Taxonomy & naming
Tropheops sp. "Elongatus Metangula" is an informal, undescribed taxon: no authority, no publication date, no entry under a validated name in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. "Elongatus" is used within Tropheops as an informal group label — Latin for "elongated" — for populations with a more slender, less deep-bodied profile than the genus's typical build; it recurs at more than one reef around the lake, each population carrying its own locality suffix, here "Metangula" for the nearby Mozambican town. This shared descriptive label does not imply that the Metangula population and the similarly named Chizumulu form, on the opposite side of the lake, are one another's closest relatives — no genetic or morphological study has tested that, only the shared body shape is documented. As with the Chizumulu form, this Tropheops "elongatus" naming is independent of the unrelated "elongatus" species complex found in other Malawi mbuna genera such as Maylandia.
Morphology
The name signals an elongate, torpedo-like body profile, more slender than the short, deep-bodied form typical of most Tropheops, while retaining the genus's diagnostic steep forehead and downturned, algae-grazing mouth. No published colour description exists specifically for this population, and none is claimed here; the elongate body plan, not any particular colour, is the documented basis for its "elongatus" designation. Size is presumed within the genus-typical range, roughly 3.5–4.5 in TL. Across the genus, the outer jaw carries a row of bicuspid teeth backed by smaller tricuspid teeth further back in the mouth — a two-tier arrangement suited to shearing algal filaments from rock rather than crushing hard prey, and one of the anatomical features used to place any Tropheops population in the genus even before its colour or locality is known.
Habitat
Minos Reef and Nkolongwe sit on the Mozambique shore of Lake Malawi near Metangula, a central-eastern stretch of the lake less intensively surveyed in the hobby literature than the better-known Malawian shore. As with other Tropheops, this population is expected to occupy rocky, wave-washed habitat in the well-lit upper water column, grazing exposed rock rather than open sand. Water chemistry follows the lake's standard profile: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Rocky littoral habitat of this kind is intensely contested among Lake Malawi's many mbuna genera, all competing for the same sunlit algal resource, and fine-grained differences in depth, wave exposure, and rock-face angle between neighbouring reefs are thought to be part of what allows so many closely related forms to coexist without one outcompeting the rest.
Feeding
Tropheops is a genus-wide algae specialist, rasping the algal mat from rock at a near-vertical, head-down angle using its steep, downturned mouth. This elongate-bodied form is presumed to feed the same way, without modification, though no feeding study specific to this population has been published. Feeding-bone studies across the genus (Conith et al. 2020, BMC Evolutionary Biology) show that jaw and pharyngeal shape shift measurably with the depth and angle a population feeds at, evidence that Tropheops as a whole sits under real selective pressure to specialise its grazing posture reef by reef. Aufwuchs itself is not pure algae: it is a mixed mat of diatoms, filamentous algae, cyanobacteria, and the small invertebrates living within it, so even a strict grazer takes in a meaningful amount of animal protein incidentally. Feeding territories in this genus double as spawning sites, which is why males defend them so persistently against both feeding competitors and rival suitors.
Mating
Breeding is presumed to follow the standard Tropheops pattern of territorial, polygynous males displaying from a patch of rock to visiting, non-territorial females. No behavioural account specific to this population exists. Because neighbouring Tropheops populations at different reefs often carry visually distinct male colours despite being difficult to separate by body shape alone, colour is thought to function as a mate-recognition cue that limits hybridisation between look-alike forms — a pattern documented across the mbuna radiation generally and one reason Malawi cichlid taxonomy leans so heavily on live colour photographs from the collection site. Male aggression toward rival Tropheops, including toward similarly coloured intruders of other genera, is a defining feature of life on a crowded reef, and much of a dominant male's energy budget goes into defending his patch of rock rather than foraging widely.
Breeding
Tropheops sp. "Elongatus Metangula" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all Tropheops, with the female carrying eggs in her mouth for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry and no further role for the male. Clutch size has not been documented for this form. Tropheops gracilior, the best-studied species in the genus, is documented brooding for about 25 days, a figure used across the genus as a working benchmark in the absence of species-specific data. The brooding female typically stops feeding almost entirely for most of this period, drawing on stored reserves, and will hold the clutch in her mouth even under stress before finally releasing free-swimming fry that are already capable of independent feeding. Tropheops in general breed readily once established in captivity, which is part of why locality-specific forms have proliferated in the hobby even without formal descriptions to back them.
In the aquarium
This form is rarely seen in the trade, reflecting the more limited collection presence on the Mozambican shore compared with the Malawian side of the lake. Where kept, it follows the standard mbuna template: dense rockwork with broken sightlines, a tank of at least 47 in, and enough females per territorial male to spread aggression. Water should be warm, hard, and strongly alkaline. Diet should be predominantly vegetable-based to avoid the elevated Malawi bloat risk that high-protein feeding causes in grazing mbuna. Keepers wanting a genuine Metangula line should avoid mixing this form with the similarly named but geographically distant Chizumulu "elongatus" population. Fish collected from the Mozambican shore in general reach Western hobbyists through a narrower set of export channels than the much more heavily worked Malawian coast, which is part of why this form and others like it remain uncommon even among dedicated Tropheops specialists.
Conservation
Tropheops sp. "Elongatus Metangula" has no IUCN Red List assessment: it has never been formally described and has no valid scientific name to assess. This reflects its taxonomic status, not its population health. As a mbuna tied to a specific reef system on the Mozambique shore, it faces the general pressures on Lake Malawi's ornamental cichlids, but no dedicated population study exists for this form. More broadly, Lake Malawi itself is under sustained strain: sediment and nutrient runoff from deforested catchments smothers exactly the clean, sunlit rock that aufwuchs-grazing mbuna like Tropheops depend on, and warming surface water is strengthening thermal stratification in ways that reduce the nutrient upwelling supporting the lake's productivity generally. None of this is documented as a specific threat to this particular form, but it is the backdrop against which every rock-restricted, single-lake mbuna population should be read.
