Labidochromis sp. "Mbamba" has never been formally described: it has no authority, no year of publication, and no FishBase entry. It is known only by the informal trade name "Mbamba", taken directly from Mbamba Bay, its principal recorded locality on the Tanzanian shore, following the standard convention of naming undescribed Malawi cichlids for genus, "sp.", and a descriptive or geographic tag in quotation marks. Labidochromis is a genus of some three dozen recognised species and a considerable number of additional undescribed trade forms, many of them named — like this one — for the reef or bay where they were first collected. No depth or micro-habitat data specific to this form have been published, so the ranges given here reflect the genus-typical rocky-reef envelope rather than a documented figure for "Mbamba" itself.
Feeding
Because Labidochromis spans both algae-grazing and invertebrate-picking feeding modes depending on species, and no dedicated study exists for "Mbamba", its exact diet cannot be stated with confidence. A keeper who did obtain it should provide the standard rocky-reef Lake Malawi setup: a substantial rockwork structure with caves and crevices, fine sand substrate, and hard, alkaline water in the range of roughly 75–82 °F and pH 7.7–8.6. Given the genus's mixed feeding strategies, a varied diet offering both plant-based flake and small meaty foods is a sensible default until more is known about this form's specific needs. No species-specific husbandry record for "Mbamba" exists, and general Labidochromis and mbuna practice is offered here only as a reasonable starting point.
