Taxonomy & naming
Tropheops sp. "Chinyamwezi" has no formal scientific name. The informal designation follows the standard convention for Malawi's undescribed mbuna, taking its name directly from Chinyamwezi Island, the site where the population was recorded. It is placed in Tropheops on the strength of the genus's diagnostic blunt head and comb-like, obliquely implanted outer teeth used to scrape algae from rock. The reef between Chinyamwezi Island and the Nankumba Peninsula has drawn particular attention from Ad Konings, who documented it as a site harbouring several notable Malawi cichlid populations, including Cynotilapia sp. "Chinyankwazi" and the closely related Tropheops sp. "Chinyankwazi" from the neighbouring Chinyankwazi Island (Konings, Cichlids Yearbook, vol. 1). No published work has formally distinguished this Chinyamwezi population from Tropheops tropheops, the described type species of the genus, which is also recorded in the general area; the population is treated here as a separately recognised, locality-based trade form pending taxonomic study.
Morphology
A compact, blunt-headed mbuna on the standard Tropheops build, with thick lips and the genus's characteristic comb-like rows of outer teeth. Konings' field notes from Chinyamwezi Reef record an orange-blotch (OB) colour morph within the local Tropheops population — an irregular patchwork of orange or yellow blotches over a darker ground colour, a polymorphism documented in a number of Lake Malawi rock-dwelling cichlid populations and typically more common in females. Beyond this documented OB morph, a full account of the standard male nuptial colouration for this population has not been published. Genus-typical size for Tropheops is roughly 3.5–4.5 in total length for adult males; no formal measurements have been published for this form.
Habitat
Tropheops sp. "Chinyamwezi" is documented from Chinyamwezi Island, part of a reef system in the southern lake near the Nankumba Peninsula. Konings (Cichlids Yearbook, vol. 1) described this reef as remaining submerged to a depth of at least 79 ft even at its shallowest point, with its base meeting sand at roughly 344 ft — a physical profile that, during historically low lake-level stands, may have let the reef act as a refuge for rock-dwelling cichlids that would otherwise have lost all suitable habitat in the dried-up southern basin. As with other Tropheops, the fish itself is expected to hold territories in the intermediate zone between rock and sand rather than at the reef's greatest depths. Water conditions follow the standard Malawi profile: temperatures in the mid-20s Celsius and pH on the alkaline side of neutral.
Feeding
Tropheops sp. "Chinyamwezi" grazes aufwuchs — the mixed film of algae, diatoms, and associated micro-invertebrates coating sunlit rock — using the genus's comb-like outer teeth to scrape material loose. This is the standard feeding mode across Tropheops and most rock-dwelling mbuna, tying the fish to algae-productive rock surfaces in the shallow to intermediate zone. Territorial males defend patches of productive turf as both a feeding resource and a display site.
Mating
Breeding follows the standard mbuna pattern of male territoriality and female choice, with courtship and spawning taking the characteristic "T-position": Konings' field notes from Chinyamwezi Reef describe the male positioning his snout against the female's flank near her vent as she deposits eggs, a posture documented widely across Lake Malawi's haplochromine cichlids and used by males to stimulate spawning and monitor the female's egg release. Dominant males hold and defend small territories on rock, displaying breeding colouration — including, in this population, the orange-blotch morph noted above — to attract passing females. There is no pair bond, and a successful male may spawn with several females visiting his territory over time.
Breeding
As in all Lake Malawi cichlids, breeding is by maternal mouthbrooding. Following the T-position spawning act described above, the female takes the released eggs into her mouth almost immediately; she is drawn to the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin and, in mouthing at them, takes in sperm that fertilises the clutch already held in her mouth. She then broods the eggs and larvae for roughly three to four weeks without feeding significantly, releasing free-swimming fry that receive no further parental care. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; by analogy with similarly sized Tropheops it is likely modest, on the order of a few dozen eggs.
In the aquarium
Tropheops sp. "Chinyamwezi" is uncommon in the hobby, and no dedicated husbandry record specific to this population is available beyond its documented orange-blotch colour morph. General Tropheops care applies: a rock-dominated tank with a base of fine sand, arranged into distinct piles with clear sightline breaks so a dominant male's territory does not extend across the whole tank. A footprint of at least 47 in is a sensible minimum for a harem group.
Water should mirror Lake Malawi conditions: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH roughly 7.7-8.6, and moderately hard to hard water, held stable. Diet should lean vegetable — a spirulina-based flake or pellet as the staple, with only occasional protein-rich foods, since a high-protein diet is strongly linked to bloat in this group. One male to several females is the standard stocking ratio; a lone male without enough females to spread his attention will harass tankmates.
Conservation
Tropheops sp. "Chinyamwezi" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form without a formal scientific name, has no Red List assessment. It is documented from a single reef system in the southern lake; rock-dwelling mbuna restricted to a single reef are characteristically vulnerable to concentrated ornamental collection even when the wider genus is common lake-wide, so captive-bred stock is the more sustainable trade source. No formal conservation status should be attached to it pending a taxonomic description.
