Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Cynotilapia sp. "Elongatus Mdoka" has never been formally described, has no describing author or publication date, and does not appear under a validated name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. It is a member of what Malawi cichlid literature informally calls the "elongatus" complex within Cynotilapia — populations distinguished from typical, more compact Cynotilapia by a noticeably slimmer, more elongate body shape, with local colour forms named for their collection site. "Mdoka" identifies this population's locality on the northern Malawian shore. The genus Cynotilapia (Regan, 1922) is itself defined by unicuspid, dog-like teeth, unusual among mbuna, most of which carry bicuspid or tricuspid teeth adapted to scraping algal turf. Whether the "elongatus" complex represents one variable species or several cryptic ones separated across many reefs has not been resolved by any published revision.

Morphology

The defining feature carried in this form's own name is body shape: a more slender, elongate profile than the comparatively deep-bodied build typical of most Cynotilapia, such as C. afra. This more torpedo-like shape is shared across the "elongatus" complex regardless of collection site. Colour has not been documented specifically for the Mdoka population in the sources available for this article; other "elongatus" forms recorded elsewhere in the lake tend toward the blue-based, black-barred pattern typical of the genus, but the precise shade, bar count, and fin colour recorded at Mdoka are not established here, and none is invented. Genus-typical size for small Cynotilapia runs to roughly 3–3.5 in total length, males larger than females.

Habitat

Mdoka lies on Lake Malawi's northern Malawian shore, a rocky stretch also known in the aquarium trade as the type locality of an unrelated Maylandia population. This Cynotilapia "elongatus" form occupies the same general rocky littoral habitat typical of the genus — boulder fields and rock faces interspersed with sand, generally within the upper 66 ft or so of the water column, though no specific depth survey has been published for this population. The surrounding water follows Lake Malawi's standard rocky-shore chemistry: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline.

Feeding

Cynotilapia's diagnostic unicuspid "dog-tooth" dentition sets its feeding apart from most other mbuna, which use closely packed bicuspid or tricuspid teeth to scrape tightly bound algal turf directly off rock. Cynotilapia species instead pick loose diatoms, filamentous algae, and fine organic detritus from both rock and sand surfaces, often foraging over open, sediment-dusted rock rather than defending a dense algal mat. "Elongatus Mdoka" is presumed to follow this genus-wide feeding pattern, with no dedicated dietary study published for this specific population.

Mating

No breeding behaviour has been documented specifically for "Elongatus Mdoka". The genus follows the standard mbuna pattern seen throughout Lake Malawi's rocky shore: mature males establish and defend a small territory, often no more than a patch of rock or a shaded crevice, and display to passing females in breeding colour rather than building a nest. Cynotilapia territories tend to be smaller and less fiercely contested than those of larger mbuna genera such as Maylandia or Petrotilapia, consistent with the genus's generally lower level of intraspecific aggression. Courtship follows the typical haplochromine sequence, with a receptive female circling a displaying male and spawning with him over open substrate.

Breeding

As in every Lake Malawi haplochromine, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding. The female takes fertilised eggs into her mouth immediately after spawning and carries them, without feeding normally, until the fry are large enough to be released as free-swimming young; the male provides no further care. Clutch sizes in small Cynotilapia species are modest, typically a few dozen eggs, and the brooding period runs roughly three to four weeks in the genus generally. None of these specifics have been confirmed for the Mdoka population itself, so the figures given here are genus-typical expectations rather than documented measurements.

In the aquarium

"Elongatus Mdoka" is an uncommon aquarium fish, reaching hobbyists only sporadically. Where kept, it should be treated as a standard small mbuna: abundant rockwork built into caves and broken sightlines, a sand substrate, and water matching Lake Malawi's rocky zone — hard, strongly alkaline (pH roughly 7.7–8.6), and warm (75–82 °F). A tank of at least 39.5–47 in footprint suits a group kept as one male with several females, since Cynotilapia male aggression, while milder than in many mbuna, is still present. Diet should lean vegetable — a good spirulina-based flake or pellet supplemented sparingly with small invertebrates — mirroring the genus's natural mix of algae and picked micro-invertebrates, with fatty, protein-heavy foods avoided because of the elevated risk of Malawi bloat common to the genus.

Conservation

"Elongatus Mdoka" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form with no formal scientific name, carries no Red List status of any category — an absence of assessment, not a statement of safety. The documented range is limited to the Mdoka locality on Lake Malawi's northern shore. As with most single-site Cynotilapia colour forms, a narrow known range is a reasonable basis for caution in how heavily any one reef population is collected for the aquarium trade, even where no specific threat has been documented.
