Placidochromis sp. "Jalo" has no describing author, no type specimen, and no listing in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. Unlike many Placidochromis trade names, which pair a described species' epithet with a locality or colour qualifier, this one is simply the collection point itself: Jalo Reef, a submerged reef in the north-central part of Lake Malawi. Morphology

The body is expected to follow the standard Placidochromis outline — moderately elongate and laterally compressed — with genus-typical size running roughly 4.5–6 in total length, males larger than females at maturity, as is typical across the genus. Habitat
Jalo Reef is a submerged reef structure in the north-central part of Lake Malawi, a setting that generally supports a rocky, current-swept community distinct from sheltered mainland shallows. Placidochromis species in general favour the sand-rock interface or open sand rather than deep within dense rock cover, in contrast to the mbuna that dominate the rockiest zones of such reefs, and this form is presumed to occupy similar transitional habitat, though no dedicated survey specific to this population has been published.
Feeding

Across the genus, Placidochromis species typically forage at the sand-rock interface, picking small invertebrates disturbed from the substrate or exposed on rock surfaces rather than grazing algal turf as mbuna do on the surrounding reef structure. Some genus members follow larger sand-sifting species to intercept prey stirred up by their digging, while a smaller number, such as the weed-associated P. longimanus, lean more herbivorous. Mating

Breeding
Reproduction is expected to be by maternal mouthbrooding, the near-universal mode across Lake Malawi's cichlid flock: the female alone incubates the fertilised eggs and subsequent fry in her mouth for several weeks, without normal feeding, before releasing free-swimming young with no further parental role for the male. A tank of at least 47 in with sand substrate, moderate rockwork at the margins, and open swimming space would suit a Placidochromis of this general size and presumed sand-rock ecology. Water chemistry should follow the Lake Malawi standard — hard and alkaline, pH roughly 7.7–8.6, temperature 75–82 °F. Most non-mbuna Placidochromis are comparatively calm by Malawi cichlid standards and are commonly kept as one male with several females among other peaceful haps, though this is a general expectation rather than a documented account for this specific population.
Conservation
Placidochromis sp. "Jalo" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, carries no Red List status. Any population confined to a single named reef carries the general exposure of narrow-range Malawi rock- and sand-dwellers to localised ornamental collection and habitat disturbance, a concern that applies to this form absent a formal assessment.
