Hard, alkaline, well-buffered water of the kind that defines Lake Malawi — stability matters more than chasing a single number.

Build the hardscape first: stacked rock with caves, crevices and sight-lines breaks up territories the way a rocky shoreline does in the wild. Open swimming room, bright light and strong, well-oxygenated flow round it out. A fine sand bed reads as natural and is kind to digging mouths.

The genus is notable for often unusual sexual dichromatism — in several Melanochromis species, males and females carry markedly different, sometimes even inverted, striping patterns rather than a simple bright-male/dull-female contrast — though the specific coloration of this species is not confidently documented here, and keepers should rely on verified photographs of known-locality specimens rather than assumption.

Habitat

The species is documented from sites including Chilucha Reef, Metangula, Minos Reef, and Nkolongwe, all situated along the eastern shore of Lake Malawi within or near Mozambican waters — Metangula in particular is a well-known lakeside town on that coast. Like other Melanochromis, it is a rock-associated species, occupying the boulder-strewn littoral zone typical of mbuna habitat rather than open sand. Water conditions follow the lake's usual profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, well oxygenated in the shallow rocky zone this genus favours.

Feeding

Melanochromis species are broadly omnivorous grazers, feeding on the algal turf coating rock surfaces while also opportunistically taking small invertebrates living within that turf. A single male with several females is the standard low-stress ratio, and tankmates should be similarly robust Malawi cichlids rather than timid species.
