Tropheops sp. "Mbenji Blue" is an informal trade name without a describing author, publication year, or Catalog of Fishes entry. It sits in Tropheops on the standard genus-level anatomical basis — a blunt, steep-headed profile and dense comb-like outer teeth used for scraping algae from rock. The name combines a colour descriptor, "Blue," for the dominant male's body colour, with "Mbenji," the island in west-central Lake Malawi where it is collected. Mbenji Island has yielded distinct trade forms in several other genera, including Copadichromis sp. "Mbenji Blue" among the open-water utaka, a naming coincidence that reflects the island's general tendency to produce locally distinct populations rather than any close relationship between the two. This form's taxonomic relationship to other Tropheops in the region has not been formally studied.
Morphology
The body follows the standard Tropheops plan: compact and laterally compressed, with a steep forehead and blunt, comb-toothed mouth built for grazing rock surfaces. As the trade name indicates, dominant males develop a blue body colour; the precise shade, pattern, and any secondary markings have not been documented in independently published detail available to this account. Strong sexual dichromatism is expected as in the rest of the genus, with females and subordinate males carrying a plainer, less saturated pattern than fully coloured territorial males. Size is expected to fall within the typical range for the genus, roughly 3.5–4.5 in total length in mature males.
Habitat
This form is documented from Mbenji Island, an island offshore in west-central Lake Malawi, surrounded by a mix of rock and sand habitat. Mbenji sits some distance from the mainland, and that degree of isolation — a recurring theme among Lake Malawi's offshore islands — has produced several locally distinct colour forms across multiple cichlid genera collected there, of which this Tropheops population is one. As in other members of the genus, it is expected to occupy sediment-free rocky habitat in the shallow-to-intermediate zone, where wave action keeps algal turf productive. Water conditions follow the Lake Malawi norm: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline.
Feeding
As in other Tropheops, this form is expected to graze aufwuchs — the mixed film of algae, diatoms, and small invertebrates on sunlit rock — using the genus's characteristic comb-like outer teeth. Feeding activity and territorial defence of productive grazing patches are expected to concentrate in the same shallow, wave-exposed rock also used for breeding, following the pattern documented across the genus. No feeding study specific to this population has been published.
Mating
No dedicated behavioural study exists for this form. Tropheops generally follow a territorial, lek-like mating system, with dominant males holding small rock territories and displaying breeding colour to attract passing females; there is no lasting pair bond. Males are expected to carry egg-spot markings on the anal fin, a feature that plays a role in courtship across Lake Malawi's maternal mouthbrooders generally, though this has not been documented specifically for this form.
Breeding
Reproduction follows the standard Lake Malawi haplochromine pattern of maternal mouthbrooding. After spawning, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and broods them for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry, with no further parental care from the male. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; a modest clutch of a few dozen eggs is a reasonable expectation by analogy with similarly sized Tropheops.
In the aquarium
Tropheops sp. "Mbenji Blue" is kept in the standard mbuna setup: a rock-dominated tank over fine sand, with distinct rock piles and clear sightline breaks so a dominant male cannot monopolise the whole tank. A footprint of at least 47 in suits a harem group of one male to several females.
Water should replicate Lake Malawi conditions: temperature in the mid-20s Celsius, pH roughly 7.7 to 8.6, and moderately hard to hard water held stable. Diet should lean vegetable, built around a spirulina-based flake or pellet, with protein-rich foods offered only occasionally to reduce the risk of Malawi bloat. Because "blue" is a commonly reused colour descriptor across many Malawi cichlid trade forms, including at least one unrelated Copadichromis form from the same island, keepers wanting a clean line should confirm both genus and Mbenji Island provenance with the dealer.
Conservation
Tropheops sp. "Mbenji Blue" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, has no Red List assessment of any kind. Its known range is restricted to a single offshore island, and forms this tightly localised are, in general, more exposed to concentrated ornamental collecting or localised habitat disturbance than wide-ranging species simply because their entire known population occupies a small area. No formal conservation status should be assumed for this form pending assessment.
