Sciaenochromis sp. "Psammophilus Broad" is not a formally described species and has no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. It belongs to Sciaenochromis, a genus of predatory Lake Malawi haplochromines erected by David Eccles and Ethelwynn Trewavas in 1989, containing only four valid described species — S. ahli, S. benthicola, S. fryeri and S. psammophilus — alongside roughly a dozen undescribed forms. Sciaenochromis psammophilus itself, the 'electric blue Kande,' was described by Ad Konings in 1993 (Cichlids Yearbook 3), its epithet built from the Greek psammos (sand) and philos (loving), for its habit of hunting over open sand. This Youngs Bay population's trade name pairs that species epithet with "Broad," flagging a deeper or broader body/head than typical S. psammophilus as the character separating it in the field — a population resembling the described sand specialist closely enough to be named alongside it, without being formally identified as conspecific. It has not been matched with confidence to S. psammophilus or any other described species.
Morphology
This form shares the fusiform, relatively large-jawed predatory build typical of Sciaenochromis. Described S. psammophilus males run roughly 5.5–6 in total length, smaller in females, and are known for a bright electric-blue breeding dress. The character separating this Youngs Bay population is a broader body or head profile than that genus-typical, comparatively slender psammophilus build — a distinguishing trait used in the field rather than a formally measured character. Colour has not been documented for this population beyond that structural distinction; this account does not extend the blue coloration of S. psammophilus to this form without direct evidence.
Habitat
Sciaenochromis sp. "Psammophilus Broad" is recorded from Youngs Bay on Lake Malawi; precise coordinates for this record are not available. S. psammophilus, the species this form is associated with, is a sand-transition specialist, documented by Konings hovering roughly a foot above open sand near rock at depths of about 16–98 ft, at localities including Kande Island, Likoma, Mazinzi and Masasa reefs and Senga Bay. This Youngs Bay population plausibly occupies similar sand-adjacent habitat, though this is inference from the trade name's association rather than a confirmed observation. The surrounding water carries Lake Malawi's characteristic hard, alkaline chemistry.
Feeding
As with S. psammophilus and Sciaenochromis generally, this form is presumed to be a piscivore hunting small fish and invertebrates over or near open sand, cruising a short distance above the substrate rather than sifting it directly — a different strategy from the enlarged-pore sand-sifting of Aulonocara peacocks, which detect buried prey with specialised sensory pits along the lower jaw that Sciaenochromis lacks. The genus sits at a high trophic level generally, with S. ahli and S. fryeri both placed around trophic level 4.2 on FishBase, and S. psammophilus is understood to follow a broadly similar predatory pattern adapted to the open sand-transition zone rather than rock cover. No feeding study specific to this broader-bodied Youngs Bay population has been published; this account follows the documented pattern for S. psammophilus rather than direct observation of the form itself.
Mating
Courtship has not been observed directly in this population. By analogy with S. psammophilus, breeding males are presumed to defend a sand-associated territory: Konings documents S. psammophilus males holding a territory roughly 7 ft across, centred on a sand pit dug partly under a rock, or building a shallow open-sand bower where no rock is available — a more assertive, physically constructed territory than the loosely defended ground of the genus's shallow-reef relative S. fryeri, whose males sometimes gather in lek-like clusters with little male-male violence. Courtship itself is expected to follow the standard haplochromine sequence of lateral display and fin-quivering, with the male's anal-fin egg-spots used to lure the female to mouth at his vent, but whether this broader-bodied Youngs Bay form follows the same bower-building pattern documented for S. psammophilus has not been observed.
Breeding
Sciaenochromis sp. "Psammophilus Broad" is treated as a maternal mouthbrooder, consistent with its genus and the wider Lake Malawi haplochromine radiation. Following spawning on or near her mate's sand pit or bower, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them alone; Konings documents a brooding period of roughly three weeks for the closely related S. fryeri before she releases free-swimming fry, with no male or biparental care beyond her own. No clutch-size figures have been published for any Sciaenochromis species, including this population, and fry number and size are expected to scale with the size of the brooding female, following the pattern typical of Malawi haplochromine mouthbrooders generally. This account follows genus-level inference rather than direct observation of this population's own breeding behaviour.
In the aquarium
Sciaenochromis sp. "Psammophilus Broad" is not established in the hobby as a distinct import; true S. psammophilus itself is already an advanced-keeper fish relative to the beginner-friendly S. fryeri, needing a larger footprint (malawi.si recommends around 210 US gal / 71 in minimum for adult S. psammophilus) and an open sand bed for its natural digging and territorial behaviour. Were this Youngs Bay population to reach hobbyists, it would most plausibly be sold loosely as S. psammophilus or an unidentified relative, and its broader build should be treated as a field-identification note rather than a confirmed distinct husbandry profile. No husbandry information specific to this form has been documented.
Conservation
Sciaenochromis sp. "Psammophilus Broad" has not been evaluated by the IUCN. As an undescribed form without a published scientific name it has no Red List category or assessment. S. fryeri and S. ahli, the genus's two assessed described species, are both Least Concern (2018); S. psammophilus has not been separately assessed. As a genus endemic to a single lake, Sciaenochromis as a whole remains exposed to the basin-wide pressures of fishing, sediment and nutrient loading and climate-driven warming documented for Lake Malawi. No conservation status beyond "not assessed" should be attached to this form.
