Taxonomy & naming
Placidochromis sp. "White-orange Dorsal" is an informal, undescribed taxon: it has no describing author, no year of publication, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. Placidochromis itself is, in the words of the Cichlid Room Companion, "a catch-all genus, convenient at the moment but which is destined for being subdivided in the future," and a large share of its most familiar aquarium fish — the phenochilus forms, "Electra Blue," and this one — circulate under provisional trade names rather than published binomials. The tag "White-orange Dorsal" follows the usual convention for such forms: no locality or resemblance claim, just the trait that field workers and collectors actually used to recognize it at the point of capture. It has not been linked in the literature available to us to any specific described Placidochromis, though its general body plan places it with the electra/johnstoni-type sand-associated haps rather than the deep-water Hanssens (2004) species group.
Morphology
This form carries the generalized Placidochromis body plan: an oval, laterally compressed profile, a moderate mouth with isognathous to slightly snout-down jaws, and fine dentition suited to picking rather than scraping or crushing prey — none of the specializations seen in the mbuna, the piscivorous Tyrannochromis-type haps, or the sand-plough Lethrinops. The feature that gives the form its name is the dorsal fin of breeding males: white along the leading portion, shading into orange toward the rear and trailing edge, a two-tone marking distinct enough that collectors use it as a field character in preference to overall body colour. Ground body colour has not been documented in detail beyond that; females and non-breeding males are presumed, by genus pattern, to run considerably drabber and greyer than colored-up males.
Habitat
The only locality on record for this form is Nkhata Bay, a large embayment on Lake Malawi's north-central Malawian shore and one of the lake's better-studied stretches of coast, known for a dense mosaic of rock outcrops, sand flats, and the intermediate rock-sand transition zone that many non-mbuna haps favour. No depth or micro-habitat record specific to this population has been published, so the ranges given here follow the genus-typical envelope for sand and intermediate-zone Placidochromis. Water conditions match Lake Malawi's standard littoral profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, with the high clarity typical of the lake's northern basin.
Feeding
Placidochromis as a genus is built around micro-invertebrate feeding in and around sand rather than algae grazing or predation on other fish; several well-documented congeners (P. electra chief among them) forage by winnowing a mouthful of substrate for small invertebrates, and some species shadow larger sand-digging cichlids to snap up prey the digger exposes. No feeding study specific to "White-orange Dorsal" has been published, so this account follows the genus-wide pattern rather than direct observation of the Nkhata Bay population itself. Given its recorded habitat at the rock-sand interface, a diet of small benthic invertebrates picked from open sand and settled sediment near rock is the most defensible inference.
Mating
Courtship in this form has not been directly documented, but Placidochromis follows the standard haplochromine pattern closely enough that a confident inference is possible: a dominant, colour-charged male establishes and defends a spot on or near open sand, displaying his dorsal fin — the fin that gives this form its name — to passing females. Placidochromis is generally regarded as one of the calmer genera of Malawi hap by aquarium keepers, without the relentless intraspecific aggression typical of mbuna, though territorial males will still spar with rivals as they mature and establish breeding sites.
Breeding
Placidochromis sp. "White-orange Dorsal" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as is every Placidochromis and essentially every Lake Malawi haplochromine. Following courtship over a sand site, the female is expected to take the fertilised eggs into her mouth and carry them through incubation with no male involvement thereafter. No clutch count has been published for this specific form; documented Placidochromis clutches scale with body size, running from roughly fifty eggs in the smaller P. electra to well over a hundred in the larger P. johnstoni, and this mid-sized form most plausibly falls somewhere in that range, though that is an inference rather than a measured fact.
In the aquarium
This is a niche form, sought mainly by keepers specifically chasing Nkhata Bay provenance rather than a mainstream aquarium staple. Standard Placidochromis husbandry applies: a sand substrate the fish can work rather than coarse gravel, open swimming space alongside rockwork rather than a solid wall of caves, and hard, alkaline water held warm and stable. Placidochromis is generally a good-tempered genus by Malawi standards and mixes reasonably with peacocks and other mild haps, but the usual caveats for undescribed "sp." forms apply in full: it will hybridise readily with other blue-toned Placidochromis and look-alike haps, so keepers intending to maintain a clean line should keep only one such species per tank and be skeptical of unverified provisional labels on purchased stock.
Conservation
Placidochromis sp. "White-orange Dorsal" has no IUCN Red List assessment, because it has never been formally described and has no valid scientific name available to be assessed. That is a statement about its taxonomy, not its population status. Nkhata Bay is a populated, actively fished stretch of Lake Malawi's shore, and like other locality-restricted haps recorded there, this form is exposed to the general pressures affecting the district — artisanal fishing pressure, shoreline development, and sediment runoff — without any dedicated population survey to say how it is actually faring.
