Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Boadzulu is one of the lake's better-studied reefs, host to dozens of named locality forms across several genera, and this Tropheops is one more piece of that mosaic — a population distinguished, like most Tropheops "sp." forms, essentially by where it was collected. Taxonomy & naming

Tropheops sp. "Boadzulu" is an informal, undescribed taxon: it has no describing author, no publication date, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. Its trade name follows the standard convention for undescribed Tropheops — genus, "sp." marking it unnamed, and a locality tag, here Boadzulu Island. The genus Tropheops was carved out of the old, unwieldy Pseudotropheus by Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1984 and has since proven to be one of the clearest examples in the lake of a radiation outrunning formal taxonomy: dozens of geographically isolated, distinctively coloured populations exist, of which only a handful have been formally described. Boadzulu Island itself is a well-documented reef in the southeastern lake that has yielded named locality forms across many cichlid genera, and this Tropheops population is treated as a distinct, informally recognised entity pending a taxonomic review that has not yet been undertaken.

Morphology

This form carries the genus's diagnostic body plan: a short, deep, laterally compressed mbuna body, a steeply sloping forehead, and a small, downturned mouth set with bicuspid outer teeth backed by tricuspid inner rows — the toolkit of a fish that rasps algae from rock at a steep angle rather than picking at it. Because its trade name is locality-based rather than colour-based, no specific colour or pattern claim is documented for this population in the sources available here, and none is invented; keepers should treat photographs taken at Boadzulu Island as the reliable reference rather than any generic description. Size is not separately documented for this form and is presumed to fall within the genus-typical Tropheops range of roughly 3.5–4.5 in TL.

Habitat

Boadzulu Island and Makokola Reef sit near the southeastern end of Lake Malawi, in the stretch of coast near Mangochi that has produced a large number of named cichlid locality forms across many genera. Like other Tropheops, this population is expected to hold territory on wave-washed and intermediate rocky habitat, grazing algae from exposed rock faces in the well-lit upper part of the water column rather than ranging onto open sand. Water conditions match Lake Malawi generally: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Reefs like Boadzulu that have yielded dozens of named locality forms across many genera are a useful illustration of how finely partitioned Lake Malawi's rocky littoral is: closely related mbuna sharing the same general habitat type routinely coexist by specialising on subtly different depths, rock faces, or feeding angles.

Feeding

Tropheops as a genus is a specialist algae grazer, using its steep, downturned mouth to rasp the algal mat (aufwuchs) from rock surfaces at a pronounced angle, often tilting nearly vertical, head-down, against the rock. This feeding mode is close to universal across the genus, and "Boadzulu" is expected to follow the same pattern, though no feeding study specific to this population has been published. Feeding-bone studies across the genus (Conith et al. 2020, BMC Evolutionary Biology) show that jaw and pharyngeal shape shift measurably with the depth and angle a population feeds at, evidence that Tropheops as a whole sits under real selective pressure to specialise its grazing posture reef by reef. Aufwuchs itself is not pure algae: it is a mixed mat of diatoms, filamentous algae, cyanobacteria, and the small invertebrates living within it, so even a strict grazer takes in a meaningful amount of animal protein incidentally. Feeding territories in this genus double as spawning sites, which is why males defend them so persistently against both feeding competitors and rival suitors.

Mating

Breeding in Tropheops is polygynous and territorial: males hold and defend patches of rocky substrate that double as feeding and spawning ground, displaying in nuptial colour to females who visit rather than pair-bonding with any one male. No behavioural account specific to this population exists, so its mating system is inferred from the genus as a whole. Because neighbouring Tropheops populations at different reefs often carry visually distinct male colours despite being difficult to separate by body shape alone, colour is thought to function as a mate-recognition cue that limits hybridisation between look-alike forms — a pattern documented across the mbuna radiation generally and one reason Malawi cichlid taxonomy leans so heavily on live colour photographs from the collection site. Male aggression toward rival Tropheops, including toward similarly coloured intruders of other genera, is a defining feature of life on a crowded reef, and much of a dominant male's energy budget goes into defending his patch of rock rather than foraging widely.

Breeding

Tropheops sp. "Boadzulu" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all Tropheops. Following spawning at a male's territory, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and carries them through incubation — roughly three to four weeks, in line with the genus — releasing free-swimming fry with no further parental involvement from the male. Clutch size and brooding duration have not been documented specifically for this form. Tropheops gracilior, the best-studied species in the genus, is documented brooding for about 25 days, a figure used across the genus as a working benchmark in the absence of species-specific data. The brooding female typically stops feeding almost entirely for most of this period, drawing on stored reserves, and will hold the clutch in her mouth even under stress before finally releasing free-swimming fry that are already capable of independent feeding. Tropheops in general breed readily once established in captivity, which is part of why locality-specific forms have proliferated in the hobby even without formal descriptions to back them.

In the aquarium

"Boadzulu" is a locality-specific Tropheops form of interest chiefly to keepers collecting named reefs rather than a widely marketed fish. As with the genus generally, a tank with dense rockwork and abundant broken sightlines suits its territorial, algae-grazing habits, with a footprint of at least 47 in and a healthy ratio of females to each territorial male to spread aggression. Water should match Lake Malawi conditions — warm, hard, and clearly alkaline — since prolonged exposure to soft or acidic water causes chronic health problems in mbuna. Diet should be predominantly vegetable-based: a quality spirulina-based flake or pellet, with occasional blanched vegetables, mirroring the algae-heavy diet this genus depends on in the wild; rich, high-protein foods raise the risk of the digestive illness aquarists call Malawi bloat. Because Tropheops populations can look superficially similar across localities, keepers wanting a genuine Boadzulu line should avoid mixing it with Tropheops of different or uncertain origin.

Conservation

Tropheops sp. "Boadzulu" has no IUCN Red List assessment, because it has never been formally described and has no valid scientific name available to be assessed. This reflects its taxonomic status, not a claim about its population health. As a rock-restricted mbuna tied to one reef system, it faces the general pressures common to Lake Malawi's ornamental cichlids — sedimentation of rocky habitat and collection for the aquarium trade — but no dedicated population data exists to characterise its actual conservation status. More broadly, Lake Malawi is under sustained strain from sediment and nutrient runoff off deforested catchments, which smothers exactly the clean, sunlit rock that aufwuchs-grazing mbuna like Tropheops depend on, alongside warming surface water and the well-documented decline of the lake's commercial fish stocks.
