Habitat
This species is documented from a cluster of localities on Lake Malawi's central-western and central shore, including Gome, Chiofu, Masinje and Ntekete toward the south, and Lumessi and Nkhungu Point further north — broadly the stretch of coastline near and south of the Nkhotakota area. Like other Melanochromis, it is expected to occupy rocky and rock-sand transition shoreline. The water across this range is Lake Malawi's characteristic hard, alkaline medium.
Feeding
As in other Melanochromis, M. simulans is expected to combine aufwuchs grazing with a meaningful share of invertebrate feeding, foraging over rock and rubble surfaces for algae, diatoms and small animal prey rather than specialising narrowly in either. This mixed feeding strategy is characteristic of the genus and distinguishes it somewhat from the more strictly herbivorous mbuna genera such as Maylandia and Tropheops. No species-specific dietary study has been documented for M. simulans beyond this genus-typical pattern.
Mating
As in other mbuna, male Melanochromis establish and defend cave or crevice territories among the rocks and display from them to attract females while driving off rival males, in a polygynous mating system without pair bonding. Melanochromis simulans is a maternal mouthbrooder, as is every species in its genus. Melanochromis simulans is uncommon in the hobby, and specific captive husbandry information is limited. Where kept, its care would follow the general Melanochromis template, which places a premium on managing aggression: this genus is known among mbuna keepers for pronounced territoriality, so a long aquarium of at least 47 in with dense rockwork offering abundant caves and broken sightlines is important. Water chemistry should replicate the lake — hard and strongly alkaline, pH roughly 7.7 to 8.6, temperature in the mid-20s Celsius. A varied diet combining a spirulina-based staple with modest servings of small invertebrate foods such as daphnia or brine shrimp suits the genus's mixed feeding habits. A single male with several females is the standard low-conflict arrangement, and given its species name references close resemblance to a congener, this fish should be kept apart from similar-looking Melanochromis to avoid identification confusion and possible hybridisation.
Conservation
Melanochromis simulans has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List, so no formal conservation status can be reported here.
