Taxonomy & naming
Tropheops sp. "Mauve" is an informal, undescribed taxon: it has no describing author, no publication date, and no entry in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes. The trade name follows the usual convention for undescribed Tropheops — genus, "sp." marking it unnamed, and a descriptive colour tag, here "Mauve" for the pale purplish-grey tone reported in breeding males. The genus Tropheops was carved out of the old "Pseudotropheus tropheops complex" and is recognised as an unusually speciose flock of largely undescribed, geographically distinct populations; this form's precise relationship to other named and unnamed Tropheops around the northern lake has not been formally studied. It should be treated strictly as a far-northern, informally recognised form pending taxonomic review.
Morphology
Tropheops sp. "Mauve" carries the genus's diagnostic body shape: a robust, laterally compressed mbuna body with the steep, sloping forehead and downturned, underslung mouth used to graze algae from rock surfaces at an angle. Its trade name identifies a pale, purplish-grey — mauve — ground colour as the defining trait of breeding males, a more muted colour scheme than the saturated blues and oranges seen in many other Tropheops forms; beyond this general tone, specific pattern details such as barring or fin markings have not been documented in detail for this population in the sources available to us. Size is not separately documented for this form and is presumed to fall within the genus-typical Tropheops range of roughly 3.5–4.5 in.
Habitat
This form is documented from the far northern end of Lake Malawi at Chirwa Island on the Malawian side and Ndumbi Point just across the border in Tanzania, with a further record at Chitande Island — a stretch of rocky coastline near the northernmost point of the lake, close to where the international border crosses the water. Like other Tropheops, it is expected to hold territory in shallow rocky habitat, grazing algae from exposed rock faces rather than ranging onto open sand. Water conditions here match Lake Malawi generally: warm, hard, and strongly alkaline.
Feeding
Tropheops are specialised algae grazers, distinguished by a steep, downturned mouth that lets them graze the algal mat (Aufwuchs) from rock surfaces at a pronounced angle, often tilting nearly vertical, head-down, against the rock. This feeding mode is essentially universal across the genus, and this population is expected to follow the same pattern, though no feeding study specific to it has been published. This steep, head-down grazing posture is thought to let Tropheops exploit algal turf on near-vertical rock faces that other, more horizontally-feeding mbuna cannot graze as efficiently, reducing direct dietary competition with co-occurring genera even where they share the same rocks. The Aufwuchs mat grazed in this way is a mixed community of filamentous algae, diatoms, and the small invertebrates living within it, and territorial males often defend a productive grazing patch with the same intensity as a spawning site.
Mating
Breeding in Tropheops is polygynous and territorial: males hold and defend rock territories and display to females, who visit rather than pair-bonding with a particular male. No behavioural account specific to this population has been published, so its mating system is inferred from the genus as a whole. Courtship follows the conventional haplochromine sequence: a territorial male performs a quivering lateral display to a visiting female and leads her toward his spawning site if she is receptive. As in other mbuna, the male's anal fin typically carries egg-spot markings that the female pecks at after laying her own eggs, drawing sperm into her mouth to fertilise the clutch she already holds. A dominant male may spawn with multiple females over the course of a day, and the arrangement is a lek-like system with no lasting pair bond.
Breeding
Tropheops sp. "Mauve" is presumed to be a maternal mouthbrooder, as are all Tropheops. Following spawning at a male's rocky territory, the female takes the fertilised eggs into her mouth and carries them through incubation, releasing free-swimming fry after several weeks with no further parental involvement from the male. Clutch size and brooding duration have not been documented specifically for this form. At Lake Malawi's stable warm temperatures the female typically broods for roughly three to four weeks, sheltering in rock crevices and largely fasting for most of that period before releasing free-swimming fry capable of independent feeding from the outset. There is no further parental care once the fry are released, and the fry immediately seek cover among rocks to avoid predation, including from adult cichlids of their own species. A healthy female can produce several broods a year under stable conditions.
In the aquarium
"Mauve" is a locality-specific Tropheops form appreciated by keepers who prefer its subtler, more muted colouring over the brighter blues and oranges of other Tropheops.
As with the genus generally, a tank furnished with dense rockwork and abundant broken sightlines suits its territorial, algae-grazing habits, and a reasonable ratio of females to each territorial male reduces harassment. A tank of at least 47 in is a sensible minimum. Water should match Lake Malawi conditions: warm, hard, and clearly alkaline, since prolonged exposure to soft or acidic water causes chronic problems in mbuna.
Diet should be predominantly vegetable-based — a quality spirulina-based flake or pellet, with occasional blanched vegetables — mirroring the algae-heavy diet this genus depends on in the wild; high-protein foods are poorly tolerated by grazing mbuna and increase the risk of bloat. Because its muted colouring is less immediately distinctive than that of brighter Tropheops forms, keepers wanting a guaranteed pure line should buy from a source that documents the Chirwa/Ndumbi Point collection point directly.
Conservation
Tropheops sp. "Mauve" has no IUCN Red List assessment, because it has never been formally described and has no valid scientific name available to be assessed. This reflects its taxonomic status, not a claim about its population health. As a rock-restricted mbuna from the far northern lake near the Malawi–Tanzania border, it faces the general pressures common to Lake Malawi's ornamental cichlids, but no dedicated population data exists to characterise its actual conservation status. Because Tropheops populations are typically confined to narrow, rock-specific stretches of shoreline and rarely cross open sand to mix with neighbouring populations, a locality-restricted form like this is inherently more exposed to local over-collection or habitat disturbance than a wide-ranging species would be, even though the wider genus is abundant across the lake as a whole.
