Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

'hongi' is a small, intensely colored rock-dwelling mbuna from the far northeastern shores of Lake Malawi, where dominant males wear an electric-blue body capped by a yellow-to-orange dorsal fin and throat. Despite being one of the most heavily traded Malawi cichlids on the market — sold as the "Hongi," "Red Top Hongi," or "Kimpuma Red" — it has never been formally described and carries no valid scientific name. It is, in the strict sense, a fish known to the hobby long before it was known to science, named after Hongi Island off the Tanzanian coast where its most vivid populations live.

Taxonomy & naming

Labidochromis sp. 'hongi' is an undescribed species: it has no published description, no designated holotype, and no valid binomial. It does not appear in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes or in FishBase, both of which list only the formally described members of the genus, and authorities including Ad Konings and the malawi.si (Stuart M. Grant / M.K. Oliver) species database carry it under the provisional label Labidochromis sp. 'hongi' — the quoted, lower-case 'hongi' being the convention for an operational trade form awaiting formal study. The genus Labidochromis was erected by Ethelwynn Trewavas of the British Museum (Natural History) in her 1935 "Synopsis of the cichlid fishes of Lake Nyasa," originally for the single species Labidochromis vellicans; Digby Lewis's 1982 revision expanded it to roughly nineteen species. Today around nineteen Labidochromis are recognized as valid, with as many as twenty-odd additional forms — sp. 'hongi' among them — awaiting description, a backlog ichthyologists have been in no hurry to clear. The fish takes its name not from a person but from a place: Hongi Island, a small rocky island off the northeastern (Tanzanian) shore of Lake Malawi, where its most strongly colored population occurs. The hobby names grew out of that geography and out of the male's red-orange dorsal cap — "Red Top Hongi" and "Super Red" describe the fin, while "Kimpuma" (also sold as "Kimpuma Red" or "Red Top Kimpuma") is a separate vernacular/collection label that has come to be used for the same or a closely allied northern red-top form. Because the fish was distributed and line-bred in the trade for years before any scientific account, exactly which named reef populations belong under one description remains an open question.

Morphology

This is a small mbuna even by the modest standards of its genus — most Labidochromis do not exceed about 3 in, and only a few top 4 in. Sources following Konings give mature males of sp. 'hongi' to roughly 4 in and females to about 3 in; hobby references put the typical adult nearer 3 in with a captive lifespan of around six years. The body is the slender, laterally compressed mbuna form, and the head carries the genus's defining feature: a narrow, sharply pointed snout set with a small mouth whose elongated, forward-leaning (procumbent) outer teeth form a delicate forceps — the very trait that gives Labidochromis its name. The coloration is what made the fish famous. Dominant, sexually active males show a saturated pale-to-electric blue body crossed by darker bars, topped by a yellow-to-orange dorsal fin and a matching wash on the throat and head; this red-top contrast is reported to be most intense in fish from Hongi Island itself, with other populations running more variable. Females and subordinate males are far plainer — brownish overall, with at most a faint yellow tint in the unpaired fins. As in many mbuna, stressed or subordinate fish flush a set of dark vertical bars across the whole body, which fade again as the fish settles or reasserts dominance. The 'hongi' is easily confused in shops with unrelated blue-and-orange Malawi cichlids and, confusingly, shares its place name with an entirely different fish, Placidochromis sp. 'electra blue' / 'blue Hongi', from the same island.

Habitat

Labidochromis sp. 'hongi' is a Lake Malawi endemic with a narrow range along the far northeastern arc of the lake, in Tanzanian and adjacent Mozambican waters. The malawi.si database records it from Puulu Island, Hongi Island, Ngkuyo Island, Lundo Island and Undu Point — a cluster of rocky localities on the northeastern coast — and aquarium-trade accounts describe it as known from the eastern shore roughly between Liuli and Undu Reef, taking in Hongi and Lundo. Its biotope is a deep, sediment-rich rocky habitat: rather than the bright, clean shallow rock of many mbuna, this fish favours rocky ground around 33 ft down where fine sediment settles among the boulders. Like most Labidochromis it is tied to broken rock and cannot safely cross the open sand and water that separate reefs, which is why so many members of the genus — and this form in particular — are confined to a handful of adjacent reefs and have diverged into reef-specific colour populations. The water is the warm, hard, strongly alkaline medium typical of Malawi's rocky littoral: a lake-wide pH near 8.3 and conductivity of roughly 200–250 µS/cm, with temperatures at around 23 ft varying between about 22 and 82 °F through the seasons. Hobby references give a maintenance envelope of roughly 73–82 °F, pH 7.5–8.5 and moderate hardness, consistent with those field conditions.

Feeding

Labidochromis sp. 'hongi' is an aufwuchs feeder — it works over the "biocover" of algae, diatoms, detritus and small invertebrates that carpets the rocks. Within the genus, feeding strategies vary: some Labidochromis pick small crustaceans and insect larvae from the substrate, others scrape periphyton with chisel-shaped teeth, and a third group — which Konings places sp. 'hongi' among, alongside Labidochromis gigas and Labidochromis joanjohnsonae — searches the aufwuchs specifically for filamentous algae. In practice this makes it best described as an omnivore with a vegetable lean: it consumes algae and the small organisms living within the biocover, using its narrow pointed snout to probe crevices and pockets in the rock that broader-mouthed grazers cannot reach. That niche — picking the rock matrix rather than rasping it bare — is the classic Labidochromis adaptation to a crowded rocky reef, letting a small fish exploit food that its bulkier mbuna neighbours leave behind. In the aquarium the practical consequence is dietary: like most mbuna it should be fed a diet with a substantial plant/algae component (spirulina-based prepared foods) and not overfed on rich protein, to which the genus readily runs to obesity and digestive trouble.

Mating

Like all Lake Malawi mbuna, Labidochromis sp. 'hongi' is a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder with no pair bond. In the wild most Labidochromis are not strongly territorial — only some males hold and defend a small cave among the rocks year-round, while females range freely through the habitat foraging — and spawning takes place wherever a ripe female and a displaying male meet, with the male leading her to his cave. A male courts by displaying in front of the female; a single male typically fertilizes the whole clutch. The species is described as somewhat aggressive toward its own kind but generally tolerant of other species, a temperament that flips in the confines of an aquarium. There, fish that are largely non-territorial in the open lake become territorial: males stake out and defend caves, principally against rival males of their own species, and two dominant males will fight — sometimes to the death of the loser. The standard response, in the lake's terms and the tank's, is a harem: one male kept with three or more females so that aggression is spread and the male can hold and colour up over a defended site. Aquarium-trade keepers reinforce the same prescription on the practical side: a single 'hongi' is generally given a minimum tank of about 55 gallons, well furnished with a network of rock caves and hiding places, with only one male per tank and the group overstocked with similarly tempered mbuna so that no single fish becomes a constant target.

Breeding

Labidochromis sp. 'hongi' is a maternal (ovophilous) mouthbrooder. After the male's display draws a willing female, she lays a small batch of eggs and immediately takes them back into her mouth; drawn to the egg-spot markings on the male's anal fin, she mouths at them and in doing so takes in milt that fertilizes the clutch already held in her buccal cavity. Clutches are small, in keeping with the fish's size: aquarium observations attributed to Knabe (1992) record fry broods of roughly 7 to 18 young, released about three weeks after spawning — a figure carried through Konings' Labidochromis accounts and the malawi.si record. The brooding female retreats among the rocks and probably releases her fry there. Labidochromis are described as semelparous-brooding in the sense that, once released, the fry are not normally retaken into the mother's mouth (or only briefly within a day), and fry-guarding females have not been observed in the wild; parental investment effectively ends at release. The species breeds readily in captivity, which is precisely why it is so widely available as line-bred and F1 stock — and why care must be taken: the 'hongi' will hybridize freely with other mbuna and with other blue Labidochromis, so maintaining clean stock means keeping it away from congeners and similarly patterned species.

In the aquarium

Labidochromis sp. 'hongi' is a good-to-excellent beginner's mbuna by the standards of the group: it is hardy, adaptable within the Lake Malawi envelope, and not so aggressive that it reliably kills every rival in the tank. That relative mildness is real but should not be overstated — it is an mbuna and it behaves like one. A workable minimum is a 55-gallon (roughly 200-litre) tank with strong biological filtration and, critically, sufficient surface footprint that territories can be split across the rockwork. A 75-gallon or larger tank greatly eases the chemistry and aggression management and is advisable if you intend a colony. Water must be hard and alkaline: pH 7.8–8.5, general hardness in the 10–20 °dGH range, carbonate hardness (KH) 8–15, and temperature 73–82 °F (73–82 °F). The lake's chemistry is not negotiable for this fish's health — soft or acidic water leads to colour loss, depressed immunity, and the chronic digestive and systemic condition the hobby calls Malawi bloat. Regular partial water changes (25–30 % weekly) and a stable carbonate buffer are more important than any supplement or medication.

The tank design should reflect the species' rocky, sediment-patched biotope. Build a rear and side wall of piled rock — limestone, tufa, slate, or Malawi-appropriate beach stone — with a network of caves, crevices, and overhangs large enough for at least one private retreat per fish. Leave the front third to half of the tank as open sand: fine pale sand, 1–2 in deep, not substrate mix with plant nutrients. Labidochromis sp. 'hongi' and its tankmates do not eat rooted plants and the fish will appreciate low-light Java fern or Anubias anchored to rock, though heavy planting is both unnecessary and incompatible with the mbuna aesthetic. Good flow and surface agitation from a powerhead or canister return are more important than any decorative plant.

Compatibility should be chosen carefully. The 'hongi' is among the more peaceable mbuna — it does not typically shred fins or pin fish into corners the way Melanochromis auratus or Pseudotropheus crabro will — but it is sexually active, it targets its own congeners first, and it hybridizes with other Labidochromis on contact. Keep only one male of the species, with three to five females, and do not mix it with Labidochromis caeruleus (the common yellow lab) or any other blue-and-orange Labidochromis: colour-similarity triggers aggression and the two hybridize freely, which destroys both bloodlines. Appropriate tankmates are other mid-sized, robust mbuna from Malawi's rocky zone that are clearly different in colour pattern — Cynotilapia afra, Metriaclima estherae, Iodotropheus sprengerae, or non-conflicting Pseudotropheus. Avoid: Malawi haplochromines (Aulonocara, large Copadichromis, Nimbochromis) unless the tank is very large and the haps are adults; any fish requiring soft or acidic water; and anything under about 3 in that will be harassed relentlessly.

Feeding is straightforward. The species is an aufwuchs/algae-leaning omnivore in the wild and should be fed accordingly: spirulina-based flake or pellet as the dietary staple, supplemented with occasional algae wafers, blanched vegetable matter (spinach, pea, cucumber), and small live or frozen invertebrates — brine shrimp, daphnia, or cyclops — two or three times a week for variety. Avoid beef heart, worm-heavy carnivore mixes, and high-protein pellets not formulated for mbuna. The single most common keeper mistake for this genus and group is overfeeding protein-rich foods, which leads predictably to Malawi bloat — a rapid, frequently fatal combination of systemic infection and digestive impaction characterized by abdominal swelling, white stringy feces, and lethargy. Feed small amounts twice daily, never more than the fish clear in two minutes, and keep a consistent vegetable component year-round.

Breeding occurs without much intervention once a colony is established, a healthy sex ratio is maintained, and water quality is kept up. The female alone mouthbroods for approximately three weeks; she will refuse food throughout and should not be stripped early unless she appears to be ailing. Remove the female to a quiet, furnished 10–20 gallon holding tank a few days before she releases, or release her into thick-structure cover and remove the male. Released fry are large enough to take crushed spirulina flake and baby brine shrimp immediately. The 'hongi' is a prolific hobby fish with an enormous pool of captive-bred stock, so purchasing F1 or tank-raised fish from a reputable keeper rather than wild-caught imports is both ethically sound and practical — captive fish are disease-hardened and acclimated to tap water. Be selective: because the species has been line-bred for years, exaggerated "super red" strains and hybridized fish are widespread; fish from a keeper who sources single-location Hongi or Lundo Island bloodlines and keeps the species in species-only or carefully chosen species-group tanks are a better long-term investment for anyone who cares about the fish's integrity.

Conservation

Because Labidochromis sp. 'hongi' has never been formally described, it has not been assessed by the IUCN and carries no Red List category — its status is, in conservation terms, Not Evaluated. That absence is itself informative: a narrow-range, reef-bound rock-dweller can be wiped from a locality long before a name is attached to it. The 'hongi' is a localized northeastern-shore endemic, dependent on a few rocky reefs it cannot leave, which makes it exactly the kind of fish exposed to habitat-scale pressures even where the species itself is common in the trade. Lake Malawi as a whole faces mounting stress: a warming climate is strengthening the lake's thermal stratification and weakening the seasonal mixing that drives its productivity, while shoreline deforestation and agriculture load the inshore rocky zone with the very sediment this fish already tolerates at the upper edge — increased siltation smothers the algal aufwuchs that rock-grazing mbuna depend on. Heavy artisanal and commercial fishing pressure on the lake compounds the picture. None of these is documented as a specific, present threat to this particular form, and it remains abundant in captivity through prolific breeding; but its very narrow wild range and its reliance on clean rocky reef are the context in which its long-term status should be read. The most immediate hobby-side conservation concern is genetic: decades of line-breeding for ever-redder "super red" tops, and casual hybridization with other blue mbuna, mean that much aquarium stock no longer matches the wild Hongi Island fish.
