Taxonomy & naming
Pseudotropheus sp. "Socolofi Nkolongwe" is undescribed: no holotype, no publication, no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The trade name pairs "Socolofi" — invoking Chindongo socolofi (Johnson, 1974), the familiar powder-blue pindani cichlid, described from Likoma Island and documented as native along the Mozambican coast roughly between Cobwe and Tumbi Point — with "Nkolongwe", the specific collection point within that same range. Chindongo socolofi itself carried the name Pseudotropheus socolofi for over four decades before Li, Konings and Stauffer's 2016 revision of the Pseudotropheus elongatus group (Zootaxa 4168) moved it to the newly erected genus Chindongo; this Nkolongwe population is still traded under the older Pseudotropheus label, which may simply reflect hobby naming lagging behind the generic revision, or may reflect a genuine, currently undocumented distinction from true Chindongo socolofi. Neither possibility is resolved by any source available here, and this form should be treated as a related but formally unexamined population rather than assumed to be a colour variant of C. socolofi itself.
Morphology
This form follows the compact, laterally compressed mbuna body plan shared with Chindongo socolofi and other Pseudotropheus-group cichlids, with a moderately sloped forehead, protrusible jaws and bicuspid outer teeth suited to grazing aufwuchs. Per its trade name, it is expected to share something of socolofi's signature — a largely uniform, frosted powder-blue body with minimal sexual dichromatism, trimmed with dark fin margins — but the precise colour and markings of the Nkolongwe population have not been independently documented in the sources available here, so no specific pattern is asserted as confirmed. Genus-typical adult length runs roughly 3–4.5 in.
Habitat
Pseudotropheus sp. "Socolofi Nkolongwe" is recorded from Nkolongwe, a site on the Mozambican shore of Lake Malawi that falls within the documented native range of Chindongo socolofi — the coastal stretch running roughly from Cobwe (Cóbuè) to Tumbi Point. This is intermediate habitat: the transition zone where sandy bottom is broken by scattered rocks and boulders, rather than the densely piled rock of strict rock specialists, matching the depth range of roughly 13–49 ft documented for socolofi along this coast. Water chemistry follows the Lake Malawi norm: warm, hard and alkaline, typically 75–82 °F and pH 7.7–8.6.
Feeding
As with Chindongo socolofi and other Pseudotropheus-group mbuna, this form is presumed to be a limnivore that grazes aufwuchs — the mat of algae, diatoms, detritus and associated micro-invertebrates coating rock and sand in the shallows — picking at looser algal strands and small invertebrates over both rock and open sand rather than rasping hard films directly off rock in the manner of the heavy-jawed rock scrapers. No feeding study specific to the Nkolongwe population exists, so this account draws on the documented biology of its presumed close relative rather than direct observation.
Mating
Breeding behaviour is presumed to follow the pattern documented for Chindongo socolofi: a polygynous maternal mouthbrooder with a loose harem structure, in which territorial males stake out a patch of intermediate habitat near a rock or shallow pit and court any ripe females passing through. Socolofi is described by keepers and field accounts as comparatively mild-mannered for a mbuna, though males defend territory and can become genuinely aggressive when spawning. No behavioural documentation specific to "Socolofi Nkolongwe" exists, and this account follows the documented pattern for its presumed close relative rather than direct observation of this population.
Breeding
Pseudotropheus sp. "Socolofi Nkolongwe" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as is standard across the genus and confirmed for Chindongo socolofi. In socolofi, courtship follows the typical T-shaped spawning dance, clutches are modest — on the order of 10–20 eggs — and the female broods for about three weeks before releasing free-swimming fry with no further parental care. No brooding data specific to the Nkolongwe population exists, so these figures should be read as an expectation drawn from a presumed close relative rather than a measurement of this fish.
In the aquarium
Pseudotropheus sp. "Socolofi Nkolongwe" should be kept as a standard intermediate-zone mbuna. A tank of at least 30 US gal works for a small group, though 55 US gal or more gives room to establish territories, combining rockwork for cover and territorial structure with open sand for the fish to range over. Water chemistry should replicate Lake Malawi: 75–82 °F, pH 7.8–8.6, consistently hard and alkaline. Diet should be predominantly vegetable-based — a spirulina-forward flake or pellet as the staple — since high-protein foods are poorly tolerated by algae-grazing mbuna and are strongly implicated in Malawi bloat. If Chindongo socolofi's comparatively mild temperament does carry over to this population, it may mix reasonably with other peaceable rock-and-sand mbuna, but given the taxonomic uncertainty here it should never be housed or bred alongside true Chindongo socolofi, since visual confusion and unintended hybridisation would compromise the provenance of both.
Conservation
No IUCN Red List assessment exists for Pseudotropheus sp. "Socolofi Nkolongwe", and none can while it remains formally undescribed; no status, category or year should be attached to it. Its presumed close relative, Chindongo socolofi, is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, but that status applies to the recognised species as a whole and cannot be extended to this unexamined, single-locality population. As a mbuna apparently restricted to a narrow stretch of Mozambican shore, it carries the general vulnerability shared by narrow-range mbuna around Lake Malawi — dependence on intact intermediate habitat and exposure to localised over-collection — but no population-specific study documents its actual abundance or trend. The accurate statement is that it is unevaluated.
