a reasonable expectation for this Blue Otter form, though it has not been documented directly.

Breeding

As in all Lake Malawi haplochromines, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding: the female alone carries the fertilised eggs and subsequent fry in her mouth, without normal feeding, for several weeks until they are ready for independent release, with no further parental role for the male. Clutch size and brooding duration have not been documented specifically for this form; genus-typical figures for medium-sized Placidochromis suggest a moderate clutch and a brooding period of roughly three to four weeks. P. electra is well established in captive breeding, and aquarium experience with that species suggests brooding females often continue limited feeding activity later in the cycle compared with some strictly fasting mbuna, though whether this holds for wild populations, or for this undescribed Blue Otter form specifically, has not been confirmed.

In the aquarium

Placidochromis sp. "Blue Otter" would be kept along the lines of its well-known relative P. electra: a tank of at least 47–59 in with a sand substrate, moderate rockwork at the margins to reflect its natural sand-rock interface habitat, and open swimming space. Water chemistry should follow the Lake Malawi standard — hard and alkaline, pH roughly 7.7 to 8.6, temperature 75–82 °F. Placidochromis species are generally calmer than mbuna, and males are typically maintained with several females in a mixed Malawi hap community rather than kept as aggressively territorial rock-holders. Diet should include a quality cichlid pellet supplemented with small live or frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm and mysis shrimp, and fatty foods should be limited given the general susceptibility of Malawi cichlids to digestive bloat.

Conservation

Placidochromis sp. "Blue Otter" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, has no Red List status of any kind. Its documented range lies within and around Lake Malawi National Park, one of the more actively protected and monitored parts of the lake, which offers some measure of habitat security relative to unprotected coastline. That said, an undescribed form known from only a handful of nearby localities still warrants the general caution applied to narrow-range Malawi endemics regarding collection pressure, even within a protected area. Protected-area status limits some pressures, such as unregulated shoreline development, but does not by itself prevent aquarium collection, which continues under permit in parts of the park; the net effect on any single narrow-range form like this one has not been separately assessed.
