Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Tropheops sp. "Black Hara" has no formal scientific name. The informal designation combines a colour descriptor — "Black," for the dark body colouration of mature males — with "Hara," a locality qualifier used to separate this population from other similarly dark Tropheops forms recognised elsewhere in Lake Malawi; several unrelated populations across the lake carry a "black" trade designation, and the qualifier prevents confusion between them. It is placed in the genus Tropheops on the strength of the diagnostic blunt head and comb-like, obliquely implanted outer teeth used to scrape algae from rock. Its documented locality, Gallireya Reef, lies in the far northern part of the lake near Chilumba, a stretch of coastline that has produced numerous distinct Tropheops trade forms; no published work has formally compared this population against its northern-lake neighbours.

Morphology

A compact, blunt-headed mbuna on the standard Tropheops build, with thick lips and the genus's characteristic comb-like rows of outer teeth. The trade name identifies mature males by an overall dark, near-black body colouration — a melanistic pattern documented in several Lake Malawi rock-dwelling cichlid populations, sometimes associated with deeper, dimly lit reef habitat. Beyond this diagnostic dark colouration, a full account of the form's fin markings or female colouration has not been published, so no further colour detail should be asserted here. Genus-typical size for Tropheops is roughly 3.5–4.5 in total length for adult males; no formal measurements have been published for this specific population.

Habitat

This form is documented from Gallireya Reef, a site in the far northern part of Lake Malawi near Chilumba. Like other Tropheops, it is expected to hold territories on rock in the intermediate zone between pure rock and open sand, with territorial males often found at somewhat greater depths than foraging females and juveniles — a pattern documented elsewhere in the genus and one plausibly connected to the darker colouration named in the trade name, since reduced light at depth is associated with darker pigmentation in several Malawi mbuna. Water conditions follow the standard Malawi profile: temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius and pH on the alkaline side of neutral. No precise depth record has been published for this population specifically.

Feeding

Tropheops sp. "Black Hara" grazes aufwuchs — the mixed film of algae, diatoms, and associated micro-invertebrates coating sunlit or semi-shaded rock — using the genus's comb-like outer teeth to scrape material loose. This is the standard feeding mode across Tropheops and most rock-dwelling mbuna, tying the fish to algae-productive rock surfaces. Territorial males defend patches of productive turf as both a feeding resource and a display site, while juveniles and subordinate fish forage more freely across open rock.

Mating

Breeding follows the standard mbuna pattern of male territoriality and female choice. Dominant males hold and defend small territories on rock, where they display their dark breeding colouration to attract passing females. There is no pair bond, and a successful male may spawn with several females visiting his territory over time. No mating study specific to this population has been published; this account follows the well-documented pattern shared across Tropheops.

Breeding

As in all Lake Malawi cichlids, breeding is by maternal mouthbrooding. After courtship at the male's territory, the female releases a small number of eggs and takes them into her mouth almost immediately; she is drawn to the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin and, in mouthing at them, takes in sperm that fertilises the clutch already held in her mouth. She then broods the eggs and larvae for roughly three to four weeks without feeding significantly, releasing free-swimming fry that receive no further parental care. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; by analogy with similarly sized Tropheops it is likely modest, on the order of a few dozen eggs.

In the aquarium

Tropheops sp. "Black Hara" appears occasionally in mbuna-focused collections, valued for its dark, near-black nuptial colouration, a striking contrast to the more common orange and blue Tropheops forms. A rock-dominated tank with a base of fine sand suits it well; rockwork should be arranged into distinct piles with clear sightline breaks so a dominant male's territory does not extend across the whole tank. A footprint of at least 47 in is a sensible minimum for a harem group.

Water should mirror Lake Malawi conditions: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH roughly 7.7-8.6, and moderately hard to hard water, held stable. Diet should lean vegetable — a spirulina-based flake or pellet as the staple, with only occasional protein-rich foods, since a high-protein diet is strongly linked to bloat in this group. One male to several females is the standard stocking ratio; a lone male without enough females to spread his attention will harass tankmates.

Conservation

Tropheops sp. "Black Hara" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form without a formal scientific name, has no Red List assessment. It is currently documented from a single reef in the far northern lake; rock-dwelling mbuna populations restricted to individual reefs are characteristically vulnerable to concentrated ornamental collection even when the genus as a whole is common, so captive-bred stock is the more sustainable trade source. No formal conservation status should be attached to it pending a taxonomic description.
