Pseudotropheus sp. "Williamsi Maleri" has no formal scientific description of its own, no describing author, and no year of publication. Its trade name follows the standard convention for undescribed mbuna: the genus Pseudotropheus, the abbreviation "sp." marking it as unnamed, and a descriptive tag combining a relationship to a described species with a locality. "Williamsi" signals that this population is understood to be close to the formally described Pseudotropheus williamsi (Günther, 1893), a well-known, dark-barred mbuna widespread around Lake Malawi's rocky shores, while "Maleri" specifies the collection locality — the Maleri Islands (Nakantenga, Namalenje, and Nankoma) in the southern lake, a well-studied island group that sits within the protected waters of Lake Malawi National Park. Because P. williamsi itself shows recognisable, geographically distinct colour populations around the lake, this Maleri form is treated as one such population pending any formal taxonomic revision that might either fold it into P. williamsi or split it out as a separate species.
Morphology
This form follows the general Pseudotropheus williamsi body plan: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed mbuna body with the robust jaws and specialised dentition — outer bicuspid or unicuspid teeth over inner tricuspid rows — used to graze algae from rock surfaces. The williamsi complex is characterised by a blue-grey ground colour crossed by several dark vertical bars, the archetypal "zebra" mbuna pattern, and this Maleri population is presumed to carry a broadly similar pattern, though the precise shade, bar count, and any locality-specific colour differences from other williamsi-complex populations have not been documented in detail in the sources available to us. Size is not separately documented for this form; described P. williamsi runs to roughly 4.5 in, and that figure is a reasonable working estimate pending direct documentation of the Maleri population.
Habitat
Pseudotropheus sp. "Williamsi Maleri" is documented from the Maleri Islands — Nakantenga, Namalenje, and Nankoma — a well-known rocky island group in the southern part of Lake Malawi, within the protected area of Lake Malawi National Park. Like other members of the williamsi complex, it is expected to hold territory in shallow-to-intermediate rocky habitat, among boulders and crevices, rather than on open sand. Water conditions here match Lake Malawi generally: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. This kind of tight, rock-specific home range is typical of the mbuna community generally: individual populations rarely cross the intervening stretches of open sand between rocky outcrops, which is exactly the isolating mechanism that has allowed so many closely related, look-alike forms to diverge in colour across otherwise similar habitat around the lake.
Feeding
As with other Pseudotropheus, this form is expected to be a specialised algae grazer, using its dentition to rasp Aufwuchs — the mat of filamentous algae and its associated diatoms and small invertebrates — from rock surfaces. This diet is well documented across the wider williamsi complex and across rock-dwelling Pseudotropheus generally, though no feeding study specific to the Maleri population has been published. The Aufwuchs mat itself is not a single food type but a mixed community of filamentous green algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria, and the small invertebrates that live within it, and different mbuna species partition this resource by grazing angle, bite force, and preferred rock texture rather than competing head-on for an identical diet. Dense mbuna populations can crop the algal turf on a favoured rock down to a fine stubble, and territorial males often defend a feeding patch as fiercely as a spawning site, since a well-grazed rock represents a defensible, renewable food source rather than a one-off meal.
Mating
Breeding in Pseudotropheus is polygynous and territorial: males hold rock or crevice territories and display to females, who visit rather than pair-bond with a particular male. No behavioural account specific to this Maleri population has been published, so its mating system is inferred from the wider williamsi complex and the genus as a whole. Courtship follows the conventional haplochromine sequence: a territorial male performs a quivering lateral display in front of a visiting female, leading her toward his spawning site if she is receptive. The male's anal fin typically carries egg-spot markings — round, egg-like blotches — that the female is drawn to peck at after depositing her own eggs, a mechanism that draws sperm into her mouth and fertilises the clutch she is already holding. A dominant male may court and spawn with several females in the course of a single day, and females themselves show no lasting preference for one male over another beyond his current colour and territory quality.
Breeding
Pseudotropheus sp. "Williamsi Maleri" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all Pseudotropheus, including the described P. williamsi it is named after. Following spawning at a male's territory, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and carries them through incubation, releasing free-swimming fry after several weeks with no further parental involvement from the male. Clutch size and brooding duration have not been documented specifically for this population. At Lake Malawi's stable warm temperatures the female typically broods for roughly three to four weeks, during which she retreats into rock crevices for shelter and largely stops feeding, drawing on body reserves to see the clutch through development. Fry are released as fully formed, free-swimming miniatures able to feed independently from the moment of release, and they immediately seek cover among rocks to avoid predation, including from adult cichlids of their own species. There is no further parental care once the fry are released, and a healthy female can produce several broods per year under stable conditions.
In the aquarium
"Williamsi Maleri" is a recognisable form in the hobby thanks to the classic barred pattern of the wider williamsi complex, sought by keepers wanting a Maleri Islands provenance rather than a generic williamsi-type mbuna.
As with the complex generally, a tank furnished with dense rockwork and abundant broken sightlines suits its territorial, algae-grazing habits, and a reasonable ratio of females to each territorial male reduces harassment. A tank of at least 47 in is a sensible minimum. Water should match Lake Malawi conditions closely: warm, hard, and clearly alkaline, since prolonged exposure to soft or acidic water causes chronic problems in mbuna.
Diet should be predominantly vegetable-based — a quality spirulina-based flake or pellet, with occasional blanched vegetables — since high-protein foods are poorly tolerated by algae-grazing mbuna and increase the risk of bloat. Because several geographically distinct williamsi-complex populations exist around the lake and can look superficially similar, keepers who want to preserve a genuine Maleri line should avoid mixing this form with williamsi-type fish of uncertain or different origin.
Conservation
Pseudotropheus sp. "Williamsi Maleri" has no IUCN Red List assessment of its own, because it has never been formally described and has no valid scientific name available to be assessed separately from P. williamsi. This is a statement about taxonomic status, not population health. The Maleri Islands sit within Lake Malawi National Park, which affords the area some general protection from disturbance, but no dedicated population data exists to characterise this specific form's conservation status.
