Tropheops sp. "Taiwan" has no formal scientific name, describing author, or Catalog of Fishes entry. It is placed in Tropheops on the standard genus-level anatomical basis — a blunt, steep-headed profile and dense comb-like outer teeth built for grazing algae from rock. The trade name records only the collection site, Taiwanee Reef. Konings' Cichlids Yearbook (vol. 2) notes that the reef's rock-dwelling cichlid fauna includes just one species representing the "tropheops-complex" — the informal Pseudotropheus-era grouping ancestral to today's genus Tropheops — alongside a single representative each of the zebra-complex and the Melanochromis lineage, and two from the elongatus-complex. This form, or a close relative, is presumably that tropheops-complex representative, though the published account does not name it directly, and its precise relationship to other Tropheops in the lake has not been formally assessed.
Morphology
The body follows the standard Tropheops plan: compact and laterally compressed, with a steep forehead and blunt, comb-toothed mouth built for scraping algae from rock. A detailed, independently published colour description specific to this population is not available in the sources consulted for this account. Strong sexual dichromatism is expected as in the rest of the genus, with dominant territorial males carrying the most saturated colour and females and subordinate males remaining comparatively plain.
Habitat
This form is known from Taiwanee Reef, an isolated offshore reef in the central-northern part of Lake Malawi. Konings' Cichlids Yearbook (vol. 2) describes the reef as subject to a heavy current for most of the year, at times too strong to swim against even with fins — a condition few rock-dwelling cichlids at the reef tolerate well. The same account argues that Taiwanee Reef may be the only isolated site in the lake to have supported a continuously viable cichlid population even through the lake's historical low-water stands, when many other rocky habitats would have been cut off entirely from the main basin; a reef that stayed submerged and populated through those episodes would carry old, long-isolated lineages that never had the chance to interbreed with populations elsewhere in the lake. That isolation is offered as one explanation for why the reef's rock-cichlid fauna is unusually species-poor overall — a handful of representatives per major species-complex rather than the dense stacking of forms seen on more accessible shoreline. Water conditions otherwise follow the Lake Malawi standard: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline.
Feeding
As in other Tropheops, this form is expected to graze aufwuchs — the mixed film of algae, diatoms, and small invertebrates on sunlit rock — using the genus's characteristic comb-like outer teeth. The strong, near-constant current documented at Taiwanee Reef likely keeps algal turf well supplied with nutrients and free of fine sediment, conditions generally favourable to epilithic grazers able to hold position against the flow. No feeding study specific to this population has been published; this account follows the well-documented genus pattern.
Mating
No dedicated behavioural study exists for this form. Tropheops generally follow a territorial, lek-like mating system, with dominant males holding small rock territories and displaying breeding colour to attract passing females; there is no lasting pair bond. Holding a stable territory against Taiwanee Reef's strong current is plausibly more demanding than at a sheltered shoreline site, though this has not been documented specifically for this form.
Breeding
Reproduction follows the standard Lake Malawi haplochromine pattern of maternal mouthbrooding. After spawning, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further parental care from the male. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; a modest clutch of a few dozen eggs is a reasonable expectation by analogy with similarly sized Tropheops.
In the aquarium
Tropheops sp. "Taiwan" reaches the hobby only occasionally, generally through specialist importers, and suits an established Tropheops keeper. A rock-dominated tank over fine sand, with distinct rock piles and clear sightline breaks, follows the genus's general requirements; a footprint of at least 47 in suits a harem group of one male to several females. Given the reef's naturally strong current, some keepers replicate a degree of water movement with additional powerhead flow, though this is a matter of preference rather than a documented requirement.
Water should replicate Lake Malawi conditions: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH roughly 7.7 to 8.6, and moderately hard to hard water held stable. Diet should lean vegetable, built around a spirulina-based flake or pellet, with protein-rich foods offered only occasionally to reduce the risk of Malawi bloat. Taiwanee Reef has produced distinct, well-regarded forms in several genera, including the well-known Pseudotropheus saulosi, so keepers should confirm reef provenance with the dealer rather than assume any similarly built Tropheops is this form.
Conservation
Tropheops sp. "Taiwan" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, has no Red List assessment of any kind. Its known range is limited to a single isolated reef, and if the account of Taiwanee Reef as a long-isolated refuge is accurate, this form's entire population may represent a genuinely old, irreplaceable lineage confined to one small site — a combination that would make it unusually vulnerable to any concentrated disturbance or collecting pressure, even though the site's strong current likely deters casual over-collection. No formal conservation status should be assumed pending assessment.
