Melanochromis heterochromis belongs to Melanochromis, a genus of elongated mbuna distinguished from most other rock-dwelling Lake Malawi cichlids by its horizontally striped rather than vertically barred colour pattern, and by a diet that leans more toward insectivory and general omnivory than the strict algae-grazing typical of Maylandia, Tropheops and Pseudotropheus. Habitat
This species is documented from a cluster of localities in the southern part of Lake Malawi, including Chinyamwezi Island, Chinyankwazi Island, Luwala Reef, Mbenji Island, Mumbo Island, Nakantenga Island, Three Peaks Reef and Zimbawe Rock — broadly the island- and reef-studded waters off the southern arm of the lake, an area well known for its dense concentration of rocky mbuna habitat. Like other Melanochromis it is expected to occupy rocky and rock-sand transition shoreline, foraging both on rock surfaces and, more than most mbuna, in the open water and crevices where small invertebrates can be found. The water across this range is Lake Malawi's characteristic hard, alkaline medium.
Feeding
Melanochromis as a genus is somewhat more omnivorous than the strict algae-grazing mbuna it superficially resembles: alongside aufwuchs grazed from rock surfaces, many species take a meaningfully larger share of small invertebrates, insect larvae and other animal matter than typical Pseudotropheus or Maylandia. M. heterochromis is expected to share this mixed feeding strategy, foraging over rock and rubble for both algae and invertebrate prey rather than specialising narrowly in either. This dietary flexibility is one of the practical reasons Melanochromis species are often noted in the hobby as being somewhat more prone to boldness and opportunistic feeding — including, in some species, predation on the fry of tankmates — than the more strictly herbivorous mbuna.
Mating
As in other mbuna, male Melanochromis establish and defend cave or crevice territories among the rocks and display from them to attract females while driving off rival males; the mating system is polygynous rather than pair-bonded. Melanochromis heterochromis is a maternal mouthbrooder, as is every species in its genus. Melanochromis heterochromis is uncommon in the hobby; specific captive husbandry information is limited. Where kept, its care would follow the general Melanochromis template, which places a premium on managing aggression: this genus has a reputation among mbuna keepers for being unusually pugnacious, so a long aquarium of at least 47 in with dense rockwork offering abundant caves and broken sightlines is essential, and stocking density should lean toward more fish rather than fewer to disperse aggression across the group. Water chemistry should replicate the lake — hard and strongly alkaline, pH roughly 7.7 to 8.6, temperature in the mid-20s Celsius. Given the genus's somewhat more omnivorous natural diet, a varied regimen combining a spirulina-based staple with modest, regular servings of small invertebrate foods such as daphnia or brine shrimp is appropriate, avoiding the fatty, protein-heavy foods that predispose Malawi cichlids generally to bloat. A single male with several females is the standard low-conflict arrangement, and this species, like all mbuna, should not be mixed with similar-looking congeners to avoid hybridisation.
Conservation
