Taxonomy & naming
Lethrinops sp. "Longimanus Likoma" is an informal designation with no describing author, no publication date, and no entry under a validated name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The trade name follows the standard convention for undescribed cichlids close to a known species: the genus, a reference to the described relative it most resembles — Lethrinops longimanus (Trewavas, 1931) — and a locality qualifier, here Likoma Island, distinguishing this population from the nominal form and from other longimanus-type populations recorded elsewhere in the lake. Lethrinops longimanus itself is named for the elongated pelvic fins ("long hand") that breeding males develop, a signature ornament of the species complex. The genus Lethrinops (Regan, 1922) is a large assemblage of sand-dwelling haplochromines, most named for a superficial resemblance in snout and lip shape to the marine emperor breams of the genus Lethrinus. Whether the Likoma population represents a true population of L. longimanus, a closely related sibling species, or simply a locally distinctive colour form has not been resolved by any published study, and it should be treated as a distinct, unnamed entity pending that work.
Morphology
Detailed morphometrics specific to the Likoma population have not been published, but the longimanus complex is well characterised in the field literature. Breeding males develop notably elongated pelvic fins — trailing well past the anal fin in mature individuals — a rare ornament among Lethrinops and one used in visual display during courtship. The body is the moderately elongate, laterally compressed form typical of sand-dwelling Lethrinops, with a somewhat pointed snout suited to picking food from soft substrate. Genus-typical size for the longimanus group runs to roughly 4.5–5 in total length, with males somewhat larger than females. Breeding males show the vivid dichromatism typical of Lethrinops leks — blue-toned bodies, often with a yellow or orange dorsal edge — while females and non-breeding males remain silvery and cryptically countershaded, blending against open sand.
Habitat
The form is recorded from a short stretch of lake bed around Likoma Island, in the eastern-central part of Lake Malawi: Mala Point, Masimbwe Island, and Mbako Point. This is open, sandy lake floor rather than rocky shoreline, the characteristic habitat of Lethrinops generally, typically at moderate depths of roughly 33–98 ft where sand-dwelling haplochromines forage and, in season, males construct their breeding structures. The surrounding water is warm, hard, and alkaline, consistent with Lake Malawi throughout, though sand habitats can be somewhat cooler and less turbulent than the wave-exposed rocky shore favoured by mbuna.
Feeding
Lethrinops species are sand-sifters, taking small invertebrates — chironomid larvae, ostracods, and other benthic organisms — from within the top layer of soft substrate, typically by taking a mouthful of sand, filtering out food items, and expelling the rest through the gills. The elongate, somewhat pointed snout characteristic of the longimanus group is consistent with this feeding style. Lethrinops sp. "Longimanus Likoma" is expected to feed in the same manner as its close relatives, foraging over open sand rather than grazing rock, though no specific dietary study has been published for the Likoma population itself.
Mating
Breeding males in the longimanus complex are lek breeders, constructing bower-like sand structures — shallow pits or small mounds, depending on the species and population — on open sand flats, where they display to visiting females using their elongated pelvic fins as a visual signal. Neighbouring males typically hold adjacent territories within a loose lek, and females move between them to select a mate before spawning. This general pattern is documented for Lethrinops longimanus and related forms; the Likoma population has not been the subject of a dedicated behavioural study, but nothing suggests it departs from the pattern typical of its complex.
Breeding
As in all Lake Malawi haplochromines, reproduction is by maternal mouthbrooding. Following courtship at the male's sand structure, the female collects the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them there, without normal feeding, until the fry are developed enough for independent release; the male takes no further part after spawning. Clutch sizes in Lethrinops are generally modest, and brooding runs several weeks, broadly in line with other Malawi sand-dwellers, though exact figures for the Likoma population have not been documented. Brooding females typically leave the open sand flats used for lekking and retreat to quieter water, reducing both feeding activity and exposure while carrying the brood. In better-studied Lethrinops species clutch sizes generally run from a few dozen to around a hundred eggs depending on female size, and brooding periods of three to four weeks are typical; these figures are offered as a genus-level guide rather than a confirmed measurement for the Likoma population itself.
In the aquarium
Lethrinops sp. "Longimanus Likoma" appears only occasionally in the trade, generally through specialist Malawi cichlid importers rather than general retail. Because it is a sand-dweller, a tank intended for it should provide a soft sand substrate at least several centimetres deep, allowing natural sifting behaviour, along with open swimming space rather than the dense rockwork used for mbuna. Water should be hard and alkaline, matching Lake Malawi's profile (pH roughly 7.7–8.6, 75–82 °F). Lethrinops species are generally less aggressive than rock-dwelling mbuna and do best in a species tank or alongside other calm, sand-associated Malawi cichlids rather than mixed in with pugnacious mbuna, which can outcompete and harass them. Diet should include sinking pellets and small live or frozen invertebrates such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, reflecting the natural sand-sifted diet; fatty foods should be limited as with all Malawi cichlids.
Conservation
Lethrinops sp. "Longimanus Likoma" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, carries no Red List status. Its documented range is limited to a short stretch of lake bed around Likoma Island, and while sand habitat around larger islands is not unusually rare in Lake Malawi, a population known from only a few nearby points warrants the same caution applied to any narrow-range Malawi endemic — vulnerability to concentrated collection pressure or local habitat change, even absent a specific documented threat. More broadly, the genus Lethrinops includes a number of formally described species that have themselves been assessed by the IUCN, several as threatened, owing largely to pressure from the lake's commercial trawl fisheries and to siltation and habitat degradation along parts of the shoreline — a reminder that sand-dwelling Malawi cichlids as a group face different, and in places more severe, pressures than the aquarium-focused concerns typically raised for rock-dwelling mbuna.
