Pseudotropheus perileucos belongs to the mbuna genus Pseudotropheus, the group originally used as a broad catch-all for Lake Malawi's small, barred rock-dwelling cichlids before later genus splitting pulled much of that diversity into Maylandia, Metriaclima, Chindongo, and other genera. This species has remained within Pseudotropheus proper. Feeding
