Taxonomy & naming
Pseudotropheus sp. "Williamsi North" is an undescribed Lake Malawi mbuna, recognised only by this trade name on the malawi.si database and in specialist hobby circles. It has no valid scientific name, no describing author, and no publication date, and none should be attached to it. The "sp." plus quoted-name format is the standard convention for a field-recognised but taxonomically undiagnosed population.
The name pairs "Williamsi," the epithet of the described species Pseudotropheus williamsi (Günther, 1893) — the type species of the genus Pseudotropheus, erected by Regan in 1921 — with "North," indicating that this form is understood as a northern-lake population of, or a form closely allied to, that species. P. williamsi itself is recorded across a wide stretch of the lake with regionally variable colouration, and hobbyists and field workers have long distinguished geographically separated populations by informal tags of this kind rather than treating each as a separate species.
Because this specific population has never been formally studied, its precise relationship to nominal P. williamsi — whether a true northern population of the same species or a distinct, more divergent form — has not been established.
Morphology
No published measurements or colour account specific to Pseudotropheus sp. "Williamsi North" were found in the sources consulted here. Genus context: Pseudotropheus species, including P. williamsi, are moderately deep-bodied, laterally compressed mbuna with the blunt head and closely packed grazing teeth typical of the mbuna guild, and adult size across the williamsi group runs roughly 3.5–4.5 in total length — offered here as a genus-typical estimate rather than a confirmed measurement for this form.
P. williamsi itself typically shows a blue ground colour with black vertical barring in breeding males, a pattern broadly shared across much of the species' range, with females duller. Whether this northern population matches that pattern precisely, or shows any distinguishing variation, has not been documented in the sources available here.
Habitat
Two of the four documented localities for this form — Makonde and Manda — lie on the Tanzanian shore of northern Lake Malawi; the other two, Magunga and Nkhata Bay, lack confirmed positions in the records available here, though Nkhata Bay is a well-known site on Malawi's north-central-western shore. Taken together, the recorded localities place this form in the northern quarter of the lake, consistent with its "North" trade-name tag.
As with P. williamsi generally, the fish is expected to occupy rocky substrate — boulder fields and rock faces — rather than open sand. Lake Malawi's upper rocky zone runs broadly 24-28 degC and pH 7.7-8.6, hard and alkaline, with mbuna habitat typically found from a couple of metres to about 66 ft depth. No site-specific depth record exists for this form beyond those lake-wide figures.
Feeding
As with P. williamsi and mbuna generally, this form is presumed to be an aufwuchs grazer, rasping algae, diatoms, and associated micro-invertebrates from sunlit rock with the small, closely packed teeth typical of the group. No feeding study specific to this population has been published; the assignment follows from its relationship to P. williamsi and its rocky habitat rather than direct observation.
That dentition, together with a comparatively long gut adapted to digesting plant material, is a trait shared across P. williamsi and its allied populations rather than a feature separately confirmed for this specific northern form.
Mating
Social behaviour has not been documented specifically for this form. By analogy with P. williamsi and mbuna generally, mature males are expected to hold individual rock territories year-round and display to passing females, with aggression concentrated against similarly patterned rivals — a category that, for a form this close to nominal P. williamsi, would plausibly include other populations along that species' range. Females are not territorial and move between territories.
The mechanics of courtship follow the pattern documented across Malawi mbuna: a colour-bearing male performs a quivering lateral display in front of an approaching female, leading her toward his territory rather than pursuing her into open water. Persistent, low-level pressure toward non-receptive females is normal mbuna behaviour and is the main reason a single male is always kept with several females in captivity, spreading his attention and reducing the risk that any one female is harassed to exhaustion.
Breeding
Reproduction is presumed to follow the standard Lake Malawi maternal mouthbrooding pattern: the female takes eggs into her mouth at the male's territory, draws in sperm via the egg-spot markings on his anal fin, and broods the fertilised clutch orally for roughly three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. No clutch size has been documented for this specific form; genus-typical broods for similarly sized Pseudotropheus run to a few dozen eggs, with no paternal care after fertilisation.
The egg-spot mechanism behind this process is one of the more distinctive features of Lake Malawi cichlid biology: the yellow-orange markings on the male's anal fin closely mimic the fish's own eggs in size and colour, and the female's instinct to gather stray eggs into her mouth is what draws her toward the male's vent, where she takes in sperm instead. This indirect fertilisation method, shared across virtually the entire haplochromine radiation of the lake, lets fertilisation happen without either fish releasing gametes into open water where they would be exposed and vulnerable.
In the aquarium
Pseudotropheus sp. "Williamsi North" is a scarce trade fish, more likely to be found through specialist Malawi cichlid importers dealing in named locality forms than through general retail. Husbandry follows the standard rock-dwelling mbuna template: a tank of at least 47 in with dense rockwork over sand, hard alkaline water (pH roughly 7.8-8.6, temperature 24-28 degC), and a plant-forward diet of spirulina flake, pellet, and algae wafers, with meaty foods kept to a minimum since protein-heavy feeding predisposes mbuna to bloat.
A single male with several females is the standard low-conflict grouping. As with all undescribed locality forms, keep it apart from other Pseudotropheus williamsi populations and other williamsi-allied trade forms to prevent hybridisation and preserve its value as a distinct, traceable population.
Conservation
No IUCN assessment exists for Pseudotropheus sp. "Williamsi North" as a distinct entity, since it has never been formally described; the described species it is allied to, P. williamsi, may itself carry a Red List assessment, but that status does not transfer automatically to an unconfirmed regional form. Its documented range in the northern lake shares the general pressures facing Lake Malawi's inshore rocky habitat — sedimentation, warming surface waters, and cumulative fishery pressure across the basin. Formal description would be the prerequisite for any future Red List evaluation of this specific form; until then its status is properly recorded as unassessed.
