Tropheops sp. "Macrophthalmus Gallireya" has no formal scientific name, no describing author, and no Catalog of Fishes entry. The trade label borrows the specific epithet of the described species Tropheops macrophthalmus — Ahl, 1926, originally Pseudotropheus macrophthalmus, from the Greek for "large eye" — and appends the collection site, Gallireya Reef, to distinguish this population from the Chitimba Bay population carrying the same "macrophthalmus" tag and from the nominal T. macrophthalmus itself. All three are placed provisionally within the same large-eyed group on the strength of shared morphology, but the relationships between them, and between any of them and the formally described species, have not been resolved by a published study. It is treated here as an independent trade form pending taxonomic review.
Morphology
The body follows the standard Tropheops build: compact, laterally compressed, with a steep forehead and a blunt mouth set with comb-like outer teeth for scraping algae. The name identifies an enlarged eye relative to head size, the shared trait behind every "macrophthalmus"-tagged Tropheops trade form and the diagnostic feature of the described species whose epithet they borrow. Because Gallireya Reef is fished at depths reaching well into the intermediate zone rather than sitting entirely in the shallow littoral, a comparatively large eye is a plausible adaptation to the dimmer light lower on the reef. Detailed, independently published colour description for this specific population is not available; sexual dichromatism typical of the genus, with more saturated male colour, is expected but not confirmed in the sources consulted here.
Habitat
This form is documented from Gallireya Reef, an offshore reef feature on the far northern Malawian coast near Chilumba, at roughly 10.5°S. As a true offshore reef rather than a headland or shore-hugging formation, Gallireya has steeper underwater relief, more exposure to open-lake currents, and extends to greater depth before meeting the surrounding sand than a typical shoreline rocky outcrop — conditions that have produced several genus-specific colour forms among the cichlids collected there, from Aulonocara peacocks to Maylandia and Mylochromis. Rocky-reef habitat of this kind supports the aufwuchs Tropheops depend on, but productivity thins with depth, and populations established lower on the reef face correspondingly different light and feeding conditions than fish confined to the shallow crest. Water conditions otherwise follow the Lake Malawi standard: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline, with exceptional clarity typical of offshore structures away from shoreline sediment input.
Feeding
Tropheops are specialised epilithic algae grazers, using dense combs of outer teeth to strip the aufwuchs film — algae, diatoms, and the small invertebrates living within it — from sunlit rock. On an offshore reef like Gallireya, algal turf is likely most productive on the shallower crest, with growth thinning toward the reef's deeper margins; a population associated with the reef's lower reaches, consistent with the large-eye trait in its name, plausibly supplements grazing with a greater share of drifting plankton when algal cover is sparse, a pattern documented in other deep-collected Tropheops. No feeding study specific to this population has been published.
Mating
No dedicated behavioural study exists for this form. As in other Tropheops, dominant males are expected to hold small breeding territories on rock, displaying colour to attract females with no lasting pair bond. On an offshore reef with steeper relief and more open water around it than a typical shoreline site, territories may be more loosely spaced than in the crowded, continuous rock of the shallow littoral, though this has not been documented specifically for this population.
Breeding
Reproduction follows the standard Lake Malawi haplochromine pattern: maternal mouthbrooding, with the female taking fertilised eggs into her mouth after spawning and carrying them for roughly three to four weeks before releasing free-swimming fry. There is no paternal care beyond courtship and fertilisation. Clutch size has not been documented for this form; a modest clutch of a few dozen eggs is a reasonable expectation by analogy with similarly sized Tropheops.
In the aquarium
Tropheops sp. "Macrophthalmus Gallireya" appears in the hobby only sporadically, generally through specialist importers working the Chilumba collection area, and suits an established Tropheops keeper rather than a beginner. A rock-dominated tank on a fine sand base, with distinct piles broken up by clear sightlines, follows the genus's general requirements; a minimum footprint around 47 in is sensible for a harem group of one male to several females.
Water should replicate the lake: hard, alkaline, and stable, with pH roughly 7.7 to 8.6 and temperature in the mid-20s Celsius. Diet should lean vegetable, built around a spirulina-based staple, with protein-rich foods offered sparingly to avoid the bloat risk associated with high-protein diets in mbuna. Given the shared "macrophthalmus" tag across several undescribed and described Tropheops forms from the northern lake, keepers wanting to preserve a clean line should buy only from dealers who can confirm Gallireya Reef provenance rather than assuming any large-eyed Tropheops from the region is the same fish.
Conservation
Tropheops sp. "Macrophthalmus Gallireya" has not been evaluated by the IUCN and, as an undescribed form, carries no Red List assessment of any kind. Its known range is limited to a single offshore reef, which — if it proves to be a genuinely distinct population rather than part of a wider-ranging species — would make it vulnerable to localised pressures such as concentrated ornamental collecting or disturbance to the reef structure itself. No formal conservation status should be assumed pending further study.
