Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

It has never been formally described, and no authority, IUCN status, or FishBase entry should be attached to it.

Taxonomy & naming

Tropheops sp. "Dark" is an informal, undescribed taxon: no authority, no publication date, and no entry under a validated name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The genus Tropheops, split from Pseudotropheus by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1984, contains many such field-recognised populations, distinguished from one another chiefly by locality and colour rather than by any published diagnostic character. "Dark" is a naming pattern repeated across several Lake Malawi mbuna genera for forms whose dominant males present an unusually deep, near-black body colour rather than the blue, orange, or barred patterns typical of their relatives. Likoma Island, the type locality here, sits in Malawian waters near the Mozambique shore and is one of the lake's better-studied islands for mbuna diversity. No formally described Tropheops has been identified as this population's closest relative.

Morphology

The form carries the standard Tropheops body plan: a short, deep, laterally compressed mbuna profile with a steeply sloping forehead and a small, downturned mouth adapted for grazing algae at a steep angle against rock. Its distinguishing trait is coloration rather than shape — dominant males are reported markedly darker than the run of Tropheops at the same localities, tending toward blackish or deep charcoal tones rather than the brighter blues, oranges, or yellows common elsewhere in the genus, though a detailed published colour description specific to this population is not available and none beyond this general characterisation is asserted here. Females and non-dominant males are expected to be plainer and less intensely marked, following the genus pattern. Size is not separately documented and is presumed genus-typical, roughly 3.5–4.5 in TL.

Habitat

Likoma Island and Yofu Bay lie in the middle-eastern part of Lake Malawi, an area of rocky shoreline that, despite Likoma's status as Malawian territory, sits closer to the Mozambique shore than to mainland Malawi. As with other Tropheops, this population is expected to occupy the wave-washed and intermediate rocky zone, grazing exposed rock in the well-lit upper water column. Water chemistry matches Lake Malawi generally: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Rocky littoral habitat of this kind is intensely contested among Lake Malawi's many mbuna genera, all competing for the same sunlit algal resource, and fine-grained differences in depth, wave exposure, and rock-face angle between neighbouring reefs are thought to be part of what allows so many closely related forms to coexist without one outcompeting the rest.

Feeding

Tropheops is a specialist aufwuchs grazer across the genus, using its steep, downturned mouth to rasp filamentous and adnate algae from rock at a near-vertical angle. "Dark" is expected to follow this feeding pattern without modification, though no study specific to this population has been published. Feeding-bone studies across the genus (Conith et al. 2020, BMC Evolutionary Biology) show that jaw and pharyngeal shape shift measurably with the depth and angle a population feeds at, evidence that Tropheops as a whole sits under real selective pressure to specialise its grazing posture reef by reef. Aufwuchs itself is not pure algae: it is a mixed mat of diatoms, filamentous algae, cyanobacteria, and the small invertebrates living within it, so even a strict grazer takes in a meaningful amount of animal protein incidentally. Feeding territories in this genus double as spawning sites, which is why males defend them so persistently against both feeding competitors and rival suitors.

Mating

Breeding follows the standard Tropheops pattern: territorial males hold and defend patches of rock, displaying in whatever colour they carry — in this case, an unusually dark presentation — to females who visit rather than forming lasting pairs. No published account documents mating behaviour specific to this population. Because neighbouring Tropheops populations at different reefs often carry visually distinct male colours despite being difficult to separate by body shape alone, colour is thought to function as a mate-recognition cue that limits hybridisation between look-alike forms — a pattern documented across the mbuna radiation generally and one reason Malawi cichlid taxonomy leans so heavily on live colour photographs from the collection site. Male aggression toward rival Tropheops, including toward similarly coloured intruders of other genera, is a defining feature of life on a crowded reef, and much of a dominant male's energy budget goes into defending his patch of rock rather than foraging widely.

Breeding

Tropheops sp. "Dark" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all Tropheops. After spawning at the male's territory, the female takes the eggs into her mouth and broods them for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further involvement from the male. Clutch size has not been documented for this form. Tropheops gracilior, the best-studied species in the genus, is documented brooding for about 25 days, a figure used across the genus as a working benchmark in the absence of species-specific data. The brooding female typically stops feeding almost entirely for most of this period, drawing on stored reserves, and will hold the clutch in her mouth even under stress before finally releasing free-swimming fry that are already capable of independent feeding. Tropheops in general breed readily once established in captivity, which is part of why locality-specific forms have proliferated in the hobby even without formal descriptions to back them.

In the aquarium

"Dark" is kept chiefly by aquarists specifically interested in Likoma Island locality forms rather than as a mainstream Tropheops offering. It should be housed on the standard mbuna template: dense rockwork with plenty of broken sightlines, a footprint of at least 47 in, and enough females per territorial male to spread aggression. Water should be warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, matching the lake. Diet should stay predominantly vegetable-based — spirulina flake or pellet with occasional blanched greens — since high-protein foods elevate the risk of Malawi bloat in grazing mbuna. Its dark colour makes it visually distinctive against brighter Tropheops forms, which helps keepers avoid accidental crosses, but it should still be kept apart from other Tropheops locality forms to preserve a clean line.

Conservation

Tropheops sp. "Dark" has no IUCN Red List assessment: it has never been formally described and has no valid scientific name to assess. That is a statement about taxonomy, not population health. As a rock-restricted mbuna from a specific island-and-bay system, it is exposed to the general pressures affecting Lake Malawi's ornamental cichlids — habitat sedimentation and aquarium collection — but no dedicated population study exists for this form. More broadly, Lake Malawi itself is under sustained strain: sediment and nutrient runoff from deforested catchments smothers exactly the clean, sunlit rock that aufwuchs-grazing mbuna like Tropheops depend on, and warming surface water is strengthening thermal stratification in ways that reduce the nutrient upwelling supporting the lake's productivity generally. None of this is documented as a specific threat to this particular form, but it is the backdrop against which every rock-restricted, single-lake mbuna population should be read.
