Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

Taxonomy & naming

Cynotilapia sp. "Elongatus Ndumbi" has never been formally described, has no describing author or publication date, and does not appear under a validated name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. It belongs to what Malawi cichlid literature informally calls the "elongatus" complex within Cynotilapia — populations set apart by a slimmer, more elongate body than typical Cynotilapia such as C. afra, occurring at scattered localities around the lake and named for their collection site. This form is recorded at Ndumbi Rocks, near Likoma Island in the south-central lake — the same general area where the field survey work of Ribbink and colleagues in the early 1980s documented a separate, standard-bodied, near-black Cynotilapia population known as C. sp. "Ndumbi". "Elongatus Ndumbi" is treated as distinct from that form on the basis of its different body shape, though both carry the same locality name.

Morphology

The defining trait recorded in this form's own name is body shape: a slimmer, more elongate profile than the deeper-bodied build typical of most Cynotilapia, a feature shared across the "elongatus" complex regardless of collection site. Colour has not been documented specifically for this Ndumbi Rocks population in the sources available for this article; unlike its neighbour C. sp. "Ndumbi", which is recorded as almost entirely black, no comparable colour account exists for the elongate form, and none is invented here. Genus-typical size for small Cynotilapia runs to roughly 3–3.5 in total length, males larger than females.

Habitat

Ndumbi Rocks lies in the south-central part of Lake Malawi, close to Likoma Island. Rocky-shore field surveys of this area, beginning with Ribbink and colleagues' early 1980s work, documented a rare, cave-dwelling Cynotilapia population here — the standard-bodied C. sp. "Ndumbi" — and this elongate-bodied form is recorded from the same general locality, occupying the typical Cynotilapia rocky littoral habitat of boulder fields and rock faces interspersed with sand, generally within the upper 66 ft of the water column. Water chemistry follows Lake Malawi's standard rocky-shore profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline.

Feeding

Cynotilapia's diagnostic unicuspid "dog-tooth" dentition sets its feeding apart from most other mbuna, which use closely packed bicuspid or tricuspid teeth to scrape tightly bound algal turf directly off rock. Cynotilapia species instead pick loose diatoms, filamentous algae, and fine organic detritus from rock and sand surfaces, often foraging over open, sediment-dusted rock rather than defending a dense algal mat. "Elongatus Ndumbi" is presumed to follow this genus-wide feeding pattern, with no dedicated dietary study published for this specific population.

Mating

No breeding behaviour has been documented specifically for "Elongatus Ndumbi". The genus follows the standard mbuna pattern seen throughout Lake Malawi's rocky shore: mature males establish and defend a small territory, often no more than a patch of rock or a shaded crevice, and display to passing females in breeding colour rather than building a nest. Cynotilapia territories tend to be smaller and less fiercely contested than those of larger mbuna genera such as Maylandia or Petrotilapia. Courtship follows the typical haplochromine sequence, with a receptive female circling a displaying male and spawning with him over open substrate.

Breeding

As in every Lake Malawi haplochromine, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding. The female takes fertilised eggs into her mouth immediately after spawning and carries them, without feeding normally, until the fry are large enough to be released as free-swimming young; the male provides no further care. Clutch sizes in small Cynotilapia species are modest, typically a few dozen eggs, and the brooding period runs roughly three to four weeks in the genus generally. None of these specifics have been confirmed for the Ndumbi Rocks population itself, so the figures given here are genus-typical expectations rather than documented measurements.

In the aquarium

"Elongatus Ndumbi" is an uncommon aquarium fish, reaching hobbyists only sporadically given the narrow range from which it is collected. Where kept, it should be treated as a standard small mbuna: abundant rockwork built into caves and broken sightlines, a sand substrate, and water matching Lake Malawi's rocky zone — hard, strongly alkaline (pH roughly 7.7–8.6), and warm (75–82 °F). A tank of at least 39.5–47 in footprint suits a group kept as one male with several females, since Cynotilapia male aggression, while milder than in many mbuna, is still present. Diet should lean vegetable — a good spirulina-based flake or pellet supplemented sparingly with small invertebrates — with fatty, protein-heavy foods avoided given the genus's general susceptibility to Malawi bloat.

Conservation

"Elongatus Ndumbi" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form with no formal scientific name, carries no Red List status of any category — an absence of assessment, not a statement of safety. The documented range is limited to Ndumbi Rocks near Likoma Island. Rocky-shore field surveys in this exact area have already flagged a related Cynotilapia population, C. sp. "Ndumbi", as rare and geographically restricted; a narrow known range is reasonable grounds for caution in how heavily this elongate form's population is collected as well, even where no specific threat has been documented.
