Labidochromis sp. "Caeruleus Jalo" has no authority, no year of description, and no FishBase entry. It circulates under this informal field name, combining a reference to Labidochromis caeruleus with its collection locality, Jalo Reef, following the standard convention for undescribed Malawi cichlids. Labidochromis caeruleus was described by Geoffrey Fryer in 1956 from bluish-white specimens at Nkhata Bay and is now known to splinter across the northern half of the lake into a patchwork of colour forms — white, blue-barred, and, in one narrow stretch of coast, bright yellow — all currently treated as a single variable species pending molecular confirmation. Rather than being folded into that species, the Jalo Reef population is kept apart under its own field name, and should be treated as an unresolved population rather than assumed to be Labidochromis caeruleus outright.
Morphology
Labidochromis caeruleus is a small mbuna, with FishBase recording a maximum of about 3 in standard length and Konings giving wild adults at roughly 4 in total length, built with the genus's diagnostic acute, beak-like snout and forceps-shaped outer teeth. No detailed published colour description exists for the Jalo Reef population specifically; unlike some other named populations in the complex, this trade name carries no colour descriptor of its own, so this account does not guess at whether the fish runs white, blue-barred, brown or otherwise. Sexual dimorphism in Labidochromis caeruleus is generally weak in the wild, with the sexes told apart chiefly by the genital papilla rather than by colour; whether that holds here has not been separately documented.
Habitat
This form is recorded from Jalo Reef, on the Malawian shore of Lake Malawi. Most Labidochromis are extreme local endemics tied to one or a few adjacent reefs; Labidochromis caeruleus is an exception, ranging unusually widely across the northern half of the lake and spanning Malawi, Mozambique and Tanzania. Within rock habitat the species keeps to caves and crevices, typically from about 3–66 ft deep, with some populations reported to at least 164 ft. Water conditions follow Lake Malawi's typical hard, alkaline inshore chemistry. No depth or micro-habitat figure specific to the Jalo Reef population has been separately published.
Feeding
Labidochromis caeruleus is an insectivore built for the job: rather than rasping algae from rock, it uses its narrow, forceps-like front teeth to probe small cracks and crevices, plucking out small crustaceans, aquatic insects and their larvae that bulkier-mouthed competitors cannot reach. No feeding study exists for the Jalo Reef population specifically, so its diet is presented here as complex-typical crevice-picking insectivory rather than a documented fact for this exact form.
Mating
For an mbuna, Labidochromis caeruleus is conspicuously mild: males typically defend only a small cave among the rocks rather than a large territory, and spawning happens opportunistically wherever a male and ripe female meet, with little strong nuptial colour change to advertise readiness since the sexes look alike in the wild. Whether the Jalo Reef population follows this same low-key pattern, and any courtship detail specific to it, have not been documented.
Breeding
As with every Lake Malawi cichlid, Labidochromis sp. "Caeruleus Jalo" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder: the female takes fertilised eggs into her mouth and incubates them for around three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. Direct wild fecundity for Labidochromis caeruleus is not well published; in the closely comparable Labidochromis sp. "Hongi," aquarium observations recorded broods of roughly 7-18 fry, offered here as complex-typical context rather than a documented count for this population.
In the aquarium
Labidochromis sp. "Caeruleus Jalo" is a rarely traded, locality-specific form; almost all hobbyists keeping "Labidochromis caeruleus" in fact keep the captive-bred yellow Lion's Cove morph sold as Electric Yellow, and a reef-specific Malawian population like this one circulates, if at all, only through specialist collectors. A keeper who did obtain it should follow the same standard Labidochromis caeruleus template: a rocky-reef setup of at least 35.5–47 in with abundant caves, hard alkaline water at roughly pH 7.8-8.6 and 72–82 °F, and a diet built around spirulina-enriched flake supplemented with small meaty foods a few times a week, avoiding the excess animal protein that predisposes mbuna to Malawi bloat. No species-specific husbandry record exists for this exact form.
Conservation
Labidochromis sp. "Caeruleus Jalo" has no IUCN Red List assessment, since a valid scientific name is required before formal evaluation and none has been published for this form. Labidochromis caeruleus is assessed Least Concern lake-wide, reflecting its broad distribution and the fact that hobby demand is met overwhelmingly by captive breeding rather than wild collection, but that status describes the species as a whole and cannot be extended automatically to an unresolved, locality-specific population. As a rock-associated cichlid from the Malawian shore, it shares the general exposures documented across Lake Malawi's inshore endemics — sedimentation and localised habitat pressure — but no population-specific data exist to characterise its status further.
