Taxonomy & naming
Fowler's cory was described by the American ichthyologist James E. Böhlke in 1950 (in The Fish Culturist), from a specimen taken at Chancho Caño near Pebas, in the Amazon system of Loreto, Peru. The species honours the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler.
It was placed in Corydoras Lacépède, 1803 (family Callichthyidae), as nearly all cory cats were. When Dias, Tencatt and colleagues revised the Corydoradinae in 2024 — partitioning the long-overgrown genus into several lineages such as Brochis, Hoplisoma, Osteogaster and Gastrodermus — Fowler's cory was retained in Corydoras in the strict sense, the lineage anchored on the type species C. geoffroy and containing many of the long-snouted Amazonian species. Its familiar name and its current valid combination therefore coincide: Corydoras fowleri. In the hobby it is sometimes confused with, or traded alongside, similar long-nosed western-Amazonian corys, and it has been moved around in the older literature, but it stands as a valid species.
Morphology
Fowler's cory is one of the larger, more elongate corys, reaching about 2.5 in in standard length (around 2.5 in total length), with females growing larger and fuller-bodied than males. It is a 'long-snouted' species: the head is drawn out into a notably elongate, somewhat pointed snout, giving it a different profile from the blunt-faced dwarf corys, while retaining the genus's defining twin rows of bony scutes down each flank and the hard helmeted head.
Three pairs of barbels fringe the downturned mouth at the tip of the long snout, used to probe and sift the substrate. As in all corys the dorsal, pectoral and adipose fins bear stiff, mildly venomous leading spines. The colour is a fairly plain greyish to brownish ground with fine darker speckling and a darker dorsal region, the understated patterning typical of the long-snosed western-Amazon group.
Habitat
Corydoras fowleri is a fish of the western (upper) Amazon basin, recorded from the lowlands of Loreto in Peru and adjacent parts of Colombia, with the type locality near Pebas, Peru. It inhabits quiet tributaries, creeks and the shallow margins of larger rivers, typically over sand with leaf litter and submerged wood.
These are warm, often clear to lightly stained, soft and acidic waters; reported aquarium parameters for the species are a pH of roughly 6.0–7.2 and temperatures of about 70–75 °F, somewhat cooler than the upper end tolerated by many tropical corys. As a long-snouted, bottom-foraging fish it favours soft substrates it can probe, and like all corys it is a facultative air-breather, surfacing to gulp atmospheric air absorbed through a vascularised hindgut in oxygen-poor pools.
Feeding
Fowler's cory is a benthic omnivore and detritivore, working the bottom and using its elongate snout and barbels to probe deeper into soft substrate than the blunt-faced corys can, sifting out insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans, fallen organic matter and detritus. It is an opportunist rather than a specialist. In the aquarium it readily takes all prepared sinking foods — tablets, granules and larger flakes — and relishes live or frozen bloodworm, white worm, grindal worm, Daphnia and Tubifex, which double as conditioning foods for spawning.
Mating
Detailed published spawning observations for C. fowleri are limited, but the species follows the well-studied Corydoras pattern of an egg-laying shoaler with no pair bond. A ready female cleans a spawning site and the group becomes active; a male takes up the characteristic 'T-position' at right angles to her head, and she appears to take his milt into her mouth. Sperm is thought to pass rapidly through her gut to fertilise the few eggs cradled in a basket formed by her clasped pelvic fins, which she carries to the cleaned surface and presses into place — the sequence repeating a few eggs at a time until the clutch is complete.
Breeding
Fowler's cory has been bred in captivity, with several hobbyist breeding reports on record, though it is not bred in commercial volume. Spawning is typically encouraged by conditioning a group well and then performing a cool, large water change that mimics the onset of the rainy season, dropping the temperature several degrees; a group skewed toward more males than females helps. The adhesive eggs receive no parental care — the adults will eat them — so breeders move either the eggs or the parents. Eggs hatch in roughly three to five days depending on temperature, and the fry, once the yolk sac is absorbed, take microworm, baby brine shrimp and powdered foods, growing on steadily.
In the aquarium
C. fowleri is a moderately available and rewarding cory for the keeper who can give it room. Being a larger, long-snouted species it appreciates more floor space than the dwarf corys, and a soft sandy substrate is genuinely important: the long snout is its specialised feeding tool, and sharp or coarse grit abrades and infects the barbels, blunting the very feature that defines the fish.
It is a shoaling species and should be kept in groups of six or more — singletons and pairs are stressed — over a clean, open sandy bottom in a tank with a generous footprint. Keep the water warm but not hot (about 70–75 °F), soft and slightly acidic to neutral (pH around 6.0–7.2), well filtered and well oxygenated, with a gentle current and regular changes. It is peaceful and suits a community of tetras, larger rasboras, pencilfish and calm dwarf cichlids, with nothing aggressive or large enough to bully it. The standard cautions apply: the fin spines snag in nets, so a cup is safer, and a stressed cory can release a skin toxin that can be fatal in the small volume of a transport bag, so move it with care.
Conservation
Corydoras fowleri was assessed by the IUCN in 2014 as Least Concern. It has a reasonably wide distribution across the western Amazon lowlands of Peru and Colombia, and that broad range, together with the generally intact state of much of its habitat, underlies the assessment. That said, the western Amazon faces mounting pressures — deforestation, road-building, oil and mineral extraction, and pollution — that degrade the tributary and floodplain habitats this species uses, and the ornamental-fish trade does collect it from the wild. None of these currently threatens the species as a whole, but they are the kind of broad, cumulative pressures that warrant ongoing monitoring of Amazonian freshwater fishes generally.
