Taxonomy & naming
Gephyrochromis sp. "Sand" is an informal designation; it has no describing author, no publication date, and no listing under a validated name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The name follows the standard undescribed-cichlid convention — genus, "sp.", and a descriptive trade name, here referencing the form's association with open or sandy substrate rather than the purely rocky habitat of its closest described relatives. The genus Gephyrochromis was erected by Boulenger in 1901 and today holds just two validly described species, G. moorii and G. lawsi, both known from the northern part of the lake; it is one of the smallest and most sparsely documented cichlid genera in Lake Malawi, and most field observations attributed to it are informal notes rather than published taxonomic work. Gephyrochromis sp. "Sand" is recorded from the far south-eastern arm of the lake, on both the Tanzanian and Mozambican shores — a considerable distance from the northern range of the described species — which fits a pattern seen across many Malawi cichlid genera, where a formally described species from one part of the lake is echoed by undescribed, geographically distinct relatives elsewhere. No formal study has established how closely this form relates to G. moorii or G. lawsi, or confirmed its placement within Gephyrochromis beyond field identification.
Morphology
Detailed morphometric data have not been published for Gephyrochromis sp. "Sand". The genus as a whole comprises slender, moderately elongate mbuna-like cichlids, smaller-mouthed than the robust rock-scraping genera such as Petrotilapia, and it is reasonable to expect the same general body plan in this form. Genus-typical size for Gephyrochromis is modest, in the range of most small-to-medium mbuna, roughly 3.5–4.5 in; no validated maximum length exists specifically for this form. Its trade name suggests a paler, sand-toned coloration distinguishing it from the darker rock-dwelling species in the genus, though the extent of that colour pattern — and how strongly it differs between males and females — has not been documented in the accessible literature. Sexual dichromatism should be assumed on general Malawi cichlid grounds, with breeding males more strongly coloured than females, but the specific pattern for this form is not established and should not be guessed at further than that.
Habitat
The form is known from three localities clustered in the far south-eastern arm of Lake Malawi, near the point where the Tanzanian and Mozambican shorelines meet: Undu Reef on the Tanzanian side, and Londo Bay and Wikihi on the Mozambican coast. This stretch of shoreline sits well outside the range documented for the two formally described Gephyrochromis species in the northern lake, making the south-eastern arm population geographically — and probably reproductively — distinct. As its trade name implies, the habitat likely includes sand or sand-adjacent substrate rather than the purely rocky habitat typical of its congeners, though the precise biotope — depth range, substrate composition, and degree of rock association — has not been formally surveyed and described. The surrounding water follows the general Lake Malawi profile: warm, hard, and alkaline.
Feeding
No specific feeding study has been published for Gephyrochromis sp. "Sand". The described Gephyrochromis species are algae-grazing mbuna-type cichlids, taking aufwuchs from rock surfaces with a relatively small, terminal mouth, and a similar diet — algae and associated micro-invertebrates picked from hard or sandy substrate — is the reasonable expectation for this form given its placement in the genus. Its association with sand rather than pure rock, implied by the trade name, may mean it forages more broadly across mixed substrate than the purely rock-bound described species, picking loose algae and detritus from sand-swept rock edges rather than grazing dense algal turf. This remains an inference from habitat and genus, not a documented observation.
Mating
Breeding behaviour in Gephyrochromis sp. "Sand" has not been described. By analogy with other small Lake Malawi mbuna and mbuna-adjacent cichlids, males are expected to hold modest territories on the reef or over adjacent substrate and to court passing females in full breeding colour, without building any nest. Even the two formally described Gephyrochromis species remain poorly studied behaviourally, reflecting how little dedicated fieldwork this small genus has received compared with better-known mbuna genera such as Maylandia or Tropheops.
Breeding
As with every Lake Malawi haplochromine cichlid, Gephyrochromis sp. "Sand" is understood to be a maternal mouthbrooder: the female collects the fertilised eggs in her mouth and carries them, without feeding normally, until the fry are ready for independent life, with the male taking no further role once spawning is complete. Clutch size, brooding duration, and the age or size at first release have not been documented for this form, and given how little has been published on the genus generally, even the two formally described Gephyrochromis species are not comprehensively documented on these points. The safest statement is the genus-level one: maternal mouthbrooding, no biparental care, and modest fecundity typical of small Malawi cichlids.
In the aquarium
Gephyrochromis sp. "Sand" is a rare fish in the aquarium trade, collected only occasionally from a remote stretch of the lake's south-eastern shore, and most keepers will never encounter it. Where it does appear, it should be housed as a general Lake Malawi rock-and-sand cichlid: a tank of at least 47 in with a sand substrate and enough rockwork to provide broken sightlines and retreats, since even a sand-associated species benefits from cover. Water should replicate the lake's rocky-zone chemistry — hard, alkaline (pH roughly 7.7–8.6), and warm (75–82 °F) — and should never be allowed to soften or acidify for any extended period, a well-known stressor for Malawi cichlids. Diet should follow the general mbuna template, weighted toward vegetable matter — spirulina-based flake or pellet — with occasional small live or frozen invertebrates, and fatty foods kept to a minimum given the group's susceptibility to digestive bloat. Because so little is documented about this specific form's temperament, a cautious approach — observing behaviour before assuming it will match either the calmer or the more pugnacious end of the mbuna spectrum — is warranted.
Conservation
Gephyrochromis sp. "Sand" has not been assessed by the IUCN, and as an undescribed form it has no Red List status of any kind. What can be said is that it is known from only a small number of localities in the far south-eastern arm of the lake, spanning the Tanzania–Mozambique border, an area that is comparatively remote and less intensively surveyed than the well-studied southern and central Malawi shoreline. That remoteness cuts both ways: it may mean the form faces less collection pressure than more accessible mbuna, but it also means less is known about its true range, population size, or any threats it might face. In the absence of a formal assessment, the appropriate stance is caution rather than either alarm or reassurance.
