Aquascape & setup

Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

The trade name follows the standard convention used across the genus's many undescribed forms — Tropheops, "sp." marking it as unnamed, and a descriptive tag drawn from a visible trait, here the black dorsal fin of breeding males. The genus Tropheops itself was carved out of the old, broad "Pseudotropheus tropheops complex," now recognised as an unusually speciose flock — dozens of geographically distinct, largely undescribed colour forms across the lake, considered one of the clearest examples of rapid cichlid speciation in Lake Malawi. This form's precise relationship to other named or unnamed Tropheops is not established in the sources available to us; it should be treated strictly as a Makanjila-area, informally recognised form pending taxonomic review.

Morphology

"Black Dorsal" carries the genus's diagnostic body shape: a robust, laterally compressed mbuna with a notably steep, sloping forehead profile and a downturned, underslung mouth adapted for grazing algae from rock surfaces at an angle, rather than the more level bite typical of other mbuna genera. Its trade name identifies a dark or solidly black dorsal fin as the defining feature of breeding males, contrasting with a paler body colour; the specific body colour and any barring pattern have not been documented in detail for this population in the sources available to us, so no single description of overall male colouration is asserted here beyond the black dorsal fin the name references. Size is not separately documented for this form and is presumed to fall within the genus-typical Tropheops range of roughly 3.5–4.5 in.

Habitat

This form is documented from the southeastern shore of Lake Malawi at Luwala Reef and Makanjila Rocks, with a further record at Chimwalani Reef — an area of rocky habitat along the Malawian coast south of Makanjila. Like other Tropheops, it is expected to hold territory in shallow rocky habitat, grazing algae from exposed rock faces rather than ranging onto open sand. Water conditions here match Lake Malawi generally: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. This kind of tight, rock-specific home range is typical of the mbuna community generally: individual populations rarely cross the intervening stretches of open sand between rocky outcrops, which is exactly the isolating mechanism that has allowed so many closely related, look-alike forms to diverge in colour across otherwise similar habitat around the lake.

Feeding

Tropheops are specialised algae grazers, distinguished within the mbuna community by their steep, downturned mouth, which lets them graze the algal mat (Aufwuchs) from rock surfaces at a pronounced angle — often tilting the body nearly vertical, head-down, against the rock — a feeding posture largely unique to this genus among Lake Malawi cichlids. This diet and feeding mode is essentially universal across Tropheops, and this population is expected to follow the same pattern, though no feeding study specific to it has been published.

Mating

Breeding in Tropheops is polygynous and territorial, following the pattern typical of mbuna: males hold and defend rock territories, displaying to females who visit rather than pair-bonding. No behavioural account specific to this population has been published, so its mating system is inferred from the genus as a whole. Courtship follows the conventional haplochromine sequence: a territorial male performs a quivering lateral display to a visiting female and leads her toward his spawning site if she is receptive. As in other mbuna, the male's anal fin typically carries egg-spot markings that the female pecks at after laying her own eggs, drawing sperm into her mouth to fertilise the clutch she already holds. A dominant male may spawn with multiple females over the course of a day, and the arrangement is a lek-like system with no lasting pair bond.

Breeding

Tropheops sp. "Black Dorsal" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all Tropheops. Following spawning at a male's rocky territory, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and carries them through incubation, releasing free-swimming fry after several weeks with no further parental involvement from the male. Clutch size and brooding duration have not been documented specifically for this form. At Lake Malawi's stable warm temperatures the female typically broods for roughly three to four weeks, sheltering in rock crevices and largely fasting for most of that period before releasing free-swimming fry capable of independent feeding from the outset. There is no further parental care once the fry are released, and the fry immediately seek cover among rocks to avoid predation, including from adult cichlids of their own species. A healthy female can produce several broods a year under stable conditions.

In the aquarium

"Black Dorsal" is a locality-specific Tropheops form kept chiefly by aquarists interested in Makanjila-area populations rather than the more widely traded Tropheops forms.

As with the genus generally, a tank furnished with dense rockwork and abundant broken sightlines suits its territorial, algae-grazing habits, and a reasonable ratio of females to each territorial male reduces harassment. A tank of at least 47 in is a sensible minimum. Water should match Lake Malawi conditions: warm, hard, and clearly alkaline, since prolonged exposure to soft or acidic water causes chronic problems in mbuna.

Diet should be predominantly vegetable-based — a quality spirulina-based flake or pellet, with occasional blanched vegetables — mirroring the algae-heavy diet this genus depends on in the wild; high-protein foods are poorly tolerated by grazing mbuna and increase the risk of bloat. Because many Tropheops forms look broadly similar aside from the specific trait their trade name references, keepers wanting to preserve a pure Makanjila-area line should avoid mixing this form with other black-finned Tropheops of uncertain origin.

Conservation

Tropheops sp. "Black Dorsal" has no IUCN Red List assessment, because it has never been formally described and has no valid scientific name available to be assessed. This reflects its taxonomic status, not a claim about its population health. As a rock-restricted mbuna from a specific stretch of the southeastern Malawi shoreline, it faces the general pressures common to Lake Malawi's ornamental cichlids, but no dedicated population data exists to characterise its actual conservation status. Because Tropheops populations are typically confined to narrow, rock-specific stretches of shoreline and rarely cross open sand to mix with neighbouring populations, a locality-restricted form like this is inherently more exposed to local over-collection or habitat disturbance than a wide-ranging species would be, even though the wider genus is abundant across the lake as a whole.
