Taxonomy & naming
Placidochromis sp. "Electra Blackfin" is not a formally described species. It has no scientific name of its own, no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, because no taxonomist has published a description establishing it. It belongs to the "Electra" group — a solid, deep-blue Placidochromis that has been discussed in the aquarium and field literature since at least the 1980s and 90s (it is the subject of a dedicated 1996 Cichlid Room Companion article by L. Camenius) without ever receiving formal taxonomic treatment, making it one of the best-known undescribed cichlids in the Lake Malawi hobby. This Tanzanian population, distinguished by dark fin colouration in breeding males, carries the additional trade tag "Blackfin" to separate it from other Electra-complex populations such as the Mozambican form. Genus Placidochromis itself was erected by Eccles & Trewavas in 1989 to house a number of species previously placed in Haplochromis, uniting sand- and intermediate-habitat cichlids with a relatively calm temperament. Until the Electra complex receives formal review, this population should be treated strictly as a Konings-recognised undescribed form, and no authority or date should be attached to it.
Morphology
Placidochromis in general are moderately elongate, laterally compressed haplochromines with a somewhat pointed head and a terminal mouth suited to picking prey from sand and intermediate habitat. The Electra complex is distinguished within the genus by an unusually uniform, saturated deep-blue body colour in breeding males, without the barring or blotching seen in many related species — a striking, almost monochrome appearance that has long made it popular in the trade despite lacking a formal name. Genus-typical adult size for Electra-type Placidochromis runs roughly 5–6.5 in. This Blackfin population is distinguished specifically by dark, near-black colouration in the fins of breeding males, contrasting against the blue body — the character that names it. Females and non-breeding males are expected to be plainer and silvery, the standard haplochromine pattern for concealment while brooding.
Habitat
This form is recorded from Magunga and Makonde, both on the Tanzanian shore in the northern part of Lake Malawi. Placidochromis of the Electra type are generally associated with sand and intermediate rock-sand habitat, often at greater depths than the shallow-water mbuna community, foraging over open sand near rocky structure. The water column here follows the lake-wide profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, broadly mid-20s Celsius with pH on the alkaline side of neutral. As an undescribed, locality-based form its precise depth range and full distribution beyond the Magunga–Makonde stretch of coast are not established, though Electra-type Placidochromis are generally reported from moderate to relatively deep water compared with typical rocky mbuna.
Feeding
No dedicated feeding study exists for this population specifically. Placidochromis as a genus generally forages over sand and intermediate habitat for small invertebrates, picking prey items from the substrate rather than grazing algae or hunting in open water. Absent data specific to the Electra Blackfin form, the most defensible characterisation is a benthic invertivore, in the general manner documented for the wider Placidochromis genus and the Electra complex.
Mating
Like other Lake Malawi haplochromines, this form is presumed polygynous, with males establishing and defending small territories over sand or near rock structure, displaying their striking blue breeding colour and dark fins to attract passing females. There is no pair bond. Females move between territories, choose largely on colour and site quality, and spawn briefly before departing with the fertilised clutch in the mouth. No behavioural study specific to this undescribed population exists; the account follows the general pattern documented for Placidochromis and Lake Malawi haplochromines more broadly.
Breeding
Placidochromis sp. "Electra Blackfin" is a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all Lake Malawi haplochromine cichlids. After spawning, the female carries the fertilised eggs in her mouth for roughly three to four weeks, feeding little during this period, before releasing free-swimming fry with no further parental involvement from either parent. Clutch size has not been documented for this form specifically; by analogy with similarly sized Placidochromis species, a modest clutch on the order of several dozen eggs is a reasonable expectation rather than a measured fact.
In the aquarium
The broader Electra complex is a long-standing favourite among Malawi cichlid keepers for its striking uniform blue colouration, though the Blackfin, Tanzanian population specifically is a less commonly traded, specialist-import form. Where it is kept, husbandry follows the general template for a sand/intermediate-habitat Placidochromis.
A tank of at least 47–59 in suits an adult group, with fine sand substrate and moderate rockwork that leaves generous open sand for foraging. Water chemistry should mirror Lake Malawi's profile: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH roughly 7.7–8.6, and moderately hard to hard water, with prolonged soft or acidic conditions avoided. Placidochromis is generally considered one of the calmer non-mbuna genera, tolerating tankmates reasonably well, though a single male with several females remains the standard breeding arrangement to reduce harassment of unreceptive females. Diet should be varied — quality pellet or flake as a staple, supplemented with frozen or live invertebrates — reflecting the genus's general invertivore biology, with fatty foods limited given Malawi cichlids' susceptibility to bloat. Because provenance is the main value of a locality form like this, it should be kept apart from other Electra-complex populations to preserve its identity.
Conservation
Placidochromis sp. "Electra Blackfin" has not been evaluated by the IUCN, and as an undescribed form without a formal scientific name it has no Red List assessment of any kind. That silence is a statement about taxonomy, not about safety. As a locality-restricted population on the northern Tanzanian shore, it faces the general pressures affecting that comparatively less-surveyed stretch of the lake: ornamental collection and the broader basin-wide stresses of sedimentation and fishing pressure. No conservation status should be fabricated for it. The honest statement is that it is unassessed and that its true range and status remain to be established by formal study.
