Gephyrochromis sp. "Patricki Minos" has no describing author, no year of publication, and no FishBase entry. It circulates under the field name "patricki," which Ad Konings tentatively assigns to the genus Gephyrochromis in his field guide to the lake's cichlids pending a formal taxonomic account, with "Minos" recording the specific reef on the Mozambican shore where this population was documented. Gephyrochromis itself was erected by George Boulenger in 1901 for Gephyrochromis moorii, its type species, with a second species, Gephyrochromis lawsi, added by Geoffrey Fryer in 1957; both are sand-associated cichlids with a distinctive slender, comb-like outer dentition unlike the stouter teeth of rock-grazing mbuna. "Patricki" has not been formally combined with either described species and should not be treated as a synonym of one; it remains an open question whether it represents a population of an existing species, a new species awaiting description, or something closer to one of the genus's other undescribed forms.
Morphology
Described Gephyrochromis are small, moderately elongate cichlids: Gephyrochromis moorii reaches a documented maximum of about 4.5 in total length, and Gephyrochromis lawsi is similar, with males somewhat larger than females in both species. The genus's diagnostic feature is dental — slender, comb-like or forceps-like outer teeth suited to combing loose sand and periphyton rather than rasping firmly attached rock algae — and the general body plan across the genus favours hovering just above open sand over the flattened, rock-hugging shape of true mbuna. Colour has not been published for the "patricki" field form specifically, including this Minos Reef population, so this account does not assert a pattern for it; by comparison, the two described species show that Gephyrochromis males can carry real colour interest — steel-blue to slate-grey with an orange throat patch in dominant Gephyrochromis moorii, blue-violet with a gold-orange dorsal blaze in Gephyrochromis lawsi — but which, if either, this undescribed form resembles has not been documented.
Habitat
This form is recorded from Minos Reef on the Mozambican shore of Lake Malawi. Gephyrochromis as a genus is characteristic of open sandy ground at or near rocky reefs rather than of bare rock itself: Gephyrochromis moorii lives in small mixed-sex groups combing loose sediment, sometimes at surprising depth (Konings recorded it at around 131 ft at one Malawian site), while Gephyrochromis lawsi occupies the transitional zone where steep rocky shore gives way to sand, typically in the range of roughly 13–82 ft. No depth or habitat detail specific to the Minos Reef population has been published, so the range given here reflects that genus-typical sand-and-transition-zone envelope rather than a documented figure for this exact form. Water conditions follow Lake Malawi's usual hard, alkaline inshore chemistry.
Feeding
The genus Gephyrochromis contains two distinct feeding modes among its described members: Gephyrochromis moorii combs loose sand and its periphyton coating with comb-shaped teeth, while Gephyrochromis lawsi feeds chiefly on loose aufwuchs and small invertebrates at the rock-sand interface. No feeding study has been published for the "patricki" field form or this Minos Reef population specifically, so its exact mode cannot be stated as documented fact; given its likely sand-association it plausibly falls into one of these two genus-typical strategies, but which one, and in what proportion, has not been confirmed.
Mating
Reproductive behaviour has not been documented for this form. By analogy with its described relatives, Gephyrochromis males are understood to be weakly territorial rather than fiercely site-defending: Gephyrochromis moorii forages in loose mixed-sex groups with males excluding rivals from feeding patches through brief chases rather than holding fixed spawning territories, and Gephyrochromis lawsi shows a similarly loose pattern, with solitary, non-aggregating females. Whether "Patricki Minos" follows the same social structure, and any courtship detail specific to it, have not been recorded in the sources available to this article.
Breeding
As with every Lake Malawi cichlid, Gephyrochromis sp. "Patricki Minos" is presumed to be a maternal, ovophilous mouthbrooder: the female takes fertilised eggs into her mouth and incubates them for roughly three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further role from the male after spawning. Clutch size has not been documented for this population; in the better-studied Gephyrochromis lawsi, wild clutches are reported around 25-40 fry, and captive reports for Gephyrochromis moorii describe broods of 50 or more — figures offered here as genus-typical context rather than a confirmed count for "Patricki Minos."
In the aquarium
Gephyrochromis sp. "Patricki Minos" is a rare, specialist find rather than a mainstream aquarium fish; even the two formally described Gephyrochromis species circulate mainly through specialist Malawi cichlid circles rather than ordinary fish shops, and an undescribed form from a single Mozambican reef is scarcer still. A keeper who did obtain it should replicate the genus's sand-associated habitat: a generous open sand floor with only modest rockwork for shelter rather than a solid rock wall, and the lake's standard hard, alkaline water chemistry, roughly 75–82 °F and pH 7.7-8.6. Given the genus's mixed feeding habits, a varied diet combining spirulina-based flake with occasional small invertebrate foods is a reasonable starting point. No species-specific husbandry record exists for this form, and general Gephyrochromis practice is offered here only as a starting point, not a confirmed protocol.
Conservation
Gephyrochromis sp. "Patricki Minos" has no IUCN Red List assessment, since formal evaluation requires a validly published scientific name and none exists for this form. The genus's two described relatives are both assessed Least Concern, but that status cannot be extended to this undescribed population. As a sand-associated cichlid apparently restricted to a single reef on the Mozambican shore, it shares the general exposures documented across Lake Malawi's inshore cichlid fauna — sedimentation from catchment disturbance, incidental beach-seine bycatch, and the ornamental collecting that targets narrow-range Malawi endemics — but no population-specific data exist to characterise its status beyond that general context.
