Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Pseudotropheus fuscus belongs to the mbuna genus Pseudotropheus, the group originally used as a broad catch-all for Lake Malawi's small, barred rock-dwelling cichlids before later genus splitting pulled much of that diversity into Maylandia, Metriaclima, Chindongo, and other genera. This species has remained within Pseudotropheus proper. Its epithet, Latin "fuscus" (dark, dusky, brown), is a straightforward descriptive name referring to a comparatively subdued or dark body coloration relative to more brightly coloured relatives sharing the same reefs. Morphology

Pseudotropheus fuscus has the compact, laterally compressed body typical of rock mbuna, with a small, slightly subterminal mouth equipped with fine teeth for combing algae from rock. Adults are modestly sized, in the general 3.5–4 in range typical of the genus. Consistent with its name, the species is expected to show a comparatively dark or dusky ground colour, though the precise pattern and the degree of sexual dichromatism are not confidently documented here; as with related Pseudotropheus, dominant males in breeding condition likely intensify in colour relative to females.

Habitat

The species is documented from sites along the northern Malawian shoreline, including Chirwa Island, Kande Island, and Mara Rocks, a stretch of rocky coast typical of mbuna habitat. Like all members of the genus it is essentially confined to rock and rarely if ever crosses open sand, so its distribution tracks the scattered reefs and rock outcrops along this coast rather than forming a continuous population. Water conditions follow the lake's usual profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, well oxygenated in the shallow, wave-washed rocky littoral.

Feeding

As with essentially all Pseudotropheus, Pseudotropheus fuscus is an aufwuchs grazer, cropping the algal turf, diatoms, and associated micro-invertebrates coating sunlit rock surfaces. Feeding is territorial: an individual defends a productive patch of algae against rival grazers, since repeated close-range foraging on a maintained patch is more efficient than ranging widely across contested ground. Mating

Pseudotropheus fuscus follows the lek-like, polygynous mating system typical of Lake Malawi mbuna. Males hold small breeding territories among the rocks, intensify in colour, and display to passing females with quivering courtship movements; there is no lasting pair bond. A receptive female enters the male's territory to spawn directly on the cleared rock surface he defends, after which the classic haplochromine mouthbrooding sequence follows. Water should match the lake's chemistry — warm, hard, and alkaline, roughly pH 7.7 to 8.6 — since soft or acidic water causes chronic problems in Malawi cichlids. A single male kept with several females is the standard low-stress ratio. Diet should lean on a spirulina- or vegetable-based staple, since excess protein predisposes mbuna to bloat, with occasional small live or frozen invertebrates as a treat.
