Pseudotropheus sp. "Dwarf Nkhata" is an informal, undescribed taxon: no describing author, no publication date, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The tag follows the standard two-part convention for undescribed mbuna forms — a field trait ("Dwarf," for its reported smaller-than-typical size) paired with the collection locality (Nkhata Bay). No confident relationship to a described Pseudotropheus species has been documented for this form in the sources available to us, and it has not been placed near a particular relative in the published literature; it should be treated strictly as a locality-based, informally recognised population pending any future taxonomic review.
Morphology
This form carries the standard mbuna body plan shared across Pseudotropheus: a moderately elongate, laterally compressed body and the robust, specialised dentition — bicuspid or unicuspid outer teeth over tricuspid inner rows — used across the genus to graze algae from rock. Its trade name flags reduced adult size as the defining field character: collectors report it running smaller than the roughly 3–5 in typical of most Pseudotropheus, though no measured series has been published to confirm exactly how much smaller or at what size it matures. Colour pattern has not been documented in detail for this population.
Habitat
The only locality on record for "Dwarf Nkhata" is Nkhata Bay, a large embayment on Lake Malawi's north-central Malawian shore known for a dense mix of rock outcrops and sand, and for a correspondingly diverse cichlid community. Like other Pseudotropheus, it is expected to hold territory in the shallow-to-intermediate rocky zone rather than open sand or deep water. No depth record specific to this form has been published, so the ranges given here follow the genus-typical envelope. Water conditions match Lake Malawi's standard littoral profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline.
Feeding
As with other Pseudotropheus, this form is expected to be a specialised algae grazer, rasping the aufwuchs mat of filamentous algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria and associated small invertebrates from rock surfaces using the genus's typical dentition. No feeding study specific to this Nkhata Bay population has been published, but this diet is close to universal across rock-dwelling Pseudotropheus and closely related mbuna genera; a smaller-bodied fish, if the "Dwarf" size claim holds, would be expected to hold a proportionally smaller feeding territory than larger congeners.
Mating
Breeding in this genus is polygynous, with territorial males holding rock or crevice sites and displaying to passing females rather than forming lasting pair bonds. A smaller-bodied male, if the "Dwarf" trade-name claim holds for this population, would plausibly defend a smaller territory than the larger-bodied members of the genus, though that inference has not been separately documented. Courtship is expected to follow the standard haplochromine pattern, with the male's anal-fin egg-spots drawing the female to peck and fertilise the clutch already held in her mouth.
Breeding
Pseudotropheus sp. "Dwarf Nkhata" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all Pseudotropheus. The female is expected to take fertilised eggs into her mouth following courtship and carry them through incubation with no male involvement. No clutch data have been published for this form; a genuinely smaller-bodied mbuna typically produces a smaller clutch than larger congeners, so this population, if the size claim holds, would be expected to sit toward the low end of the genus's already modest range of roughly 10 to 30 eggs, though this is inference rather than a documented count.
In the aquarium
"Dwarf Nkhata" would, if its reported small size holds up, be a more space-efficient option than most Pseudotropheus for keepers working with modest tanks, but hard data to plan stocking around has not been published. Standard mbuna husbandry applies regardless of exact adult size: dense rockwork with broken sightlines, hard alkaline water, strong filtration, and a vegetable-leaning, algae-based diet to avoid the bloat risk common in over-fed rift-lake grazers. As with any undescribed "sp." form, keepers should be cautious about unverified trade claims — including the size claim itself — until a proper series of measured specimens is documented.
Conservation
Pseudotropheus sp. "Dwarf Nkhata" has no IUCN Red List assessment, because it has never been formally described and has no valid scientific name available to be assessed. Nkhata Bay is a populated, actively fished stretch of Lake Malawi's shore, and like other locality-restricted mbuna recorded there, this form is exposed to the general pressures affecting the district — artisanal fishing pressure and sediment runoff among them — without any dedicated population survey to characterise its actual status.
