Lethrinops microstoma belongs to the genus Lethrinops, erected by Charles Tate Regan in his 1922 revision of the cichlid fishes of Lake Nyasa (the lake's older name). Regan coined the genus name for a resemblance he saw between its type species and the marine emperor breams of the genus Lethrinus, combining that root with the Greek ops ("face" or "appearance"). Lethrinops now comprises roughly two dozen formally described species, most originally described by Regan himself or by Ethelwynn Trewavas in her comprehensive 1931 synopsis of the lake's cichlids, plus many undescribed forms — all sediment-sifting cichlids endemic to the Lake Malawi system. The precise original description and year for Lethrinops microstoma specifically have not been confirmed against a primary source for this article, so no formal describing authority is asserted here. The epithet microstoma is straightforward Greek — mikros ("small") and stoma ("mouth") — naming the fish for its diagnostically small mouth.
Morphology
As its name indicates, Lethrinops microstoma is distinguished from its many congeners chiefly by an unusually small mouth, a feature that in this sand-sifting genus typically correlates with a diet of very fine particles rather than larger buried invertebrates. In build it is expected to share the genus's moderately elongate, laterally compressed body, adapted for working the substrate rather than grazing rock or hunting in open water. Like other Lethrinops it is likely seasonally dimorphic, with breeding males developing brighter, more saturated colour and females and non-breeding fish remaining plain and silvery, though detailed colour description specific to this species has not been documented here.
Habitat
Lethrinops microstoma is documented from two sites at opposite ends of Lake Malawi: Border, near the lake's southern limit close to the Mozambique frontier, and Manda, far to the north near the Tanzanian shore. That spread suggests a species — or a set of closely related populations — with a considerable north-south range rather than one confined to a single locality, though whether the two records represent a single continuously distributed species or geographically separated forms has not been established here. Feeding
Like other members of its genus, Lethrinops microstoma is a benthic, sand-sifting invertivore, mining the substrate for food rather than grazing rock or chasing prey in open water. The genus's characteristic feeding method is to drop the protrusible mouth to the sand, take in a mouthful, and sort the edible fraction across the gill rakers while expelling clean sand through the gill openings. The unusually small mouth that gives this species its name likely restricts it to picking very fine food items — small invertebrates, organic detritus, and similar material — rather than the somewhat larger buried prey some larger-mouthed Lethrinops can take, a specialisation that helps this diverse genus partition the lake's sandy floor among many coexisting species.
Mating

Reproduction in Lethrinops microstoma has not been documented directly, but almost certainly follows the maternal-mouthbrooding pattern universal to Lake Malawi's haplochromine cichlids. After spawning on the male's territory, the female would take the fertilised eggs into her mouth, incubating them and the developing larvae for roughly three weeks without feeding, before releasing free-swimming fry; the male provides no parental care beyond his role at spawning. Clutch size has not been documented for this species, but given its small mouth and presumably modest body size, a small brood — on the order of a few dozen eggs at most — would be consistent with similarly sized congeners.
In the aquarium
Lethrinops microstoma is not an established aquarium fish, and no dedicated keeping literature exists for it specifically; any husbandry notes here follow the general template for sand-dwelling Lethrinops. Such a fish would need a large tank with a deep bed of fine sand across the whole footprint, allowing it to drive its jaws into the substrate and sift naturally — coarse gravel would be unsuitable and potentially harmful. Water chemistry should match the lake: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, maintained with strong filtration and stability, since fluctuating chemistry is strongly implicated in the digestive illness hobbyists call Malawi bloat. Given its unusually small mouth, fine sinking foods — crushed flake, small frozen foods it can sort from the sand — would likely suit it better than larger pellets. Suitable tankmates would be other peaceful, similarly sized Malawi sand-dwellers rather than aggressive mbuna.
